I very much drank the \u201cbujo\u201d kool-aid. I\u2019ll probably be featured in a bullet journal cult recovery documentary three years from now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All kidding aside, I really find it satisfying.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only does it help organize my day-to-day, but it has also become a kind of attractive log of my life. And I find the practice of taking time out to create my \u201cspreads\u201d and physically write everything down can be almost like a kind of meditation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the other benefits I didn\u2019t consider is that a bullet journal could be a really effective way to plan and keep track of your language learning. Over the past few months, I\u2019ve spent more hours than I would like to admit in various YouTube holes watching polyglots planning their language learning with bullet journals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That gave me a ton of ideas of how I could apply the bujo method to language learning, and I want to share some of what I\u2019ve gleaned with you here.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So consider this to be your complete guide on using a bullet journal to learn a language.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bullet-journals-make-organizing-your-life-a-snap\"><strong>Bullet Journals Make Organizing Your Life a Snap<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For the complete beginner (i.e. me five months ago) a bullet journal is kind of a mix between an agenda, a journal, and a sketchbook. As Ryder Caroll, the originator of the bullet journal method says, it lets you \u201ctrack the past, organize the present, and plan for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re someone that likes to plan their life, you may be familiar with the difficulty of finding <em>the perfect <\/em>agenda. <em>This<\/em> one has great motivational quotes, but the calendar doesn\u2019t quite work. You like that <em>that<\/em> one has space for your daily tasks and appointments, but you wish there was more space to write notes. <em>That other one<\/em> has a great way to keep track of your budget, but there\u2019s no place to put your grades on your university assignments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bullet journal provides an answer to all that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s blank except for little dots. The idea is that you can customize it so that it\u2019s exactly what works for you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-your-bullet-journal-basics\"><strong>Your Bullet Journal Basics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bullet journals typically have at least four pieces:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>An index.<\/strong> This goes at the beginning of your journal. It pairs your later spreads with a page number so it\u2019s easy to find what you\u2019re looking for later. I actually don\u2019t use this, but most people do.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A future log.<\/strong> This helps you keep track of things you need to do in the future\u2014in the next six months to a year.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A monthly calendar.<\/strong> This helps you know what\u2019s coming up in the next month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A daily task list. <\/strong>This is where you put all the stuff you need to do for the day.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also add a number of other additional spreads for things that matter to you: your vision for the year, a place to write a journal, a place to keep track of your expenses, etc. You can make it what you want.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This video helps explain bullet journaling basics really well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clear clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"flex-video widescreen youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to Bullet Journal\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fm15cmYU0IM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-ways-use-your-bullet-journal-for-language-learning\"><strong>Best Ways Use Your Bullet Journal for Language Learning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve got your bullet journal set up for your life, you can start to think about how it can be a useful tool to keep track of your language learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some ideas for how you can use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-keep-track-of-your-language-goals-nbsp\"><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>Keep track of your language goals&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating language goals is one of the most important parts of learning a language. They help you know what you want to accomplish so that you can stay focused and motivated to do the hard work of staying consistent with your learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your bujo is the perfect place to keep track of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/new-year-new-language-the-new-years-resolution-talk\/\">language goals<\/a> or your New Year\u2019s language resolutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-use-it-to-build-your-language-learning-program\"><strong>2. Use It to Build Your Language Learning Program<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/better-humans\/how-you-can-become-fluent-in-a-language-in-just-one-year-71ab80c5307c\">become fluent in a language<\/a>, it helps to have a solid curriculum. That means having a program of what you\u2019re going to learn first, what materials you will use, and so on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pimsleur can really help with that because the app takes a lot of the guesswork out of designing an effective language-learning program. Use it to Measure and Track Your Progress<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>More than simply tracking <em>when <\/em>you\u2019re studying your language or <em>how often<\/em>, you can also use it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leonardoenglish.com\/blog\/how-to-measure-your-progress-in-english\">measure your language progress<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindie Botes has a system for doing that that I really like. She fills in bars based on her self-assessed progress and where she\u2019d like to be by the end of the year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clear clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"flex-video widescreen youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Plan with me: Language Goals &amp; 2018 Bujo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gZrNKpAASWg?start=18&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You could also keep track of your score on language tests or your self-rated level on the CEFR scale. However you do it, having a visual way to see how your language is improving can be really motivating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-keep-track-of-language-resources\"><strong>5. Keep Track of Language Resources<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leonardoenglish.com\/blog\/reading-in-english\">reading is important for learning a language<\/a>\u2014why not keep a list of books you want to read in your bullet journal? Or use your bullet journal to keep track of the Netflix shows you\u2019d like to watch in the language you\u2019re learning. (We\u2019ve got some ideas there if you\u2019re learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/netflix-learn-french\/\">French<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/brazilian-netflix-portuguese\/\">Portuguese<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/learn-spanish-with-netflix\">Spanish<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/learn-japanese-with-terrace-house\/\">Japanese<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could even list the podcasts you like, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/learn-a-language-playing-video-games\/\">video games<\/a> you want to try out, or music you want to add to your playlist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-plan-your-next-travel-destination\"><strong>6. Plan Your Next Travel Destination<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully, it won\u2019t be too long before we can easily travel again\u2014and your bujo is the perfect place to start your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/the-best-apps-for-travel-and-vacation-planning\/\">travel planning<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use it to keep a travel bucket list or to brainstorm for your next adventure. And while you\u2019re away, use it as a scrapbook to make notes of your cherished memories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-keep-a-list-of-recipes-to-try\"><strong>7. Keep a List of Recipes to Try<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/language-learning-through-cooking-and-food\/\">Cooking is a fantastic way<\/a> to sharpen your language skills. Make notes of the new words and phrases you\u2019re learning, and their definitions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-bullet-journal-spreads-for-language-learning\"><strong>5 Bullet Journal Spreads for Language Learning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bullet journals are powerful because they\u2019re flexible: they can accommodate a ton of different styles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that can feel a bit intimidating, too. <em>Where should you start?&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are five journal spreads for language learning that I\u2019ve found useful to inspire you. It even gives you a spot to keep track of the grammar you still need to learn.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-minimal-language-study-tracker\"><strong>4. Minimal language study tracker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This simple monthly tracker brings some minimalism to your language study program. You just keep track of any language study you did that day. At the end of the month, you can self-assess your fluency as a percent of 100.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over several months, you\u2019ll be able to see your progress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-visual-vocabulary-doodle-page\"><strong>5.
