If you\u2019re a native English speaker and trying to learn a new language, learning about English phonemes is an ideal way \u2013 and a somewhat unconventional method \u2013 to help you acquire most other languages. Phonemes, or sounds, help establish a baseline understanding of how words are formed and assist with pronunciation and other aspects of learning a new language. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s more, phonemes in English help new learners appreciate the wide diversity among the languages of the world. Using WALS, the World Atlas of Language Structures<\/a> online, as well as this<\/a> interactive chart of consonants and vowels, let\u2019s explore some of the unusual and not-so-unusual sounds of English.WALS is a large database about the properties of languages. Published and maintained by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology<\/a>, it compares the important grammatical properties of languages and allows users to explore those properties in interactive maps. Properties examined include sentence word order<\/a>, the presence or absence of particular words<\/a>, how words are put together<\/a>, and the language\u2019s sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Are Phonemes and Why Do They Matter?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In English, the words \u2018bat\u2019 and \u2018pat\u2019 mean different things and are only differentiated by \/b\/ and \/p\/, indicating that these sounds are separate phonemes. The system of speech sounds is called phonology<\/em>. Just like any other language, English has basic sounds that help differentiate words \u2013 even similar words. These English sounds are called phonemes; they\u2019re the smallest units in phonology and can even account for different accents in the same language<\/a>.

Think of these small but mighty sounds in English as essential building blocks of the language. And, as you might expect, English isn\u2019t alone \u2013 every language has its own set of basic phonemes. While some languages (like English) have a relatively basic, straightforward collection of phonemes, other languages have a much more complex phonology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A language with very different phonemes than our native language can be challenging to learn. The US State Department describes Mandarin<\/a> and Cantonese<\/a> as exceptionally difficult<\/a> for native English speakers to learn, whereas Spanish<\/a> and Norwegian<\/a> are easier for native English speakers. One difficulty that English speakers learning Mandarin face is the many phonological differences<\/a> between the two languages.Based on your native language\u2019s phonemes, the small sounds can impact how quickly you\u2019re able to pick up another tongue\u2019s phonology. Let\u2019s take a look at the phonemes of the English language and how their unique character stacks up with other global languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Role of Phonemes in English Pronunciation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are 44 total phonemes in English: 19 vowel sounds and 25 consonant sounds. As global languages go, the total number of English sounds is slightly above average, around the same number as other well-known languages. 44 may sound like a lot, but consider the Ubykh language, spoken in the Caucasus region in southern Russia \u2013 it has around 90 phonemes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conversely, the Austronesian languages of the South Pacific have a low phoneme count \u2013 some of the tongues in this language group only have 12-13!
English sounds are thus considered a good baseline for learning other languages. So, if you\u2019re a native English speaker curious about other languages, you\u2019re already off to a great start!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

English Vowel Sounds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Vowels<\/strong>: English has a large number of vowels<\/a> compared to other languages, \u2018large\u2019 defined by WALS is more than seven vowels. An \u2018average\u2019 number of vowels is five or six. Although we only have five written vowels (a, e, i, o, u), English has 14-21 different vowel sounds<\/a>, depending on the dialect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although English has a lot of vowel sounds, most of the vowels themselves aren\u2019t particularly unusual. It doesn\u2019t have any front rounded vowels<\/a>, which are fairly uncommon in the world\u2019s languages. Front vowels are said with the tongue near the front of the mouth, and rounded vowels have rounding of the lips when pronounced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

English Consonant Sounds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Consonants<\/strong>: English has an average-sized consonant inventory<\/a> (about 22 consonants). The Rotokas<\/a> language of Papua New Guinea has only six consonants, which is the smallest number of any language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

English has two consonants that are unusual among languages.  These are the \u2018th\u2019 sounds<\/a>, as in \u2018thunder\u2019 or \u2018think.\u2019 Of the world\u2019s languages, only 8% have \u2018th\u2019 sounds.  Historically, \u2018th\u2019 sounds often come from \u2019t\u2019 or \u2018d\u2019 sounds. This happened independently<\/a> in English, Spanish, and Tashelhiyt<\/a> (Berber; Morocco).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another slightly unusual sound found in English is \/\u014b\/, often written as \u2018ng\u2019 and found in words like \u2018wing\u2019 or \u2018singing.\u2019 This sound<\/a> is called \u2018engma.\u2019 About half of languages have this phoneme. Many languages allow this \u2018ng\u2019 sound at the beginning of a word, but you\u2019ll never find it there in English.WALS lists more phonemic features, like tone<\/a>, vowel nasalization<\/a>, and different<\/a>types<\/a> of consonants<\/a>, that can be explored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comparing English Sounds to Other Languages<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

English doesn\u2019t have front-rounded vowels. These vowels are pronounced by placing the tongue as far forward as possible and rounding the lips. French<\/a> and German<\/a> have the vowels \/y\/, \/\u00f8\/, and \/\u0153\/. These sounds are unknown in English phonemes, making some vowel sounds in those languages hard for English speakers to acquire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comparing the sounds of English to other languages can help us understand and appreciate some of the oddities of our language, like its large number of vowels or uncommon \u2018th\u2019 sounds. In doing so we can also learn more about what sounds are common or unusual in languages spoken around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
