Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet

Tagalog is the most widely spoken of the over one hundred seventy languages in the Philippines. It is claimed by over 21 million people as their first language and an estimated 50 million Filipinos speak it in varying degrees of proficiency. It is the lingua franca in the Philippines and in oveseas Filipino communities. Tagalog is one of the two official languages (English is the other) and is the base of the national language of the Philippines.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Tagalog, Comprehensive includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included starting at the end of Unit 11 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Tagalog alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Tagalog Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I spend 2 hours each day commuting to/from work, so I used it during that time. I've finished all 30 lessons, now I just keep repeating them. It's great, but 1 level is not enough. 4 would be much better. When will Pimsleur release some more Tagalog levels?

For me, having the material almost entirely audio is a benefit, not a drawback (since I can use it while commuting, walking, jogging). If I want written material, I can supplement with other products, but the audio-only fits into my schedule much better.

Comments about Tagalog Phase 1, Units 1-30:

This gave me a great head start on basic Tagalog prior to my trip to the Philippines. The locals were impressed to hear an American speak some Tagalog words. The only problem is that the course stops at 30 lessons and only gives you the basics. Please add more advanced lessons, I will definitly buy because the teaching concept works!

      Service and delivery comments:

This approach to learning a new language really works! I am 43 years old and was able to pick up basic Tagalog with no problem. Please add more advanced lessons!

      Comments about Tagalog, Comprehensive:

Comparing Pimsleur's Tagalog lessons to their Brazilian Portuguese lessons, I find that the Tagalog lessons proceed at a quicker pace, and I frequently have to repeat lessons the next day. Sometimes i do a lesson twice in the same day before proceeding to the next lesson the next day. Also, a lot of the spoken tagalog is too quick to follow, especially the example conversations at the start of the lessons. (I understand that Filipinos do speak the language pretty fast but that's not useful while learning.) Also, frequently, the time gap given to me to formulate the tagalog sentence/answer is too short before the narrator provides the answer himself.

That said, I love the Pimsleur method - the way vocabulary is revised at paced intervals - and would certainly recommend the course. It has given me the perfect start I needed, albeit with more effort than I expected.
