That&#8217;s an average of $161.96 per person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p4\">Candy is the most popular Valentine&#8217;s Day gift<span class=\"s1\">. <\/span>52 percent of consumers <span class=\"s1\">are <\/span>expected to <span class=\"s1\">buy some sort of candy this holiday, spending<\/span> $1.8 billion<span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p4\">Rounding out the list of most popular gifts are&nbsp;greeting cards (44%); flowers (35%); an evening out (34%); jewelry (18%); clothing (18%); and gift cards (15%). While nearly half of people polled said they&#8217;d prefer to <span class=\"s1\">receive<\/span> an &#8220;experience gift&#8221;, such as tickets to an event or a spa-day, only a quarter of respondents plan to give one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p12\" id=\"h-why-we-use-xoxo-to-represent-hugs-and-kisses\"><b>Why We Use \u201cXOXO\u201d to Represent Hugs and Kisses<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p4\">Signing or embossing letters and documents with an \u201cX&#8221; dates back to the Middle Ages when the majority of people could not read or write.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>The X represent<span class=\"s1\">s<\/span> the word for Christ or cross. This <span class=\"s1\">symbol derives<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> from the first letter (Chi) in the Greek word for Christ, \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p4\">After signing an X you would then &#8220;seal it with a kiss&#8221; signif<span class=\"s1\">y<\/span>i<span class=\"s1\">ng<\/span> you<span class=\"s1\">r<\/span> oath under God that what is contained in the letter is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p4\">The origin of using an &#8220;O&#8221; to represent a hug is less clear.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>However, the pairing of X&#8217;s and O&#8217;s is traditional and goes as far back as the Romans who played an ancient form of the game of Tic, Tac, Toe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p12\" id=\"h-the-longest-marriage-on-record\"><b>The Longest Marriage on Record<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p4\">Karam and Katari Chand, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, <span class=\"s1\">England <\/span>had an arranged marriage <span class=\"s1\">that<\/span> lasted 90 years and 291 days<span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p14\"><span class=\"s10\">The couple, <\/span>married in India on December 11, 1925, when the country was <span class=\"s1\">still <\/span>under British rule, <span class=\"s10\">celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p15\">Their goal was to reach a century of marriage, but sadly Mr. Chand passed away in October 2016, at age 110. A translation error in their advertisement, however, led to the one-sided custom of women giving gifts of chocolate to the men in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p4\">Japanese women are expected to give inexpensive <em>gi<\/em><em>ri-choco<\/em>, literally \u201cobligatory chocolate\u201d, as a way of thanking their male friends, co-workers and even bosses for favors and kindnesses shown throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p19\"><em>Honmei-choco<\/em>, or &#8220;favorite chocolate&#8221;, is reserved for that special someone and is typically either expensive or homemade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p19\">Men get their turn to reciprocate exactly one month later when, on March 14, they celebrate White Day.
