Two of the world\u2019s oldest caf\u00e9s, Caff\u00e9 Florian and Caff\u00e9 Greco, are located in Venice and Rome respectively and fully-operating since the 1700s.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Caff\u00e9 Florian in Venice, Italy&nbsp;<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, coffee has ingrained itself in the Italian culture as Italians have taken it upon themselves to perfect the art of coffee-making.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More specifically, espresso-making.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-italians-perfected-the-espresso-we-know-amp-love-today\"><strong>Italians Perfected the Espresso We Know &amp; Love Today<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Italy is known as the \u201ccoffee capital\u201d for its contribution to the coffee world by inventing and perfecting the espresso.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crafting the quintessential Italian (non-alcoholic) beverage was no easy feat.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/the-long-history-of-the-espresso-machine-126012814\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">invention of the espresso machine<\/a> in 1884 marked the beginning of the espresso craze in Italy. The espresso machine was first patented in Turin by a man named Angelo Moriondo.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, there have been numerous improvements suggested by Italian coffee makers to make the espresso stronger, quicker, and more consistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-look-at-the-careful-science-of-espresso-making\"><strong>A Look at the Careful Science of Espresso Making<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Water with a temperature of ~90 degrees F (~32 degrees C) is put under extreme pressure (9 bar, which is 9 times the pressure at sea level) to produce the purest form of coffee possible.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A typical serving of espresso contains 120-170 milligrams of caffeine, which is actually slightly less than a typical serving of filter coffee, but because of the smaller volume, espresso thus has higher caffeine content.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Local Insider Tip: <\/strong>The only truth every Italian knows about our coffee is that the best coffee is found in Napoli!<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-italian-bar-culture-where-to-get-your-coffee-like-a-local\"><strong>Italian Bar Culture: Where to Get Your Coffee Like a Local<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you are attending a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/learn-italian-music-history\/\">Venetian<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.pimsleur.com\/2014\/04\/11\/learn-italian-music-history\/\"> Opera performance<\/a> or taking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pimsleur.com\/blog\/5-best-things-to-do-in-capri-italy\/\">day trip to the island of Capri<\/a>, you will encounter Italians going to the bar for coffee.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of religiously grabbing drive-thru coffee as we do in the U.S., Italians enjoy a visit to the bar to socialize, smoke, and sip on what they deem<em> il vero caff\u00e8 <\/em>(the real coffee).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bar-vs-caffe-what-are-the-major-differences\"><strong>Bar vs. Caff\u00e8: What Are the Major Differences?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When going out to drink coffee, Italians head to a bar. <strong>Most bars in Italy serve coffee<\/strong> along with alcohol, and usually a selection of pastries, snacks, or small plates. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless,<strong> Italians know the difference between a <em>caff\u00e8<\/em> mostly due to U.S. cultural influence (movies, music, etc.) <\/strong>which started in the last century.<strong> <\/strong>It seems odd to Americas to say \u201cI\u2019m heading to the bar for breakfast!\u201d but that\u2019s where Italians drink their coffee (there\u2019s also one conveniently located on every corner!).<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-7-most-common-italian-coffee-faux-pas-to-avoid\"><strong>The 7 Most Common Italian Coffee Faux Pas to Avoid<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the top tourist coffee flops that happen in Italy. Don\u2019t say we didn\u2019t warn you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-afternoon-cappuccinos-are-only-for-tourists\"><strong>1. Afternoon Cappuccinos Are Only For Tourists<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Italians typically consider cappuccinos to be a \u201cbreakfast coffee\u201d. Anyone caught ordering a cappuccino after 11 AM is automatically labeled a tourist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-do-you-have-creamer\"><strong>2. \u201cDo You Have Creamer?\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Italians do not use creamer to sweeten their coffee. You can ask for it, but they won\u2019t have it. You\u2019ll typically have to settle for milk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-if-you-ask-for-a-coffee-you-ll-get-an-espresso-nbsp\"><strong>3. If You Ask For a Coffee, You\u2019ll Get an Espresso&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the default \u201ccoffee\u201d in Italy. Italian bars and caff\u00e9s typically don\u2019t have American drip coffee laying around. If you want an <em>americano<\/em>, you\u2019ll get a watered-down espresso in a cappuccino sized glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-a-latte-is-not-coffee-nbsp\"><strong>4. A Latte is Not Coffee&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ordering just a <em>latte<\/em> will get you a glass of warm milk. However, if you specify that you want a <em>caff\u00e8 latte<\/em>, you will get an espresso with steamed milk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-to-go-cups-are-not-typical-nbsp\"><strong>5. To-Go Cups Are Not Typical&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Italians like to enjoy their time at the bar, even if it is just a few minutes, so coffee is almost always served in a porcelain coffee cup. Some exceptions may be train station caf\u00e9s or chain coffee shops that have many travelers coming through.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-iced-coffee-is-only-a-thing-in-the-summer-nbsp\"><strong>6. Iced Coffee is Only a Thing in the Summer&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Does iced coffee exist in Italy? Yes, but only during the summer when it\u2019s really hot. We call it <em>caff\u00e8 shakerato<\/em> (which is a loan word from English for \u201cshaken\u201d). It\u2019s an espresso shaken with ice cubes and sugar and served in a martini glass (James Bond style).<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any other time of the year (unless you are at a Starbucks), you probably won\u2019t find iced coffee or cold brew.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-don-t-expect-non-dairy-milk-nbsp\"><strong>7. Don\u2019t Expect Non-Dairy Milk&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there are some people asking for dairy substitutes in big cities across Italy, many have not jumped on the non-dairy milk bandwagon. It doesn\u2019t hurt to try asking for oat milk or almond milk, but you might get scoffed at in smaller towns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-11-essential-italian-coffee-styles-you-must-know-nbsp\"><strong>11 Essential Italian Coffee Styles You Must Know&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coffee is a way of life for most Italians. The ability to successfully order your coffee in Italy will show the locals that you respect and appreciate their culture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-let-s-get-our-italian-coffee-styles-in-order-before-we-order-nbsp\"><strong>Let\u2019s get our Italian coffee styles in order before we order:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-espresso-nbsp\"><strong>1. Espresso&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">(Also simply known as <em>caff\u00e8<\/em>.) The most basic form of coffee served in an espresso cup (If you ask for coffee in Italy, this will be the go-to portion.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-americano-nbsp\"><strong>2. Americano&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Espresso with hot water added to it, a much thinner brew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-cappuccino-nbsp\"><strong>3. Cappuccino&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Espresso with foam and steamed milk (and many Italians also like powdered chocolate on top.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-macchiato\"><strong>4. Macchiato<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Similar to a cappuccino, but just a splash of milk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-marocchino\"><strong>5. Marocchino<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From the Italian word, <em>Morrocan<\/em> (Moroccan) comes an espresso mixed with either hot chocolate or cocoa powder, topped with foam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-caffe-latte-different-from-a-latte-nbsp\"><strong>6. Caff\u00e8 Latte (Different from a Latte)&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Espresso mixed with steamed milk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-caffe-lungo-nbsp\"><strong>7. Caff\u00e8 Lungo&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A \u201clong\u201d espresso (pulling out more water and thus more caffeine from just one espresso.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-caffe-doppio-nbsp\"><strong>8. Caff\u00e8 Doppio&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A double espresso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-caffe-corretto-nbsp\"><strong>9. Caff\u00e8 Corretto&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Espresso \u201ccorrected\u201d with a shot of liquor, most commonly Italian grappa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-caffe-corto-nbsp\"><strong>10. Caff\u00e8 Corto&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A \u201cshort\u201d espresso (less quantity, more aroma, less caffeine.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-11-decaffeinato\"><strong>11.
