The Easiest and Fastest Way to Learn Vietnamese
Whether you want to travel, communicate with friends or colleagues, reconnect with family, or just understand more of what’s going on in the world around you, learning Vietnamese will expand your horizons and immeasurably enrich your life.

The best part is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or take years to master. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes, and we get you speaking right from the first day. Pimsleur courses use a scientifically-proven method that puts you in control of your learning. If you’ve tried other language learning methods but found they simply didn’t stick, then you owe it to yourself to give Pimsleur a try.

Why Pimsleur?
- Quick + Easy – Only 30 minutes a day.
- Portable + Flexible – Core lessons can be done anytime, anywhere, and easily fit into your busy life.
- Proven Method – Works when other methods fail.
- Self-Paced – Go fast or go slow – it’s up to you.
- Based in Science – Developed using proven research on memory and learning.
- Cost-effective – Less expensive than classes or immersion, and features all native speakers.
- Genius – Triggers your brain’s natural aptitude to learn.
- Works for everyone – Recommended for ages 13 and above.

What’s Included?
- 30, 30-minute audio lessons
- 60 minutes of reading instruction to provide you with an introduction to reading Vietnamese designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent
- In total, 16 hours of audio, all featuring native speakers
- a Reading Booklet and a User’s Guide

What You’ll Learn
In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.

In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.

In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the Vietnamese language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading Vietnamese. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with Vietnamese pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Vietnamese Language
Vietnamese is spoken by some 80 million people in Vietnam and approximately 2 million people overseas. Vietnamese has 3 main dialects: northern, central, and southern. Pimsleur's Vietnamese teaches the contemporary Hanoi (northern) dialect, which is the widely-spoken standard Vietnamese.

My girlfriend is Vietnamese, so I wanted to understand the chat at her home; also to show off. Was curious about the writing I've seen on VN Restaurant signs. English instructor is very polished, authoritative. Native VN speakers consistent; fast when speaking sentences, as it should be. Extremely well produced.

Useful phrases and words, scientifically repeated. Tonal aspects. This is a Cadillac course, not cheap, but for me, worth it. Instills must-speak-it study habits. Phrases chosen: how to buy and pay, greetings, asking for the time, family introductions, more. Basics of pronunciation, simple grammar, excellent. Most helpful to tourists who will be in northern places such as Hanoi. I felt like I had my own personal tutor. I replay CDs for more review.

Would have preferred less slow-paced repetition in exchange for additional useful phrases; words; situations. My friends are from Saigon with different dialect, a bit of a problem. Those serious about learning VN will need additional resources and experience. Tonality is hard to speak and understand at native speeds no matter how it's taught.

It is not worth the cost... at times the man is hard to understand and he and the girl do not pronounce some words the same. Needs written lesson to go with it. Elementary Vietnamese 3rd edition is much better and downlod book and MP3 for $29. Covers grammar and explains everything. Also by Binh Nhu Ngo.

Comments about Pimsleur Vietnamese Level 1 MP3:

I purchased this course to supplement my Vietnamese studies in Saigon. Since I was learning Southern Vietnamese I wanted something to help me understand Northern Vietnamese and Pimsleur fit the bill. I was very happy with the way it helped me with understanding spoken Vietnamese along with my class room studies. My only complaint would be there is no written supplement to go along with the course. That would be a great addition to make it even better.

PIMSLEUR VIETNAMESE-- A LITTLE OUTDATED BUT STILL FUNCTIONAL

Comments about Pimsleur Vietnamese Level 1 MP3:

Pimsleur is one of the best language programs I have ever used. But the Vietnamese program seems to be based in the 1940s or 1950s and is in serious need of updating updating. First person titles that are taught are far outdated and not accurate, and if used as taught, will result in unintended insults regarding relative age relationships in Vietnam. These titles are not to be taken lightly in Vietnam. Also, the program is strictly northern dialect, which is a little awkward in the South, but, is still functional. Not the best Pimsleur program, but useful if augmented with plenty of self-study and tutoring from a Vietnamese person.

Comments about Pimsleur Vietnamese Level 1 MP3:

Although I have reached intermediate level before starting Pimsleur using other methods and with a teacher, this enabled me to perfect pronunciation which is vital to be understood in Vietnamese. I was able to follow each 30 minute lesson without having to think hard and while walking my dog or riding my bicycle, I like how repetition gets you to improve without feeling like you are making an effort, it's enjoyable rather than a chore. A big regret is that level 2 and 3 are not yet available in Vietnamese so if you finish level 1, please send an email to Pimsleur they said if enough of us request it they will consider developing additional levels!

Comments about Pimsleur Vietnamese Level 1 MP3:

Everything about this product is great. It's the only Vietnamese learning tool that I've used that actually has a pedagogical method. You might quibble with the method, but in my experience, it's very effective. I have also used L-Lingo Vietnamese, Vietnamesepod101 (Word Power utility only) and Duolingo Vietnamese (currently Level 13). I also continue to use Elementary Vietnamese (book and recordings). All of these products have their place, but they cannot match Pimsleur. However, Level One is not enough. Levels Two and Three are necessary to achieve something resembling basic fluency. I contacted Pimsleur over three years ago about plans for Level Two, and they were not very encouraging. Our loss.

Comments about Pimsleur Vietnamese Level 1 MP3:

At first I did not like it as no written supplement to go with it and the man was hard to understand, and he pronounces some words different than the female speaker. I decided to go through the 30 lessons again and I was surprised at how much more Vietnamese I could understand. I got this course as a supplement to my Vietnamese classes and to understand the northern accent. I have to say I went from disappointed to impressed. Their app is really nice as I have it on my PC tablet and cellphone and it keeps all devices in sync.
