Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet

Tagalog is the most widely spoken of the over one hundred seventy languages in the Philippines. It is claimed by over 21 million people as their first language and an estimated 50 million Filipinos speak it in varying degrees of proficiency. It is the lingua franca in the Philippines and in oveseas Filipino communities. Tagalog is one of the two official languages (English is the other) and is the base of the national language of the Philippines.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Tagalog Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included starting at the end of Unit 11 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Tagalog alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Tagalog Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Using the Pimsleur method, I found Tagalog easy to learn and my pronunciation was correct and Filipinos understood easily what I was saying. I went to the Philippines and the language I learned through Pimsleur was very helpful. Filipinos were very happy to hear I knew Tagalog. I gave a speech, partly in Tagalog, to 300 Filipinos and received cheers every time I said something in Tagalog. The Pimsleur method works!

          Service and delivery comments:

Service was great. I had a little trouble with my computer and customer service was friendly and helpful and stepped me through it perfectly.

Comments about Tagalog Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I spend 2 hours each day commuting to/from work, so I used it during that time. I've finished all 30 lessons, now I just keep repeating them. It's great, but 1 level is not enough. 4 would be much better. When will Pimsleur release some more Tagalog levels?

For me, having the material almost entirely audio is a benefit, not a drawback (since I can use it while commuting, walking, jogging). If I want written material, I can supplement with other products, but the audio-only fits into my schedule much better.
