The Swiss federation is composed of 23 cantons. About 65% of the Swiss population speak Swiss German and it is spoken in 11 out of the 23 cantons. Pimsleur's Swiss German uses speakers with urban intonation and pronunciation spoken in cities such as St. Gallen, ZŸrich, and Basel.

Swiss German Phase 1, Units 1-10 provide an introduction to Swiss German with 10 thirty-minute lessons. With this product you start from zero, learning first survival phrases and vocabulary, then progressing to speaking and understanding at a functional level. Every lesson contains an introductory conversation, and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced.  Emphasis on pronunciation and comprehension.  At the completion of this course, you’ll have a basic vocabulary and speak with a near-native accent. This course provides you with a solid foundation upon which to expand your language skills. Culture Notes are provided to give you further insight into Swiss German language and culture. A Notes booklet is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Swiss German Phase 1, Units 1-10:

I really enjoyed this course. I had been trying to find a course for Swiss German since I still talk with relatives in Switzerland. A coworker told me about Pimsleur Swiss German and I bought it immediately. The last time I talked to relatives in Switzerland I was only on lesson four but they were surprised when I was able to speak a little Swiss. I hope there will be more lessons available soon. I continue to listen to the first ten lessons to review and improve my speaking skills.

Comments about Swiss German Phase 1, Units 1-10:

Purchased the Swiss German lesson because my boyfriend and his family are from Switzerland. He speaks English fluently but his family is limited on their English. So wanted to learn some words/phrases in order to be better included in the conversations with them.

    Service and delivery comments:

I really enjoyed the lessons but wish that I had purchased the German Comprehensive ones instead. Mainly because the Swiss German lessons are only 10 and the German lessons are vast and numerous. Also, because most Swiss people can understand German as well. Enjoyed the lessons but German would have better to purchase than the Swiss German. Could have spent that money on other lessons instead. Oh well.

I'm understanding why my classroom German doesn't help me in Switzerland.

Comments about Swiss German Phase 1, Units 1-10:

I listen to the lessons in the car on trips and on my iPod at home. It is well organized and clear. It is progressive and I feel confident as it loves on and reviews at the same time. I just love it and look forward to working with it. My only complaint is that there is no Phase 2 or 3. There need to be more!

Comments about Swiss German Phase 1, Units 1-10:

I moved to Switzerland to begin a new job with a Swiss company. I spent a LOT of time looking for some way to learn Swiss German. There are a smattering of websites and online videos about the language, but nothing that is as structured, useful, and effective. I had previously used the German program, but that language and Swiss German have almost nothing in common. As I'm now actually living in Switzerland, people have been impressed that I've tried to learn their language rather than only speaking traditional German.
