Here are our favorite French Christmas traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern French Christmas traditions include the appearance of <em><strong>Le P\u00e8re No\u00ebl<\/strong><\/em> (Santa Claus.) However, <em>Le P\u00e8re No\u00ebl<\/em> has only been popular since the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century. Before that, <em>Saint Nicolas<\/em> was celebrated on December 6th by Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and the east of France. Saint Nicholas later inspired our modern-day Santa, dressed in red, thanks to American cartoonists like Thomas Nast and writers such as George Webster. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-french-christmas-music-chansons-de-noel\"><strong>French Christmas Music &#8211; <\/strong><em><strong>Chansons de No\u00ebl<\/strong><\/em><strong> <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While most <em>chansons de No\u00ebl<\/em> (Christmas songs) are in English and come from the United States (\u201c<em>All I Want for Christmas is You<\/em>\u201d by Mariah Carey is obviously a classic!), France has some traditional and popular Christmas songs too. The most well-known is <em>Petit Papa No\u00ebl<\/em> sung by the French singer Tino Rossi in 1946. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clear clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"flex-video widescreen youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tino Rossi - Petit Papa Noel (Version Originale de 1946 remasteris\u00e9e)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/WQushjP2Wqk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some other songs have also been translated into French, like <em>Mon Beau Sapin<\/em> in 1856 from the original German song <em>O Tannenbaum,<\/em> and <em>Vive le Vent <\/em>in 1948 that is a French adaptation of the American song <em>Jingle Bells<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French people, however, don\u2019t usually embrace Christmas with the same passion as some other countries like the United States. Consequently, Christmas carols aren\u2019t a big deal in France and you probably won\u2019t hear Christmas songs on the streets or in malls if you go shopping! <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-christmas-in-paris\"><strong>Christmas in Paris<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in Paris in December, though, take a look at the window displays of the luxury stores <em>Les Galeries Lafayettes Haussmann <\/em>or <em>Le Printemps Haussmann<\/em>. Windows come to life with animated puppets and light shows. If you go inside <em>Les Galeries Lafayette<\/em>, you\u2019ll notice the magnificent Christmas tree that stands under the dome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a magical French Christmas, go to the third floor of the main store and admire the stunning view from the 9-meter long walkway suspended 16 meters high in the air. If you feel like spending a lot of money, go to <em>Le Bon March\u00e9<\/em>, which is another luxury store, located in the very chic 7<sup>th<\/sup> <em>arrondissement <\/em>of Paris. They display magical decorations for an enchanted (but expensive) Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-french-christmas-movies\"><strong>French Christmas Movies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During the holiday season, some classic movies are featured on TV such as <em>Le P\u00e8re No\u00ebl est Une Ordure<\/em> (Santa Claus Is a Stinker) which is a well-known French comedy that was first released in 1982.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clear clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"flex-video widescreen youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Le P\u00e8re No\u00ebl Est Une Ordure - Bande Annonce 1982\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/tXA6y0lWvZg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-french-christmas-markets-m-arches-de-noel\"><strong>French Christmas Markets &#8211; M<\/strong><em><strong>arch\u00e9s de No\u00ebl<\/strong><\/em><strong> <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During Christmas-time, many <em>March\u00e9s de No\u00ebl<\/em> (Christmas markets) are held throughout France. The Christmas market tradition has its origins in Western and Central Europe, mainly Germany, as well as in the east of France. One of the most famous and oldest <em>march\u00e9 de No\u00ebl <\/em>takes place in Strasbourg every year. Located on the <em>Grande \u00cele<\/em> near Strasbourg Cathedral, this Christmas market boasts a stunning <em>sapin de No\u00ebl <\/em>(Christmas tree). Christmas markets normally start in early December and feature small shops selling Christmas decorations, and traditional Christmas food like <em>pain d\u2019\u00e9pice<\/em> (gingerbread), <em>vin chaud<\/em> (mulled wine)<em>,<\/em> and other home-made products. Christmas lights embellish the place and music may be played too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clear clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"flex-video widescreen youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bienvenue au marche\u0301 de Noe\u0308l de Strasbourg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/yTEvSSKIl6M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-traditional-french-christmas-cocktail-vin-chaud\"><strong>Traditional French Christmas Cocktail &#8211; Vin Chaud<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the mood for a comforting Christmas drink at home?&nbsp; Here is the recipe of the traditional <em>vin chaud<\/em> that you can easily make yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ingr\u00e9dients :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1.5 liters of <em>vin rouge<\/em> (1 and a half bottles of red wine, inexpensive is fine)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>200 grams of <em>sucre roux<\/em> (1 cup brown sugar)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 <em>zeste de citron<\/em> (zest of 1 lemon) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 <em>zeste d\u2019orange<\/em> (zest of 1 orange)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>2 b\u00e2tons de cannelle<\/em> (2 cinnamon sticks)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>2 \u00e9toiles de badiane<\/em> (2 star anise) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>2 clous de girofle<\/em> (2 cloves)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>1 morceau de gingembre coup\u00e9<\/em> (1 piece fresh ginger, sliced)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>1 pinc\u00e9e de noix de muscade moulu <\/em>(pinch of ground nutmeg) <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour the red wine in a large pot and bring to low heat. Add the brown sugar, stirring well. Then, add the other ingredients: cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, and lemon and orange zest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gently bring to a simmer and wait for 5 to 10 minutes, until the sugar is dissolved, and the wine is hot. Serve it hot immediately using a sieve to strain the solid ingredients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-le-reveillon-et-le-jour-de-noel\"><em><strong>Le R\u00e9veillon et le Jour de No\u00ebl <\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Children are told to behave all year long to get presents for Christmas. In early December, they write a letter to le<em> P\u00e8re No\u00ebl<\/em>, saying how good they\u2019ve been over the past year and what <em>cadeaux<\/em> (presents) they wish to have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kids are told that Santa is coming from the North Pole and will give out presents between December 24<sup>th<\/sup> and 25th from his <em>tra\u00eeneau<\/em> (sled) pulled by <em>des<\/em> <em>rennes<\/em> (reindeers). <em>Des lutins<\/em> (the elves) help <em>P\u00e8re No\u00ebl<\/em> pack the mountains of gifts on his sled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French kids normally have a <em>calendrier de l\u2019Avent <\/em>(Advent calendar) before Christmas. Every day, from December 1<sup>st<\/sup> until Christmas Day, they open a door behind which they find a chocolate treat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-la-veille-de-noel-christmas-eve-in-france\"><em><strong>La Veille de No\u00ebl<\/strong><\/em><strong> &#8211; Christmas Eve in France<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On <em>la veille de No\u00ebl<\/em> (On Christmas\u2019 Eve), families gather at night and celebrate over a special dinner. Dinner usually starts around 8<sup>PM<\/sup> and people <em>se mettent sur leur trente-et-un<\/em> (Literally, \u201cthey dress up on their thirty-one\u201d, which means they dress up to the nines). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foods served may vary but a typical Christmas dinner is made of: <em>foie gras, saumon fum\u00e9<\/em> (smoked salmon), <em>escargots<\/em> (snails),<em> hu\u00eetres<\/em> <em>ou fruits de mer<\/em> (oysters or seafood), <em>un chapon ou une dinde<\/em> <em>aux marrons<\/em> (a capon or a turkey served with chestnuts). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, the dessert is usually <em>une b\u00fbche de No\u00ebl<\/em> (literally, a Christmas Yule log. <em>La b\u00fbche <\/em>is a dessert shaped like a log that consists of a rolled cake full of\u2026butter and chocolate). &nbsp;<em>Du champagne<\/em> (champagne) is traditionally served <em>\u00e0 l\u2019ap\u00e9ritif<\/em> (before meal) or\/and <em>pour le dessert<\/em> (for dessert). Food is an important part of Christmas in France and dinner may last for several hours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-slippers-under-the-christmas-tree\"><strong>Slippers Under the Christmas Tree<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike in the US, kids do not hang their stockings over the fireplace. Instead, they leave their <em>chaussons<\/em> (slippers) or <em>chaussures<\/em> (shoes) underneath the Christmas tree. This way, <em>le P\u00e8re No\u00ebl<\/em> knows whose slippers are whose and where to leave the presents when he comes down the chimney. Kids may also leave some cookies and drinks for Santa as well as milk for the reindeer underneath the Christmas tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While presents are traditionally opened on Christmas Day in the morning, more and more kids are opening them on Christmas Eve. One of the reasons is that adults also give presents to one another during or after the meal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catholics may go to <em>la messe de minuit<\/em> (midnight mass) after Christmas Eve dinner to attend mass and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Many families also arrange <em>une cr\u00e8che<\/em> (a nativity scene) underneath the Christmas tree when they decorate their Christmas tree. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <em>le jour de No\u00ebl <\/em>(On Christmas day), family members gather together. When you have a large family, you may spend Christmas Eve with some relatives and Christmas Day with some others or your <em>belle-famille<\/em> (family-in-law). Christmas lunch is not that different from Christmas Eve dinner and may last the entire afternoon!
