What is considered Latin food?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">To answer these questions, let\u2019s do some investigative journalism in Miami where we interview local restaurants and try staple foods!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Read on to learn about Latino food culture, ingredients in Spanish and the most popular Hispanic food in Miami!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p3\" id=\"h-learn-spanish-by-discovering-latino-food-in-miami\"><strong>Learn Spanish by Discovering Latino Food in Miami<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">In this section, we will break down the different Latino foods in Miami by country, specialty, and ingredients, along with some can\u2019t-miss Spanish food vocabulary and Hispanic food facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p4\" id=\"h-peruvian-food\"><strong>Peruvian Food<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Restaurants<\/b>: <a href=\"https:\/\/divinoceviche.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Divino Ceviche<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceviche105.com\/site\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CVI.CHE<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>The Staples of Peruvian Food:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list ul1\">\n<li><strong><em>Quinoa<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 (originating in the Andes)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Papa dulce<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 (sweet potato)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Choclo<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 (the giant corn of Peru)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Pescado<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 (fish)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Yuca<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 (cassava)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Lomo<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 (loin)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Papas<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 (potatoes)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Cuy<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 (guinea pig)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Peruvian food is one of the most highly acclaimed cuisines of Latin America, up there with Mexican cuisine. The diet is influenced by Andean and Amazonian agriculture, stock full of starchy vegetables and grains, which is extremely wholesome. In fact, indigenous dwellers of these regions have the <span class=\"s1\">lowest recorded heart disease in the world<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">In Miami, there are large Peruvian communities and Peruvian food is growing in popularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-\"><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Here We Have Two Famous Dishes &#8211;&nbsp;<em><b>Ceviche and&nbsp;Causas<\/b><\/em> (and a Side of Fried Yuca)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><b>Ceviche <\/b><\/em>(cured fish) which is succulent white fish cured in lime juice, accompanied with some red onion, <em><b>choclo<\/b><\/em> (giant corn), <em><b>papa<\/b> <b>dulce<\/b><\/em> (sweet potato) and marinated in <em><b>leche<\/b> <b>de<\/b> <b>tigre<\/b><\/em> (tiger milk), is Peru\u2019s best-kept secret. It\u2019s often debated what\u2019s in it but normally lime juice, garlic, cilantro, <em><b>rocoto<\/b><\/em> (hot red pepper), red onion, and some kind of fish juice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><b>Causas<\/b><\/em> (causes), named after the \u201ccause\u201d for independence. When Jos\u00e9 de San Mart\u00edn, a <em>l<\/em><i>ibertador<\/i> of Peru, attempted to raise funds for Peru\u2019s independence, he encouraged people to sell foods prepared with whatever they could collect. Because most Peruvians had access to potatoes, vegetables, salt, pepper and lemons, the common dish became known as <em><b>la causa a la lime\u00f1a<\/b><\/em>, later shortened to <em><b>la<\/b> <b>causa<\/b><\/em> (the cause). Til this day, they are served cold but are now topped with <em><b>aguacate<\/b><\/em> (avocado), <em><b>pescado<\/b><\/em> (seafood) or <em><b>pollo <\/b><\/em>(chicken), sometimes even <em><b>pulpo<\/b><\/em> (octopus).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Swish it all down with some <em><b>chicha<\/b> <b>morada<\/b><\/em> (purple corn drink), an Andean beverage made with indigenous purple corn, pineapple peel, lime, cinnamon, and sugar. Oddly sweet and refreshing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-fun-peruvian-food-fact\"><b>Fun Peruvian Food Fact:<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">You know you are at a Peruvian joint in Miami when they are serving <b>Inca<\/b> <b>Kola<\/b> (a Peruvian lemon verbena soft drink that tastes like bubble gum) and starters consist of roasted corn nuts and fried sweet potato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p6\"><strong>Key Takeaway:<\/strong> Peruvian food not only tastes great but also makes you feel great!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">When you get tired of chowing down greasy fried food in Miami, opt for Peruvian. Not only are the indigenous grains and vegetables of their beloved <i>tierra<\/i> super-rich in fiber, but their significant Asian influence led to the development of lighter dishes, <b>leaving out fatty cheeses and fried foods and incorporating more raw fish and citrus<\/b>. For this reason, there are even several restaurants in Miami that combine Japanese + Peruvian food, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suviche.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SuViche<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cevishiro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cevishiro<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p4\" id=\"h-venezuelan-foods\"><strong>Venezuelan Foods<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Restaurants<\/b>: <a href=\"https:\/\/eatdoggis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doggi\u2019s Arepa Bar<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.budarebistro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Budare Bistro<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>The Staples of Venezuelan Food:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list ul1\">\n<li><strong><em>Arroz blanco<\/em><\/strong> (white rice)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Arepa<\/em><\/strong> (fried ground maize dough stuffed with different ingredients)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Queso<\/em><\/strong> (cheese)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Chicharr\u00f3n<\/em><\/strong> (fried pork belly\/fried pork rinds)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Empanadas<\/em><\/strong> (pastry turnover)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Aguacate<\/em><\/strong> (avocado)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Carn de rez <\/em><\/strong>(beef)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Pl\u00e1tanos<\/em><\/strong> (plantains)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Because of Venezuela\u2019s proximity to Colombia, much of the food is similar: meaty, juicy, doughy, and fried (<i>and containing tons of cheese<\/i>)!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-venezuelan-food-facts\"><strong>Venezuelan Food Facts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">At Doggi\u2019s Arepa Bar, Venezuelan waitresses will be happy to greet you and explain the difference between Colombian and Venezuelan <em>arepas<\/em>. The fried ground maize stays the same, but instead of mixing cheese in the <em><b>masa<\/b><\/em> (dough), they stuff them with just about anything you can think of, including classically shredded chicken and avocados.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">We see this theme also play out with Venezuelan <em><b>patacones<\/b><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p7\">Last time, we saw that Colombian <b>patacones <\/b>were made with crushed green plantains, fried, and finally salted. They are usually eaten by themselves, just like Colombian arepas. Venezuelans, on the other hand, take the <em><b>patacon<\/b><\/em> to the next level, building on layers of cheese, fresh veggies, chicken, meat, and more cheese! Always accompanied by the classic <em><b>guasacaca<\/b><\/em> (creamy avocado sauce).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-wait-did-i-mention-venezuelans-love-cheese\"><strong>Wait, Did I mention Venezuelans Love Cheese?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Can\u2019t forget <em><b>teque\u00f1os<\/b><\/em>. Out of respect, I won\u2019t call them Venezuelan mozzarella sticks, but they are fried breaded cheese sticks, usually with <em><b>queso<\/b> <b>blanco<\/b><\/em> (white cheese), a soft, mild cheese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p4\"><strong>Wherever there are Venezuelans, there\u2019s a party\u2026 and cheese!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">When you think Venezuelan food in Miami, it\u2019s always <em><b>arepas<\/b><\/em> and <em><b>teque\u00f1os<\/b><\/em> (even though there are plenty of other fabulous dishes and desserts). The best part about Venezuelan food is interacting with the lively locals, hearing their stories and participating in their passionate culture.
