The Easiest and Fastest Way to Learn Ukrainian
Whether you want to travel, communicate with friends or colleagues, reconnect with family, or just understand more of what’s going on in the world around you, learning Ukrainian will expand your horizons and immeasurably enrich your life.

The best part is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or take years to master. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes, and we get you speaking right from the first day. Pimsleur courses use a scientifically-proven method that puts you in control of your learning. If you’ve tried other language learning methods but found they simply didn’t stick, then you owe it to yourself to give Pimsleur a try.

Why Pimsleur?
- Quick + Easy – Only 30 minutes a day.
- Portable + Flexible – Core lessons can be done anytime, anywhere, and easily fit into your busy life.
- Proven Method – Works when other methods fail.
- Self-Paced – Go fast or go slow – it’s up to you.
- Based in Science – Developed using proven research on memory and learning.
- Cost-effective – Less expensive than classes or immersion, and features all native speakers.
- Genius – Triggers your brain’s natural aptitude to learn.
- Works for everyone – Recommended for ages 13 and above.

What’s Included?
- 30, 30-minute audio lessons
- 60 minutes of reading instruction to provide you with an introduction to reading Ukrainian designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent
- In total, 16 hours of audio, all featuring native speakers
- a Reading Booklet and a User’s Guide

What You’ll Learn
In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.

In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.

In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the Ukrainian language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading Ukrainian. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with Ukrainian pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Ukrainian Language
Ukrainian, a Slavic language, is the mother tongue of more than 50 million people. There are 3 major dialects of Ukrainian -- Northwest, Southwest, and East; they are mutually intelligible. Pimsleur's Ukrainian teaches Standard Ukrainian, the official state language of Ukraine.

Tech Talk
- CDs are formatted for playing in all CD players, including car players, and users can copy files for use in iTunes or Windows Media Player.

I listened to the Pimsleur Ukrainian course over the course of 45 days (took some extra time to review) primarily while driving my car and running. Now I find myself able to make up sentences! I can hear the words I was taught resonating through my mind at times, like a song that is stuck in your head. I really would like to continue on with this format, and hope the publishers consider releasing an advanced level Ukrainian. Thanks and Best Regards!

First off, everyone who writes a review is coming from their own personal perspective. Second, I consider myself "linguistically challenged" so take that into consideration when reading my review. NOTE: This is the second attempt at a review. My previous review, which was nearly identical to this one, was deleted after a day or so.

I found the program to be disappointing for several reasons. The main reason is the subject material of the dialogs. The dialogs appear to be written to target business travelers who will find themselves in bars or clubs. Much of the dialog is geared around formal conversation with strangers or casual acquaintances. In contrast, as we each learn our own native language, the structure begins as informal dialog usually between parent and child. Nouns and verbs form the basic building blocks of language. Grammar and sentence structure are added then tenses, adjectives, adverbs, etc. follow. I wish that the material had worked toward learning more vocabulary and focused less on phrases and irrelevant dialog during the beginning units. A broader vocabulary, even with no sentence structure at all, will allow for a wider degree of communication with a native speaker. Structure and grammar can be learned after obtaining a strong vocabulary.

In many cases there was a lot of time spent on learning how to say street names and geographical locations that may not be relevant to the student. I have been to Ukraine four times in the last four years and have never needed to know how to fluently pronounce street names. Signs are clear and directions easy to find on a map. If a traveler does need to ask for directions, street names can be sounded out and a native speaker would understand even if the pronunciation was not perfect.

I also found that a lot of time was spent going over fairly simple words and phrases while more complex words and phrases were passed over quickly and with little repetition. This left me feeling frustrated and not wanting to proceed. The material was also spoken quickly as a native speaker would speak, making it difficult at times to hear the words concisely. The vast majority of students will not be speaking like a native speaker after 16 hours of lessons. They may think they have perfected the accent but a native speaker will know immediately that the student is not a native speaker. The fact is, even total immersion in a new language doesn't guarantee that the student will speak fluently and with perfect accent. There should be less emphasis put on trying to speak exactly like a native speaker and more emphasis put on expanding relevant vocabulary for better communication.

After 4 hours of lessons I have decided to stop the program. In 4 hours, the material has covered a few greetings, how to ask if someone can speak or understand Ukrainian or English, how to ask for directions to a few specific streets or restaurants, how to ask if someone wants to eat or drink something or have lunch, how to order beer or wine, and how to tell someone you would like to buy a CD. Other than the greetings and being able to tell someone I don't understand Ukrainian very well, the rest of the material is completely irrelevant to me. I don't go to bars, I don't drink alcohol and I know how to get to Khreshchatyk. I had hoped that this program would have given more vocabulary to enable the student to communicate more subjects. Perhaps later lessons do this but I have found I am able to learn more on my own just by focusing on words and subjects that most people use every day. My pronunciation may not be perfect but at least I will be able to do more than buy a CD or a beer when I am in Ukraine.

Comments about Pimsleur Ukrainian Level 1 MP3:

Ukrainian is a wonderful language, very melodic. I really enjoy the Pimsleur method also. It seems almost effortless! I listen to the CDs as I drive to and from work. My commute is just long enough to get through a lesson each way. I average about one lesson a week.

I got the MP3 download and burned them to CDs myself.

Comments about Pimsleur Ukrainian Level 1 MP3:

I use the product while I am commuting to and from work. Which is perfect for a 30 minute lesson! Each new lesson is challenging, but I usually get them done in about a week. The only drawback I have found is that sometimes I misinterpret what they are saying. So I have to check it online to make sure I am hearing/saying the words correctly. It doesn't happen very often though.

Comments about Pimsleur Ukrainian Level 1 MP3:

Fairly useful, but not completely accurate. I'm using this while in Ukraine, and our linguists point out that this program is clearly arranged by a native English speaker who learned Ukrainian instead of vice versa. There are clear flaws in just some of the basic questions and statements.

Comments about Pimsleur Ukrainian Level 1 MP3:

The product is great to learn the language and the pronunciation. I also like the fact that the course is adapted to the language. Obviously, the downside of it is that you do not learn to read the language. I would recommend taking a course to learn to read as well as the Pimsleur course.

      Service and delivery comments:

I downloaded the app and lessons on Android, and everything woks fine, although I think the Android app is a bit slow.
