{"id":15082,"date":"2020-04-24T17:28:43","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T21:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.pimsleur.com\/?p=15082"},"modified":"2025-11-20T14:37:50","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T19:37:50","slug":"how-languages-save-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/how-languages-save-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"How Languages Can Save Lives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-humanitarian-crises-languages-can-literally-mean-the-difference-between-life-and-death\"><strong>In Humanitarian Crises, Languages Can Literally Mean the Difference Between Life and Death. <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medical translations can help save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that\u2019s not the only way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aid workers sent from NGOs may speak\nmultiple languages, but in rural areas they\u2019re unlikely to speak the same\nlanguages as the natives, meaning mistranslations and misinformation are\ncommon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-languages-are-so-important-in-humanitarian-crises\"><strong>Why Languages Are So Important in Humanitarian Crises<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the West African Ebola crisis of the\nmid-2010s, language barriers were a real hindrance in stopping the disease from\nspreading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aid workers in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia couldn\u2019t communicate with populations in the affected nations, especially in the rural regions. Although around 20% of people in these countries can speak French and English, as the NGO workers could, they are often only spoken as a <em>lingua franca <\/em>in the cities. Outside of the cities, people are more likely to speak only regional and indigenous languages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although information was provided in\nEnglish or French to citizens, people misunderstood it on a large scale. UNICEF\nsurveyed Sierra Leoneans and found that 30% of people thought Ebola was\ntransmitted by mosquitoes. 4 in 10 people thought hot saltwater baths would cure\nthe disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tragically, this misunderstanding caused\nmany more people to be infected and die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-languages-and-disaster-response-during-the-haiti-earthquake\"><strong>Languages and Disaster Response During the Haiti Earthquake<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Haiti earthquake struck in the nation\u2019s\ncapital, Port-au-Prince, on January 21<sup>st<\/sup>, 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For NGOs and disaster response agencies,\nearthquakes provide a different kind of challenge to other natural disasters.\nIn a flood or hurricane, many people would sadly not survive the disaster. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With earthquakes, a higher proportion of\npeople tend to survive the disaster and be left needing medical attention. This\nis exactly what happened in Haiti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the earthquake, there were thousands\nof people trapped and needing medical help. With the air and seaports out of\naction and most communication networks down, the aftermath was a truly\nterrifying time for Haitians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most immediate priorities for relief workers and victims in an earthquake is receiving and relaying information about health centers, food drops, and clean water. In addition, there were an overwhelming number of fractures and head traumas from the earthquake. There was an urgent need for surgeons and medics who could manage wound care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haiti\u2019s proximity to the US \u2013 where many\nNGOs are headquartered \u2013 meant that it got a high number of respondents to the\ncrisis. Doctors flew in from elsewhere in the Americas to help with the medical\ncrisis, as did contractors and engineers to help with the logistical challenge\nof reconstructing the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-language-translation-rapid-response-teams\"><strong>Language Translation Rapid Response Teams<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the main languages spoken in the\nUS and the Americas are English and Spanish. On the other hand, most people in\nHaiti speak Creole, with the majority understanding French also: prior to the\nearthquake, French was the language most Haitian companies used when doing\nbusiness overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To work around this, the non-profit organization <a href=\"https:\/\/translatorswithoutborders.org\/\">Translators Without Borders<\/a> (TWB) assembled and organized a crowd of translators set them to work providing medical translations so that the American doctors\u2019 knowledge could be understood by locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Red Cross also sent a ship of 78\nCreole-speaking volunteers to act as interpreters on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By breaking down the language barriers, TWB\nand the American Red Cross were able to gain consent from Haitians to perform\nlife-saving surgeries on them, explain treatments, and give them support,\nhelping them to feel less afraid of the situation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incoming doctors were able to teach local\ndoctors and nurses both how to perform treatments and the right kind of\nphysical therapy aftercare for patients. This \u201cteach a man to fish\u201d approach\nempowered the local doctors and helped ensure a faster response to future crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aid workers provided logistical support with\ngetting food from the regions to Port-au-Prince.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BBC Mundo service stepped in to provide valuable news, information, and support for locals in Haitian Creole, which was the first time they had ever broadcasted in this language. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Via their radio channels, they spread information vital for survival, such as the locations of field hospitals, rescue teams, water supplies, and food drops. This helped people to find their way to the support they needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BBC also transmitted advice on cholera\nprevention, which was a secondary threat to survivors past the direct trauma\nfrom the earthquake itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through all of these actions, the NGOs helped many people to survive the earthquake and showed that languages can save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-translators-without-borders\"><strong>Translators Without Borders<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you feel confident in your L2 and would\nlike to give translation a try, why not think about volunteering with the\nnon-profit organization, Translators Without Borders?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a motto of \u201cA world where life-saving\nknowledge knows no language barriers\u201d, their mission is to prevent unnecessary\nloss of life in humanitarian crises. They train translators and\ninterpreters, making skilled volunteers available to support on-the-ground aid\nworkers in the event of a disaster. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Name any large-scale humanitarian crisis from the last decade, and you can bet TWB will have played an important role: from helping Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh to providing support in the Yemen conflict, to translating valuable Zika virus education materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-translators-without-borders-and-the-coronavirus-crisis\"><strong>Translators Without Borders and the Coronavirus Crisis<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In the face of the current Covid-19 crisis, TWB is currently translating educational materials into hundreds of languages to help protect nations who have not yet been hit as hard by the virus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TWB not only support with crisis response but also lead preventative drives to educate and prepare the world for medical emergencies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are currently leading a project to\ntranslate the 100 most common medical Wikipedia pages into 100 of the world\u2019s\nminority languages, including simple English. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This gives some of the poorest, most vulnerable people in the world the opportunity to turn an asset like the Internet into medical knowledge, something which they might not normally have access to.
