Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet

Vietnamese is spoken by some 80 million people in Vietnam and approximately 2 million people overseas. Vietnamese has 3 main dialects: northern, central, and southern. Pimsleur's Vietnamese teaches the contemporary Hanoi (northern) dialect, which is the widely-spoken standard Vietnamese.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Vietnamese, Comprehensive includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Vietnamese alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with Vietnamese pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I had already used the Foreign Services Institute Basic Vietnamese a few years ago, so I had a little background going into this (although I'd forgotten a lot of what I had learned). I found it very useful, particularly with the tones. In the FSI course, the speakers speak very fast and it's sometimes hard to catch the tones. The amount of repetition in this course from the prior days also keeps everything fresh in your mind.

I really wish they had a Vietnamese 2 course. I still have a long way to go to achieve even basic fluency. Note that this is Northern accent, as are most other Vietnamese language courses (except the FSI course, IIRC).

I used the mobile version most of the time and found it very easy to use, even in the reading lessons.

Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

My girlfriend is Vietnamese and I did this as a crash course before traveling to Vietnam to meet her family. Course helped me master some basics such as "Hello", "I am American", and "I don't speak Vietnamese well", which impressed her folks. Phrases such as "where is ___ Street" did not come in so handy, nor did my girlfriend understand what I was saying when I was mentioning them. I probably need more practice with this.

Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

The interactive software does an excellent job introducing the learner to the Vietnamese language. This is a particularly difficult language for a westerner, as it has many sounds that do not exist en European tongues. The use of modified Latin characters in Vietnamese is anything but intuitive, as the individual letters, and combinations thereof do not sound in Vietnamese like anything a beginner might expect. I am working slowly through the program in anticipation to a trip to Vietnam, and I believe I will profit inmensely from this course. To my amazement, I can already understand some basic written and spoken sentences in Vietnamese. Look forward to learning more.

Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

This is a great system and a great product. I typically would listen to a section 2 or 3 times a day, usually when driving or walking. I like that you learn the language in chunks as opposed to studying lists of vocab words and stringing them together. I was rather befuddled to find so many mistakes though. Many of the errors occur when the instructing voice gives a cue to say something in Vietnamese but an entirely different word is said instead. These are mistakes that anyone could pick up on, even if they didn't know a singe word of vietnamese, just by paying attention and listening critically. Either they didn't bother with a final edit, or the editor doesn't have a sharp attention span. Still though, I don't think the fact that there were mistakes throughout detracted from its effectiveness, it's more of a head scratcher than anything else.

          Service and delivery comments:

It would be nice to see more levels offered as there is presently only one.

Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I'm quite satisfy with the product for that price. The only issue I have is that the reading portion of does not coordinate with the listening section. I wish they could fix this and update it for me.
