What is Your Word for Grandmother?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In honor of my grandmother, who passed away at the amazing age of 100, I wanted to share some of the words for grandmother in various languages from around the world. Some will be familiar and some strange.\u00a0 Some are quite formal, and some sound as sweet and warm as a nicely baked cookie.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Origins of the Word Grandmother in English<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Old English, the word was ealdemodor<\/strong><\/em>, which sounds a lot like \u201cold mother,\u201d and likely has roots in Old Norse. It was replaced by grandame<\/strong><\/em>, literally meaning \u201cold lady,\u201d due to the French influence over English. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The French word for grandmother is grandm\u00e8re<\/strong> <\/em>but often the nickname m\u00e9m\u00e9<\/strong> <\/em>is used.  In English, the most common nicknames for grandmother are grandma<\/strong>, gramma<\/strong>, gran<\/strong>, nan<\/strong>, and nana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Celtic languages, for example, Gaelic, it\u2019s maim\u00e9o<\/strong><\/em>. In the Manx language, your grandparents are your shennayryn<\/strong><\/em>, and your grandmother is your grannee<\/strong><\/em>, or mwarree<\/em>, or your shenn<\/strong> voir<\/strong><\/em>. In the south of Wales, you would use mam-gu<\/strong><\/em>, but in northern Wales, you\u2019d use nain<\/strong><\/em>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scandinavian Words for Grandmother<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the Norse languages, the word for grandmother changes depending on whether the person is your maternal or paternal grandmother.  In Swedish, mormor<\/strong><\/em> means, \u201cmother\u2019s mother,\u201d and farmor<\/strong><\/em> means, \u201cfather\u2019s mother.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the same in Danish, but they have another word for just \u201cgrandmother,\u201d which is bedstemor<\/strong><\/em>.  Norwegian also uses mormor<\/strong><\/em> and farmor<\/strong><\/em>, though sometimes bestemor<\/strong><\/em>, and sometimes forelder<\/strong><\/em> or forelderen<\/strong><\/em> for just \u201cgrandparent,\u201d or besteforeldere<\/strong><\/em> for \u201cgrandparents.\u201d  In Icelandic, the word is simply amma<\/strong><\/em>, and often the person\u2019s first name is added to the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Finnish, the word is iso\u00e4iti<\/strong><\/em>, a combination of the words iso<\/em> meaning \u201cgreat\u201d or \u201cbig\u201d and \u00e2iti<\/em>, meaning \u201cmother.\u201d Also used are is\u00e4n\u00e4iti<\/strong><\/em> for father\u2019s mother and \u00e4idin\u00e4iti<\/strong><\/em> for mother\u2019s mother.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grandmother in Hindi<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are many words for grandmother in the numerous dialects of Hindi, but in most of them, your nani<\/strong><\/em> is your mother\u2019s mother, and your dadi<\/strong><\/em> is your father\u2019s mother.  Sometimes the word ma is added, so nani<\/strong> ma<\/strong><\/em> and dadi<\/strong> ma<\/strong><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Words for Grandmother in the Romance Languages<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Strangely enough, the romance languages all have different words for grandmother that hardly resemble each other. As previously mentioned, in French the word is grandm\u00e8re<\/strong><\/em>, but in Italian, it\u2019s nonna<\/strong><\/em>. In Spanish, the term is abuela<\/strong><\/em>, or if you want to be cozy and cute about it, you\u2019d call her your abuelita<\/strong><\/em>, which means \u201clittle grandma.\u201d In Portuguese, the word is av\u00f3<\/strong><\/em>. These last two most resemble the Latin word for grandmother, via<\/strong><\/em>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Romanian, the word is bun\u0103<\/em><\/strong>, or bunic\u0103<\/em><\/strong>, a combination of the word bun, meaning \u201cgood\u201d and a Latin word-forming suffix that implies a belonging to or connection with whatever word you\u2019re trying to emphasize. So the Romanian word for grandmother literally translates to \u201cbelonging to good.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Slavic languages<\/a>, the word is some variation of baba<\/strong><\/em>, babushka<\/strong>,<\/em> or babcia<\/strong><\/em>.  In the Basque region, they call their grandmothers, amona<\/strong><\/em>. In German, the formal word is gro\u00dfmutter<\/strong><\/em>, and the familiar word is oma<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Say Grandmother in Hebrew and Yiddish<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Hebrew, the familiar word for grandma is savta<\/strong> or safta<\/strong>, and in Yiddish it\u2019s \u05d1\u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05e2<\/strong> pronounced, \u201cbubbe<\/strong>.\u201d In Greek, the word is \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac<\/strong>, which is pronounced yaya<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Arabic, the word grandma is \u062c\u062f\u062a\u064a<\/strong> pronounced jadati<\/strong><\/em>, though the many dialects of Arabic have different words. In the Zulu language, grandmothers are called gogo<\/strong><\/em>, or ugogo<\/strong><\/em>.  In Swahili it\u2019s bibi<\/strong><\/em>, in Sudanese, nini<\/strong><\/em>, and in Somali, ayeeyo<\/strong><\/em>. In the Igbo language of Nigeria, the word is nne<\/strong> <\/em>nn<\/em>e<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Maori language, the word is kuia<\/strong><\/em>. In Samoan, tinamatua<\/strong><\/em>, from tina<\/em> meaning \u201cmother,\u201d and matua<\/em> meaning \u201cgrand.\u201d In Hawaiian, it\u2019s kupunawahine<\/strong><\/em>, a combination of the words kupuna<\/em>, meaning \u201cgrand,\u201d and wahine<\/em>, meaning \u201cwoman.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Filipino<\/a> the word is lola<\/strong><\/em> and in Thai<\/a> the word is \u0e22\u0e32\u0e22<\/strong> which is pronounced \u201cyeeai<\/strong>.\u201d In Dyirbal, the Aboriginal language of Australia, your gumbu<\/strong><\/em> is your mother\u2019s mother, and your babi<\/strong><\/em> is your father\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grandmother in Japanese, Chinese and Korean<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Japanese, the general word for grandmother is \u304a\u3070\u3042\u3061\u3083\u3093<\/strong>, which is pronounced obaasan<\/strong><\/em>, but sometimes people call their own grandmother \u7956\u6bcd<\/strong> which is pronounced, sobo<\/strong><\/em>. In Mandarin Chinese there are different words for maternal vs paternal grandparents. Your \u5976\u5976<\/strong> (pronounced nai nai<\/strong>) is your father\u2019s grandmother, and your \u59e5\u59e5<\/strong> (pronounced lao lao<\/strong>), is your mother\u2019s mother.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Cantonese, those would be \u5af2\u5af2<\/strong> (pronounced maa maa<\/strong>) and \u5a46\u5a46 (pronounced po po<\/strong>.)  In Korean, the word is \ud560\uba38\ub2c8<\/strong> (pronounced halmeoni<\/strong>.)  In Thai, \u0e22\u0e32\u0e22  (pronounced yeeai.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treasure Your Elders<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whatever you call your grandmother, I hope you call her soon, if you can, to tell her that she is wonderful and that you love her dearly. We must do everything we can to treat our elders with dignity and respect. We should protect and honor them and treasure the time we get with these living pieces of history. I was lucky enough to get 41 years with my amazing grandmother, and for that, I am very grateful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
