Common Questions About Learning Swahili

Is Swahili a difficult language to learn?

Plenty of variables are in play with this answer. To answer this question as you learn Swahili, it helps to ask additional questions. Which learning method are you using? With traditional rote grammar and textbooks, it will take a long time. With Pimsleur, you’ll be surprised how soon you’ll learn to speak Swahili. How much time are you willing to commit? With Pimsleur, you don’t have to totally disrupt your schedule, as many of our customers learn the Swahili language in their spare time – many in just 30 minutes per day!

How long does it take to learn Swahili?

Our Swahili lessons are structured to get you speaking basic words and phrases right away. Of course, if your curiosity and enthusiasm are high, and you’re able to dedicate a certain time for Swahili courses each day, you can realistically learn to speak Swahili (beginner level) in a few days. The great thing about Pimsleur is you can learn anywhere you are, any time you like, thanks to our go-anywhere app that includes everything you need to study Swahili.

What are the main challenges when learning the Swahili language?

Swahili has “noun classes” (also known to native speakers as “word classes”). Unlike English, Swahili assigns this “class category” to mostly nouns, so you’ll have to remember to speak a certain way when discussing everything – people, tools, places, natural objects, even fruits and vegetables. Swahili's phonetic system is relatively straightforward compared to some other languages, but these sounds aren’t directly relatable to English speakers. Swahili has many sounds not found in English. One example is nasal consonants, such as [ŋ] (as in "sing"), which appears in words such as "ngoma" (drum). Another one is the “sh” sound; Swahili uses the [ʃ] sound (as in "shoe"), which is also present in English, but the way it interacts with other sounds may vary.

While this might sound difficult, Pimsleur will guide you through the different guidelines and rules as you continue to learn Swahili and build confidence with each passing lesson. Swahili has other challenges as well, and our Swahili courses will help you overcome these obstacles.

How important is pronunciation in learning Swahili?

While Swahili, like English, has five vowels, the variation in pronunciation is much greater. This means you must nail down proper pronunciation as you learn the Swahili language – and Pimsleur’s Voice Coach with AI pronunciation feedback tool offers valuable insight and guidance. Even Swahili consonants have more complex linguistic characteristics than English, but our helpful tools and courses (Uninterrupted Learning, Speed Round Games, Lightbulb Moments, and more) ensure you’re learning quickly – but just as critically, learning to speak Swahili correctly, too!

Is the Swahili course suitable for complete beginners?

Absolutely. From your first 30-minute lesson, you'll begin speaking useful words and phrases through guided listening and conversation practice. Rather than focusing on grammar memorization, you'll learn through active participation. As you progress through the 30 lessons, you'll steadily build practical communication skills and gain confidence using Swahili in everyday situations and conversations.
