The food scene is just as diverse as its people. We all know that seeking out authentic Cuban food is a must when visiting Miami, but what about other Latin American cuisine? How do they differ? What is considered Latino food? To answer these questions, I went on an investigative food tour of Miami to check out local restaurants and see what all the hype was about!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to learn about Latino food culture, ingredients in Spanish, and the Latin influence in Miami culture!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s break down the different Latino foods in Miami by country, specialty, and ingredients.&nbsp; We&#8217;ll also clue you into some can\u2019t-miss Spanish food vocabulary and Hispanic food facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-traditional-cuban-foods\"><b>Traditional Cuban Foods<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>Arroz blanco<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em> (white rice)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Arroz morado<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em> (black rice that takes on a purple hue when cooked)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Frijoles negros<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em> (black beans)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Yuca<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em> (cassava)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Bistec<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em> (thinly pounded steak)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Lech\u00f3n asado<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp; &nbsp;(roast pig)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Pl\u00e1tanos<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em> (plantains)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Ajo<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em> (garlic, and A LOT of it, slathered on everything\u2026)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-cuban-restaurants-in-miami\"><b>Best Cuban Restaurants in Miami<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-la-carreta\"><strong>La Carreta<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>3632 SW 8th St, Miami, FL 33135<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cuban food is king in Miami, so naturally, my first stop was <em><b>La<\/b> <b>Carreta<\/b><\/em> (The Wagon) on Calle 8 in Miami\u2019s own &#8220;Little Havana&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before even heading inside to dine, you can stop at <em><b>La Ventana<\/b><\/em> (The Window) outside, where locals and tourists stop by for a <em>cafecito<\/em> (little coffee) and a <em>pastelito<\/em> (a little Cuban pastry) or a <em>croqueta<\/em> (croquette).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those of you that have never had the mind-blowing pleasure of sipping on a Cuban coffee, it is akin to a high voltage electric shock to the senses of sugar and caffeine. Have one around 3:00 PM as the locals do for an afternoon pick-me-up. Take a bite of your <em>pastelito<\/em> (usually filled with guava and cheese) to top it off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside La Carreta is where the magic happens. This is Cuban food at its finest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the left, we see featured <em>lech\u00f3n asado <\/em>(roasted pulled porked) with <em>maduros<\/em> (fried ripe plantains) and<em> arroz morado <\/em>(black rice), accompanied by Cuban <em>mojo<\/em> sauce (pronounced <em>mo-ho<\/em>), which refers to any olive oil-based garlic sauce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the right, we see a typical Cuban sandwich, which originated in cafes that catered to exiled Cuban workers in the Florida Keys and Ybor City.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>A traditional&nbsp;Cuban sandwich has <em>lech\u00f3n asado, jam\u00f3n <\/em>(ham), Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard. Finally, a juicy slice of lime to top everything off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-el-palacio-de-los-jugos\"><b>El Palacio de Los Jugos<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>5721 W Flagler St<span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">, Miami, FL 33142 (Along with 9 other&nbsp;<\/span>locations across the city)<span style=\"color: #2199e8;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next stop: <b>El Palacio de Los Jugos <\/b>(The Juice Palace), rumored to be rapper Pitbull\u2019s hang-out spot at 2 AM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to having every tropical fruit you can imagine (and even the ones you can\u2019t), there is hot, ready-made Cuban food for pickup. I grabbed myself a <em>jugo de guan\u00e1bana <\/em>(soursop fruit) from the Cuban lady at the register and proceeded to drool over the food behind the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-traditional-cuban-dishes\"><strong>Traditional Cuban Dishes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em><b>Pargo Frito<\/b><\/em> (Fried snapper, a Miami delicacy)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><b>Filete Frito<\/b><\/em> (Fried chicken cutlet)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><b>Bistec de Palomilla<\/b><\/em> (Steak marinated in garlic and lime)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><b>Ri\u00f1onada <\/b><\/em>(Beef Loin)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><b>Churrasco<\/b><\/em> (Barbecued steak)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><b>Bistec de Cerdo<\/b><\/em> (Pork cutlet)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><b>Bistec de Pollo<\/b><\/em> (Chicken cutlet)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To recap, Cuban foods are garlicky, oily, delicious, not-very-vegetarian friendly masterpieces and an absolute cornerstone of Miami cuisine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-colombian-food-in-miami\"><strong>Colombian Food in Miami<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Colombians are known for their salsa, both on the dance floor AND in the kitchen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colombian food is similar to Cuban food in that it incorporates a lot of meat and plantains, but there is a higher value put on fried foods like <em>empanadas<\/em> and <em>arepas<\/em>. Black beans aren\u2019t so common and are often replaced by lentils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-colombian-food-nbsp-staples\"><b>Colombian Food&nbsp;<\/b><b>Staples<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Arroz Blanco<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp; (white rice)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Arepa<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp; (fried ground maize dough with cheese)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Chicharr\u00f3n<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp; (fried pork belly\/fried pork rinds)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Empanadas&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong> (pastry turnover)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Carne de Res&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong> (beef)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Pl\u00e1tanos&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong> (plantains)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-colombian-restaurant-in-miami\"><b>Best Colombian Restaurant in Miami<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-patacon-pisa-o\"><b>Patac\u00f3n<\/b> <strong>Pisa\u2019o<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>13630 SW 120th St Miami, FL<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I went down to <b>Patac\u00f3n<\/b> <strong>Pisa\u2019o<\/strong><b>&nbsp;<\/b>to see what the hype was about. <b> <\/b>Here, we see Colombian <em>patacones<\/em>, which are smashed green plantains (as opposed to the ripe plantains featured above) and deep fried in salt and slathered in <em>hogao<\/em> (tomato and onion sauce, from <em>hogado<\/em> meaning, drowned). Cubans also eat <em>patacones<\/em> under the alias <em>tostones <\/em>(Colombians claim that <em>patacones<\/em> are bigger).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also had a <em>jugo de lulo<\/em> (lulo juice \u2013 also known as &#8220;naranjilla&#8221;, similar in taste to gooseberry) and a Colombian <em>empanada<\/em>, deep-fried and stuffed with meat and potatoes, as opposed to the famous Argentinean <em>empanadas<\/em> which are oven-baked and filled with meat, olives, and egg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, a <em>Bandeja Paisa,<b>&nbsp;<\/b><\/em>the national pride of Colombia.&nbsp;<em>Bandeja Paisa<\/em> translates to &#8220;Paisa Platter,&#8221; named for Paisa, a region in the Columbian Andes. This is a mouthful and will test your Spanish!&nbsp;<em>Bandeja Paisa<\/em> is complete with <em>arepa<\/em>, avocado, <em>carne de res<\/em>, <em>maduros, <\/em><span class=\"s1\"><em>chicharr\u00f3n, arroz blanco <\/em>and a fried egg to top it off. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colombians are known internationally for their salsa music, but what foreigners don\u2019t know is that their food is just as delicious, and served with spice, too!
