Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Unit 01-05:

I have been through all 30 lessons and am in the process of going through them a second time. It is very helpful to keep up the pace and try hard to not let too many days pass between lessons. Even though it seems like the scenario is an older man talking to a younger woman, that expands in later lessons. The main thing to be aware of is that you are learning the northern dialect. Things will sound different in the south, but most people will not have trouble understanding what you say.

Service and delivery comments:

There is a problem I have from the very outset of this course. It is the difference between the way the woman and the man say the very same words at times. The most confusing example is "I understand" or "Tôi hiểu". The man keeps adding and extra syllable that makes it sound like "hee-yo-ho" while the woman says "hee-yo" which sound more correct from every other language program I have used.

I know that this program focuses on listening and repeating, but I wish there were a printed recap of each lesson to assist in proper pronunciation. There are some words that I think they are saying one thing and I have actually realized that I was using the wrong consonants. An example is "thể" which sounds like it begins with a hard "P" sound. The pronunciation lessons at the end are helpful, but they should follow each lesson and coincide with the words learned in the lesson.

Another suggestion about the iPhone app: please make the pause and start buttons bigger and include the date last listened to under each lesson. It would make it easier to know which lesson to go to next since I am going through them all a second time.

Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Unit 01-05:

I'm at Unit 15 so far and enjoying it a lot. I like the listen and repeat method and the was it's taught the words and phrases really stay in your mind. No complaints about the teaching method at all. The lengths of the lessons are just right...about a half hour for each. In the past I have done 2 per day and sometimes i'll go back and click randomly through past lessons to review...these lessons build on each other so it's good for that.

Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Unit 01-05:

I like the method that Pimsleur uses best out of products that I have tried. However, what I am looking for is a program to teach me some basic phrases for use while traveling. This program fails at that. It teaches nice, but unnecessary, niceties; phrases my Vietnamese friends say younger people in casual situatins do not use. It also focuses heavily on conversations of a man meeting a younger woman and inviting her out for drinks, going to her house for dinner, etc. Not helpful. I am a young woman traveling with my husband.
