Again, you\u2019ll see me mentioning&nbsp;Proto Indo European&nbsp;or (PIE), which is a theoretical language that was created using linguistic reconstruction.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Courage<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This word comes to English from an Old French word,&nbsp;<em>corage<\/em>, which refers to the innermost feelings and temperament of one\u2019s emotional heart.&nbsp; French got it from Vulgar Latin,&nbsp;<em>coraticum<\/em>, itself a combination of the Latin word,&nbsp;<em>cor<\/em>, meaning \u201cheart,\u201d and the noun-forming suffix<em>, &#8211;<\/em><em>aticum<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Latin likely got it from the PIE root word&nbsp;<strong>kerd<\/strong><strong>&#8211;<\/strong>&nbsp;which meant \u201cheart.\u201d&nbsp; You\u2019ll recognize this root in words related to the heart, such as&nbsp;<em>cardiac, myocardium, cardio<\/em>, and also words like&nbsp;<em>accord, concord, core<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>credo<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word evolved through Old English&nbsp;and Middle English and didn\u2019t come&nbsp;to mean something roughly akin to \u201cvalor,\u201d&nbsp;until the 14th century.&nbsp; In Middle English, it referred to anything in one\u2019s innermost mind or thoughts, so it&nbsp;was often paired with a clarifying adjective such as bold, wicked or careful, which in this use means that one\u2019s heart is full of cares; in other words, that one is sad.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to the introduction of the word&nbsp;<em>courage<\/em>, English speakers would use&nbsp;<em>ellen<\/em>, meaning \u201cvalor, strength, fortitude, zeal,\u201d which came to English through the Proto-Germanic word&nbsp;<em>aljana<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other day,&nbsp;my mom reminded me of a saying my dear sweet grandma has used many times throughout her years: \u201cHave courage.\u201d&nbsp; As my grandma is approaching her 100th birthday at the end of this month during these uncertain times of pandemic, having courage is something we all must cling to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cCourage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can\u2019t practice any other virtue consistently.\u201d <\/strong><\/p><cite><strong>Maya Angelou&nbsp;<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Resilience<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First recorded in the 1620s, this word literally means, \u201cthe act of rebounding,\u201d and comes from Latin\u00a0<em>resiliens<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>resilire<\/em>, \u201cto recoil or rebound.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<em>Re-<\/em>\u00a0meaning \u201cback\u201d and\u00a0<em>salire<\/em>, \u201cmeaning to jump, leap.\u201d The word\u00a0<em>salire<\/em>\u00a0is likely formed from the PIE root word\u00a0<em>sel<\/em>\u00a0meaning,\u00a0\u201cspring, leap, gush, or quake.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Certainly, we\u00a0could\u00a0all use a bit of resiliency in these trying times.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cLife doesn\u2019t get easier or more forgiving, we get stronger and more resilient.\u201d <\/strong><\/p><cite><strong>Steve&nbsp;Maraboli<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hope<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an extremely old word and no one is sure of its origins. In Old English, the verb form was&nbsp;<em>hopian<\/em>, and cognates can be found in many of the Germanic languages. The noun form was&nbsp;<em>hopa<\/em>, and meant something like \u201cconfidence in the future.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Latin languages, the word for hope is some form of\u00a0<em>esperer<\/em>, which roughly translates as \u201cto wait\u201d or \u201cto expect.\u201d\u00a0 In Arabic, the word is\u00a0<em>amal<\/em>\u00a0and is often used as a first name, see Amal Clooney.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cHope smiles from the threshold of the year to come,&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Whispering \u2018it will be happier\u2019&#8230;\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p><cite><strong>Alfred Lord Tennyson&nbsp;<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Together<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From Old English\u00a0<em>tog\u00e6dere<\/em>, meaning \u201cto be present as an accumulated mass in one place,\u201d this word is a combination of the word-forming element\u00a0<em>to<\/em>, which means, \u201cin the direction of,\u201d and\u00a0<em>g\u00e6dere<\/em>, an adjective which comes from the Proto-Germanic root\u00a0<em>gaduri<\/em>-, meaning \u201cgather\u00a0in a body.\u201d\u00a0 This likely came from the PIE\u00a0root\u00a0<em>ghedh<\/em>&#8211; meaning \u201cto unite or join.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019ll recognize this root in\u00a0the word\u00a0<em>gather<\/em>, and if you say the word\u00a0<em>tog\u00e6dere<\/em>\u00a0out loud, you can easily see how close it resembles \u201cto &#8211; gather.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Old English had an\u00a0additional\u00a0word,\u00a0<em>tosamne<\/em>, which\u00a0also\u00a0meant \u201ctogether.\u201d\u00a0 Other Germanic languages have similar-sounding words\u00a0meaning \u201ctogether,\u201d\u00a0such as German\u00a0<em>zusammen<\/em>; Norwegian and Danish\u00a0<em>sammen<\/em>; Icelandic,\u00a0<em>saman<\/em>; Swedish, <em>tillsammans<\/em>, and Dutch,\u00a0<em>samen<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cAlone we can do so little.&nbsp; Together we can do so much.\u201d <\/strong><\/p><cite><strong>Helen Keller&nbsp;<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Perseverance<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From Old French,\u00a0<em>perseverance<\/em>, meaning, \u201cpersistence, endurance,\u201d from Latin\u00a0<em>perseverare<\/em>, meaning \u201cto continue steadfastly,\u201d\u00a0and is made up of the words\u00a0<em>per<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>severus<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Per<\/em>\u00a0is a Latin word-forming element meaning \u201cvery,\u201d and likely came from PIE\u00a0per-\u00a0meaning \u201cforward, in front of, before.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Severus, means \u201cserious, grave, or strict\u201d and is likely from the PIE root\u00a0<em>segh-<\/em>\u00a0which meant \u201cto have hold of.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019ll recognize this root in words like\u00a0<em>schematic, scholar, ischemia, epoch,<\/em> and\u00a0<em>hectic<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an aside, Harry Potter fans may recognize the word&nbsp;<em>severus<\/em>&nbsp;as the first name of the character Professor Severus Snape, who was portrayed as being very serious, grave and strict, so the name fits.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cLife is not easy for any of us.&nbsp; But what of that?&nbsp; We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves.&nbsp; We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p><cite><strong>Marie Curie<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Heal<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From Old English,\u00a0<em>h\u00e6lan<\/em>, from Proto-Germanic,\u00a0<em>hailjan<\/em>, meaning literally, \u201cto make whole.\u201d\u00a0 This word comes from the PIE root\u00a0<em>kailo<\/em>&#8211; meaning, \u201cof good omen, unharmed, well, whole,\u201d and you\u2019ll recognize it in the word\u00a0<em>hail<\/em>, as in \u201cto greet,\u201d and the Old\u00a0Norse word\u00a0<em>helge<\/em>, meaning \u201choly, or sacred.\u201d\u00a0 The names Helga and Olga both come from that Old Norse word.\u00a0 Before advancements in medical science, health was considered a\u00a0holy\u00a0gift from the divine.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cThe wound is the place where the Light enters you.\u201d <\/strong><\/p><cite><strong>Rumi&nbsp;<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Community<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From Old French,\u00a0<em>comunit\u00e9<\/em>, from Latin\u00a0<em>communitatem<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0<em>communis<\/em>, meaning, \u201ccommon, public, shared.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0This is likely from the PIE roots,\u00a0<em>ko-<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>mei-.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<em>Ko-<\/em>\u00a0meaning \u201ctogether,\u201d which you\u2019ll recognize from all words beginning with co-.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Mei-<\/em> means, \u201cto change, go or move,\u201d which you can see in words like\u00a0<em>mutate, permeate, transmute<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>migrate<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before Old French infiltrated Old English, the word for community was&nbsp;<em>gam\u00e6nscipe<\/em>,&nbsp;which contains the word&nbsp;<em>m\u00e6ne<\/em>, which you\u2019ll recognize from the&nbsp;Modern English&nbsp;word&nbsp;<em>mean<\/em>, as in \u201ccommon.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cWhat should young people do with their lives today?&nbsp;
