It brings us together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an increasingly globalized and connected world, learning a new language helps us to understand nuances of other cultures, makes us more empathetic to others, and allows us to build productive personal and professional relationships with people from all over the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/\">speaking a foreign language<\/a> broadens the global conversation and makes us better cultural interpreters. Understanding them\u2014and rejecting them\u2014may help you recommit and stay motivated to learn a language.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-myths-you-might-believe-about-language-learning\"><strong>8 Myths You Might Believe About Language Learning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-myth-1-learning-a-language-requires-a-special-talent-and-i-don-t-have-it\"><strong>Myth 1: Learning a Language Requires a Special Talent, and I Don\u2019t Have It<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the most widespread myths about language learning: that you must<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leonardoenglish.com\/blog\/you-dont-have-to-be-smart-to-learn-english\"> be gifted in languages to do it<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an English teacher, I\u2019ve seen people give up studying a new language when it feels difficult. It seems to come with a ready-made justification: learning a new language requires a special talent. This myth seems to stem from school when some people got an easy \u201cA\u201d in French; for others, it felt impossible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If learning a new language was only for the linguistically gifted and talented, how is it that roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/education\/half-the-world-is-bilingual-whats-our-problem\/2019\/04\/24\/1c2b0cc2-6625-11e9-a1b6-b29b90efa879_story.html\">half the people on the planet are bilingual<\/a>? Or why do <em>most<\/em> people speak two languages in certain regions, like Quebec in Canada or Catalonia in Spain? Is it because Quebecers and Catalonians are smarter than everyone else?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No, obviously not.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people find it easier to learn a language because they were exposed to it earlier or their school system supports language learning. But anyone <em>can<\/em> learn a language.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What do you <em>really <\/em>need if not a gift for language learning? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-everything-you-need-to-learn-a-language\"><strong>Everything You Need To Learn a Language:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Great study tools.<\/strong> Pimsleur is one based on the science of language learning. There are others. But study aids are a must.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Focus.<\/strong> You need to study consistently over a long time. It takes work to learn a language.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The right attitude.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/media.neliti.com\/media\/publications\/193638-EN-the-role-of-attitude-to-language-learnin.pdf\">Research has actually<\/a> found that the more positive your attitude towards learning a language, the more you\u2019ll learn.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Time.<\/strong> Language learning takes a long time. It just does. The real reason people don\u2019t learn a language is because they stop after a few weeks. Keep with it for months and years and you\u2019ll get there.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What separates you from the people who speak 20 different languages is not <em>intelligence. <\/em>They have just found study methods that work for them, stayed focused, enjoyed the process, and spent a lot of time doing it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do those things, the sky&#8217;s the limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-myth-2-i-m-too-old-to-learn\"><strong>Myth 2: I\u2019m Too Old to Learn<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtually anyone can become fluent in any language at any age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s true that language learning is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0010027718300994\"><em>easier<\/em> when we\u2019re children<\/a>. Children\u2019s brains are still being developed, and they\u2019re especially well set up to acquire language. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0010027718300994\">It\u2019s harder to learn as adults than it is as kids<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s just as easy to learn at 60 as at 25. More importantly, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@chacon\/mit-scientists-prove-adults-learn-language-to-fluency-nearly-as-well-as-children-1de888d1d45f\">even late learners can become fluent in a language<\/a>. A brilliant command of another language&#8217;s vocabulary can be achieved at any age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research supports this. <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=_-L6j8jR-jAC&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PA229&amp;dq=easier+to+learn+langauge+with+age&amp;ots=JX9g2N9WMP&amp;sig=FUpRND1B9Q75AOJBq7OE5shq5H0\">Some research suggests<\/a> that, while older learners do not <em>remember <\/em>the meaning of foreign language words as well as younger learners, older learners make up for this by being more sensitive to grammar and meaning. They are better at analyzing language and deconstructing it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, older learners tend to use different strategies but can be just as successful in learning a language.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0010027718300994\">Some researchers even say<\/a> that \u201c<strong><em>Studies that compare children and adults exposed to comparable material in the lab or during the initial months of an immersion program show that adults perform better, not worse than children<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children and adults learn <em>differently, <\/em>yes. But adults, and even older adults, are absolutely still able to learn a language. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-myth-3-i-have-to-master-all-the-grammar-rules-to-reach-fluency-nbsp\"><strong>Myth 3: I Have to Master All the Grammar Rules to Reach Fluency&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes we equate speaking fluently with understanding grammar perfectly. But nothing could be further from the truth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you were five years old and were already perfectly able to communicate in your native language, did you already master the grammar rules? Probably not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grammar is, of course, important for languages. It\u2019s like traffic lights on the road: grammar helps predictably organize language so we understand what people say. <strong>You <em>do <\/em>need to understand it.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But <em><strong>memorizing grammar rules<\/strong><\/em> is not how you become fluent in a language. It\u2019s not like philosophy or psychology, where we learn <em>about <\/em>it. We learn a language mainly by <em>using <\/em>it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learning grammar rules should not be your priority when studying a new language, which is why Pimsleur focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/the-pimsleur-method\/\">teaching language in context<\/a>. <\/strong>The trick to speaking a language fluently <em>is speaking it. <\/em>Grammar is important, especially at the lower levels, but you don\u2019t need to memorize all the rules and exceptions to speak fluently.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-myth-4-i-will-only-get-language-immersion-if-i-travel-abroad\"><strong>Myth 4: I Will Only Get Language Immersion if I Travel Abroad<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people think they need to spend a lot of money on trips or exchange programs to have a real cultural immersion that will teach them to speak like a native.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/myprojects\/mit-challenge-2\/\">As Scott Young demonstrated<\/a> when he challenged himself to learn the whole MIT curriculum for computer science without attending a single class, you don\u2019t need to go to Brazil to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/learn-portuguese-brazilian\/\">learn Portuguese<\/a> or spend two years in Paris to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/learn-french\/\">speak French<\/a> like a Parisian.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To have a real language immersion you <em>do <\/em>need to surround yourself with your target language. But that doesn\u2019t mean you have to leave your house.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-can-you-build-a-language-immersion-program\"><strong>How can you build a language immersion program?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>By doing things you normally do in your native language but adjust to the language you want to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can listen to podcasts at the gym as you normally do\u2014but in your target language. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Try cooking in your target language. For example, if you&#8217;re studying French, you can choose a French recipe (try French Onion Soup) and make your shopping list for the supermarket in that language.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When choosing a book at the bookstore, look for a French title. The same thing when watching a movie: look for subtitles in the tongue you&#8217;re studying and pay attention to the new vocabulary. You can even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/learn-a-language-playing-video-games\/\">use video games to learn a language<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Also, if you want to practice chatting with natives, numerous applications are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/online-language-practice-partner\/\"> available<\/a> to chat with people from all over the world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of these small actions will help you create immersive environments for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-myth-5-once-i-can-speak-a-language-i-no-longer-have-to-study\"><strong>Myth 5: Once I Can Speak a Language, I No Longer Have to Study<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason you never forget how to communicate in your native language is simple: you are practicing all the time. You talk to people, read news and documents, listen to music, and watch movies in your native language\u2014and most of these things are repeated daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even then, we are constantly learning new words. (I just recently learned what \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/browse\/anosmia?s=t\">anosmia<\/a>\u201d meant)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why do we believe that when we learn a new language, we no longer need to study or practice it, as if it were magically stored in our brains?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For lasting results, you need to keep things fresh by practicing whenever possible, studying, and consuming material (music, books, films, videos) in the language you have learned. Otherwise, little by little, you\u2019ll find that you get rusty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To maintain your language, build it into your day. Form a plan, allocating a certain number of hours each week, and you\u2019ll keep yourself fluent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-myth-6-i-have-to-speak-perfectly-or-not-speak-at-all\"><strong>Myth 6: I Have to Speak Perfectly or Not Speak at All<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a secret method among polyglots about how to quickly gain the confidence to speak a new language. It\u2019s this: <strong>speaking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We commonly think that we need to be fluent before trying to have a conversation. We know we\u2019ll likely make mistakes, and we don\u2019t want to make a fool of ourselves. We feel uncomfortable not really being able to express ourselves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But guess what? You&#8217;ll only gain fluency by making a ton of mistakes. <strong>Mistakes are a necessary part of learning.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So get used to the discomfort. Be aware that there will be a long time when you won&#8217;t know every word and may have to pull out Google Translate or be satisfied with a bunch of pauses in your sentences. That&#8217;s normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that most people are friendly, and they won\u2019t mind if you make mistakes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking in a new language is like dancing or playing the guitar: to improve, you must practice. Even if that means you first hit a bunch of the wrong notes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-myth-7-learning-a-language-is-too-expensive\"><strong>Myth 7: Learning a Language is Too Expensive<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re reading this article, you probably have a laptop or smartphone with internet access. Some great resources are the millions of YouTube videos, online learning forums, and ebooks, among many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-myth-8-translation-tools-are-good-enough-to-help-me-get-by\"><strong>Myth 8: Translation Tools Are Good Enough to Help Me Get By<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Translation software is getting better and better, so some people are starting to wonder if it&#8217;s even worth learning a language at all at this point.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An online translation engine can be helpful if you are in a city whose language you don&#8217;t know or when you need to quickly translate some text. However, we\u2019re not at the point where you can use it to have genuine communication with people. You still need to learn languages to <em>really<\/em> connect.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning a language also brings many other benefits that Google Translate doesn\u2019t. Language is not for the specially talented, it\u2019s not about being rich and traveling the world, and it\u2019s not about obsessively learning grammar rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Language is about connecting you to other people and other cultures. And while it\u2019s not easy, it\u2019s very rewarding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make a plan and start learning today.
