One challenge for novices trying to learn the Portuguese language is the heavy use of vowels, which occurs commonly in the Romance group of languages. With at least 14 different vowel phonemes (sounds), Portuguese contains one of the largest vowel collections of any global language. Verb inflection is often used to identify sentence subjects. Another potential obstacle to learn Portuguese is the absence or omission of subjects in sentences, a unique attribute of the language.
