Language learners too often overlook how useful body language can be in assessing the context of a conversation. If you\u2019re in the dark on common gestures, you might be missing out on half the conversation (55%, to be exact).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 Most Common French Gestures and Their Meanings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Check out these common French gestures that are both useful and downright hilarious, so you can be in the know next time you practice your French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Mon Oeil<\/em> \u2013 I Don\u2019t Trust You<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This gesture is done by pulling down on your eye with your index finger and giving a pointed, serious expression. When you do this, you\u2019re saying, \u201cYou\u2019re so full of it!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Fun fact<\/strong>: Mon oeil<\/em> means my eye<\/em> \u2013 hence the eye-pointing!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An alternative to this is filling a cheek with air and expelling it with your finger. Just like mon oeil, it tells someone you think they\u2019re lying or exaggerating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. C\u2019est Rasoir<\/em> \u2013 It\u2019s Boring, or I\u2019m Bored<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Expressing that you are bored is done by running the backside of your knuckles up and down your jawline multiple times. This subtle motion can grab your friend’s attention and get you out of a situation you\u2019d rather get away from. C\u2019est rasoir <\/em><\/strong>literally meaning it\u2019s razor<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While we can often tell through body language when someone is disengaged, this gesture is used to directly and deliberately communicate this message to a companion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Et Toc \/ Dans Les Dents<\/em> \u2013 Take That \/ Told You So<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This gesture is performed by putting your thumb under your chin and then arcing it outward. It can mean take that<\/em>, told you so<\/em>, or that\u2019s payback<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a taunting type of motion and can be used confrontationally or jokingly toward friends or family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans les dents<\/em> is a variation of et toc<\/em> and is expressed similarly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Avoir Un Coup Dans Le Nez<\/em> \u2013 To Be Drunk<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Making a fist against your nose (almost as if you have a clown nose) and twisting it is used to point out that someone is completely drunk. You might jokingly use this silly gesture to describe a friend or passerby while out on a weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. J\u2019ai Peur<\/em> \u2013 I\u2019m Afraid  <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Take one hand and touch your thumb repeatedly to the rest of your extended fingers, almost in Italian style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Americans might think, \u201cShow me the money!\u201d, which is very culturally American. In France, however, it means I\u2019m afraid<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I once spoke to a French girl about traveling to Brazil, and I said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u2019es press\u00e9e d\u2019y aller?<\/em> <\/strong>\u2192 Are you excited about going?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon which she responded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oui, mais…<\/strong><\/em> \u2192  Yes, but\u2026 <\/em>with this gesture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I said, \u201cOh, expensive!\u201d and she responded, \u201cNo, afraid!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Needless to say, it\u2019s easy to misread conversations without gestural savoir-faire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Ras Le Bol<\/em> \u2013 To Be Fed Up With<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This expression is made by holding a slack expression on your face and holding your hand above your head. You\u2019ll move your hand back and forth horizontally to the side of your head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a bit like the English saying, \u2018I\u2019ve had it up to here.\u201d (By the way \u2013 there are many ways to say this in French).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. On Se Casse<\/em> \u2013 Let\u2019s Get Out of Here<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Smack the side of your hand against the palm of the other. Do it with a bit of force and a telling look in the eyes of \u201cI\u2019m over this\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a subtle way to escape a party or social situation you don\u2019t want to be in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\u00a0French slang<\/a>, you can say\u00a0on se casse<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0on se bouge<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to say\u00a0“let\u2019s bounce\/let\u2019s move”.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
