Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet

Standard Thai, the dialect taught in the Pimsleur course, is also known as Central Thai or Siamese, and it is the official language of Thailand. Sometimes called the Bangkok Dialect, it is spoken by about 25 million people.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Thai Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  •  In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Thai alphabet. These lessons, which total about an hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Pimsleur Thai is the best language course on audio CDs bar none, in my experience but the fact that after all these years Pimsleur have STILL not come out with levels 2 and 3 like most of the other languages really makes it a bit of a dead end. I turned to other materials from other providers, none of whom are remotely as effective as Pimsleur system and where you learn slower, and I visit Thailand at least twice annually on my pre-retirement path. Pimsleur however is the best system when away from Land of Smiles and I have already used all 3 Japanese modules and now started the Chinese but I have lobbied them to make higher level courses 2 and 3 in Thai but stll in 2013 no sign of this happening yet. I am sure MANY people would buy these if you make them, so please put them on the urgent development list.

I've been studying Pimsleur almost 2 years. I have to go to Thailand in 4 years so I am going slowly. Cracks me up when they say a "language in 10 days". Hilarious. The course gives a good basis of Thai. But one is nowhere near everyday conversations. One could survive those awkward first meetings for about 15 minutes but thats about it. I walk to work an hour each way and wear my headphones to listen and learn. I'd say I use it for a good 6 hours a week minimum. Its an excellent way of mastering the fundamentals of their grammar and intonations. I just wish there were a Thai II or III. This only scratches the surface. I'm married to a Thai by the way and yes she is a horrible teacher.

Comments about Thai Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I am a big fan of Pimsleur. I have all sets of the Spanish DVDs and have used them extensively.

I go to thailand frequently I use Pimsleur's complete set of Thai CDs before I go. I feel that I have a good basic vocabulary after this review. I wish they had more Thai CDs for me to purchase to further add to my vocabulary.

Comments about Thai Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I have looked into other Thai programs that want you to learn to read and write Thai before learning to talk. A baby does not learn to read and write before learning to talk. Talk first, read later. This program is just what I need to understand the grammer and tones in the Thai language. With this program and my Thai wife's help, I will be well on my way to speaking Thai. The 30 minute lessons are just right. Enough time to review and learn but not so much as to become lost or bored.

Comments about Thai Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I have covered the course 7 times. I think I know the material well. I have tried other methods but soon the process run short of steam, no progress was possible. This method however, feeds on itself and grows, picking up strength as it goes along. It is a masterfully designed approach. Same experience with German. Now what is needed are more courses in order to cover more aspects of life. So more courses please.
It may appear an overly enthusiastic review but it isn't. It is my sincere opinion.

Comments about Thai Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I have traveled to Thailand 4 times on business. Between the 3rd and 4th trip I studied and learned Pimsleur Thai Phase 1. My new language skills prove to be invaluable, although Thai people did laugh at my accent. I am conversational in Spanish and French thanks to PImsleur and I am looking forward to the same in Thai.
