About Swedish

  • Swedish is an Indo-European language that belongs to the North Germanic branch of the Germanic languages, all of which derive from Old Norse.
  • This course teaches rikssvenska (sometimes referred to as Standard Swedish) as spoken in and around the capital region of Stockholm.
  • Swedish is spoken by approximately 10 million people, mostly in Sweden and parts of Finland.
  • Norwegian and Swedish are considered mutually intelligible, with Danish also being very similar.
  • The Swedish alphabet uses the 26 Latin letters, plus three additional: Å / å, Ä / ä, and Ö / ö.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Swedish, Comprehensive includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons. This course replaces our original Compact Swedish with new and expanded vocabulary, scenarios, grammar and structures.
  •  In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included starting at the end of Unit 11 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Swedish alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

I bought this comprehensive Swedish set because I want to continue to improve my Swedish. I have family in Sweden and learned a little Swedish as a kid. As an adult, I've taught myself through books, tapes and computer programs and consider myself somewhat conversational, but limited to certain subjects. This method is BY FAR the best way for me to learn a language. I use it when I am driving in my car. I can tell that my brain is making connections and I am able to create new sentences when prompted to think about how I would say something that the lesson has not yet gone over. The constant review of vocabulary is so valuable. Even in unit #1 I learned a few words that I did not know. My grammar is also improving. I also like that when you learn words, you understand exactly what you are saying. Some programs have you memorize a sentence without really knowing what it exactly translates into. That's just memorizing. Pimsleur is understanding and making the right connections. I find that with using it in the car, I am more motivated rather than getting on the computer to learn. I work on a computer during the day for work. What's not so great? The only thing for me is I wish it moved a bit faster, but I truly believe that the pace the lessons go at are due to how the brain learns best. This product is perfect for beginners too. I'm anxious to let my family members learn from it too. I plan to learn other languages with this method as well. I've already started with the first eight lessons of Japanese.

I bought this after my excellent experience with the Farsi Pimsleur course. I have gone through half of the lessons and am not as happy with it as I was with the Farsi course.

There is a lack of enunciation in the later courses which makes it very difficult to understand what the teachers are saying. I understand that the Swedish language is very fast paced, but I think it would be better to spend some time on enunciation for us beginners.

If I did not have someone I know that speaks Swedish, whom I use to check my pronunciation, I would call this course very ineffective as that person has said repeatedly that my pronunciation is off.

Comments about Swedish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Love the teaching technic. It starts you off learning the words before you have to tackle the strange spellings and sounds they make. Anxious to see if I can understand some of what my Swedish friends are saying the next time I visit. I do wish they I had more than 30 lessons. I'm just beginning and would like to advance my learning through this method. Great to listen to when driving and when going to sleep.

Comments about Swedish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I've done 20 lessons so far, and I've gained an incedible ability to converse and try to understand written Swedish. This approach is 100x more fun & interesting than you ordinary language course with it's stilted conversations, lists of words to learn and immediate stumbling over genders/spelling/conjugation. Speak from the very beginning, gain a foothold and enjoy the feeling of success, then you can fill in the details as you go forward. Disadvantage => we need a unit 2 and a unit 3. ASAP! And yes, it would be nice to have some things said first with unnatural slowness.

Comments about Swedish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

My grandpa speaks Swedish, so I finally decided to take the plunge and learn it so we could converse for fun. After researching different programs I opted for Pimsleur, and I am so happy that I did! I use the Swedish iPhone application while I am commuting to work each morning and it is absolutely wonderful! I feel like I am finally utilizing my commute time wisely. The Pimsleur application works perfectly, and I can Bluetooth the lesson directly into the speakers of my car. Each lesson is a maximum of 30 minutes long, which is the perfect length of time for my brain to take in. At about 27 minutes I seem to start loosing my focus, and most lessons are 26-29 minutes long.

before purchasing I was a bit concerned about the use of the application, and if it would work well or not. The app is very simple to use, and very practical. I have not encountered any bugs with it yet. I simply open the app, select my lesson for that day, and play it. That's it!

The approach for these lessons is very clear and simple:
1) Do only 1 lesson per day. You can do a lesson multiple times in one day, but only do 1 maximum.
2) Speak out loud to yourself in a normal speaking voice (even if other drivers might think you're crazy, maybe they should try it too!)
3) Follow the Pimsleur course outline exactly. AKA don't read on your own, or try new methods. This could confuse you and hinder your learning.

I learned Spanish in the typical classroom setting in the past, and I have to say that I think I'm getting much more out of this method, than I ever did that!

I don't have a bad thing to say about this program. I take several lessons back to my Grandpa, who lived in Sweden for a few years, and he thinks they sound excellent! I can't wait to travel to Sweden and put my new skills to use!

Comments about Swedish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I listened to a lesson/day while i walked my dog. Like most people, I work and have little time. It was great to double task. I've tried other language learning methods that make me sit down - and I cannot keep up the daily thing that is so important to learning a language. Also the way Pimsleur introduces language with how you would use it normally. so it worked of rme.
I would have liked to have new words that were introduced in the latter lessons broken down by syllable as new words were in the earlier lessons. i had a little difficulty hearing the words spoken quickly.
