De Tal Palo, Tal Astilla.<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Literal translation: <strong>From such a stick, such a splinter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The equivalent in English is \u201cThe apple doesn\u2019t fall far from the tree.\u201d Neither does the stick, I suppose. The word&nbsp;<em><b>astilla<\/b><\/em>&nbsp;can also be translated as &#8220;chip,&#8221; such as \u201cA chip of the old block,\u201d someone who resembles physically or in character their parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-perro-que-ladra-no-muerde\"><em><b>2. Perro Que Ladra No Muerde.<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Literal translation: <strong>A barking dog doesn\u2019t bite.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may recognize this popular idiom from the famous Netflix series Narcos. If you heard Escobar saying it to mock his adversaries, you probably have a good idea of what it means. \u201cAll talk and no action.\u201d If a dog is busy barking, he\u2019s not biting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-entre-broma-en-broma-la-verdad-se-asoma\"><em><b>3. Entre Broma En Broma, La Verdad Se Asoma.<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Literal translation: <strong>Between joke and joke, the truth peeks out.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In English, we say something along the lines of \u201cThere\u2019s a little bit of truth in every just kidding.\u201d It doesn\u2019t rhyme like the Spanish, so it&#8217;s not quite as catchy, but the point remains!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-del-dicho-al-hecho-hay-mucho-trecho\"><em><b>4. Del Dicho Al Hecho Hay Mucho Trecho.<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Literal translation:<strong> From spoken to done there is much stretch.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We would say, \u201cIt\u2019s easier said than done.\u201d In the same spirit, apply this idiom (but in Spanish, it rhymes, so again, Spanish 2, English 0!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-secretos-en-reunion-son-de-mala-educacion\"><em><b>5. Secretos En Reuni\u00f3n Son De Mala Educaci\u00f3n.<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Literal translation: <strong>Secrets in meetings are poor manners.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A.K.A. Don\u2019t be sly and deliberately disregard those around you by telling secrets in group settings. It is simply impolite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This saying is more of a grade school tattletale\u2019s retort when desiring to be included. Adults, however, sometimes use it jokingly. (But remember #3 &#8211; <em>E<\/em><i>ntre broma en broma la verdad se asoma<\/i>!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P.S. Rhyming goes 3-0!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-el-que-madruga-dios-le-ayuda\"><em><b>6. El Que Madruga Dios Le Ayuda.<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Literal translation: <strong>God helps the one who wakes up early.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, \u201cThe early bird gets the worm.\u201d God favors hard workers. Also rhymes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-mas-sabe-diablo-por-viejo-que-por-diablo\"><em><b>7. M\u00e1s Sabe Diablo Por Viejo Que Por Diablo<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Literal translation: <strong>The devil knows more because he is old than because he is the devil.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another religious reference, but this one is tricky. Essentially, the devil is not inherently knowledgeable because he is the devil but simply because he is old and has been around quite a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An older person or someone with ample experience would use this Spanish saying to a younger person to emphasize their credibility &#8211; or rather, \u201cTrust me, I know from experience,\u201d or \u201cI learned the hard way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-a-palabras-necias-oidos-sordos\"><em><b>8. A Palabras Necias, O\u00eddos Sordos.<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Literal translation: <strong>To foolish words, deaf ears.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s right, people! This proverb is so wise that it is clearly understood by all cultures. Don\u2019t listen to&nbsp;<em><b>chisme<\/b><\/em>&nbsp;(gossip) and people who want to bring you down. Keep your head up! A Mal Tiempo, Buena Cara.<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Literal translation: <strong>In hard times, good face.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This literally means \u201cKeep your head up.\u201d and \u201cKeep a good head on your shoulders.\u201d in hard times. Use this idiom to cheer someone up when they are going through a difficult situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-camaron-que-se-duerme-se-lo-lleva-la-corriente\"><em><b>10.
