Comments about Turkish Phase 1, Unit 06-10:

I have learned to speak 4 languages using the Pimsleur series. When I traveled, I knew enough to ask directions, order meals, exchange polite greetings and farewells, and have a basic grasp of grammar and pronunciation so that I could compose questions with the help of a dictionary. More importantly, I could almost always understand the response. I was frequently complimented on my pronunciation. This language (Turkish), however, is far more difficult. I have to listen 3-4 times before I feel comfortable speaking the few new sentences introduced in each lesson. There are no cognates with which to make word associations and the grammar is so different from English that it is hard to get my head around. Pimsleur has done a great job, but I'm not sure I'll feel as confident as I did speaking Romance languages. I wish there were reading activities as there are with their other programs because I believe learning the vowel pronunciation would make it easier to understand the grammar (esp. vowel harmony). As presented, the vowels are very difficult to distinguish, and the pronunciation by the two speakers is not always the same.

Of the curricula we've tried, this has been the best way to learn Turkish. Our only complaint is that there is no visual/written component.
