What You’ll Learn
Builds upon skills taught in Pimsleur’s Spanish Level 1.

In the first 10 lessons you’ll begin using the past tense. Structures become more complex and informal speech is introduced. Soon you’ll take part in conversations about ordering meals, shopping, and local tourist attractions. As you progress, your fluency will increase as your vocabulary expands.

The next 10 lessons will allow you to further combine and build upon known elements, and produce longer and more complex sentences. You’ll be discussing business and social activities, expressing your interests, and talking about the weather.

In the final 10 lessons you’ll double your vocabulary and have several hundred structures to draw upon. You’ll learn to express yourself with relative structures – faster, slower, etc. You’ll be able to ask for assistance in many situations and to ask for directions to various locations. You’ll explore sports and leisure activities, manage changing money and banking, and discuss travel plans. By the end of the program, you’ll be speaking at a mid-intermediate level with near-native pronunciation, and you’ll be comfortable meeting most social demands and limited job requirements.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to give you practice reading Spanish, and to provide you with some insight into Spanish culture with proverbs, common expressions, and a broad look at things you’ll experience when visiting a Spanish-speaking country.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Spanish Language
Spanish is the official language of 19 Latin American nations, as well as Spain, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba. Further, it’s one of the six official languages recognized by the United Nations. Pimsleur's Spanish programs teach an educated Latin American Spanish, featuring speakers from Colombia and Mexico. Students can expect to understand the lessons clearly and to be understood by Spanish speakers everywhere.

I've now used Pimsleur for French (Level 1-4), Japanese (1), Italian (1), and Spanish (1-2, so far). I find it very entertaining, and you will learn much faster than from a textbook or a college class. Textbooks and classes are very useful adjuncts to Pimsleur, though.

So, what's great about the program? You will keep hearing the language, over and over, that's what! New ideas, concepts and words are introduced in each lesson, with reinforcement of what was learned in previous lessons.

Anyone who has studied languages will tell you that speaking is the secondary challenge. The primary challenge is listening and understanding. The right way to do it is to listen to a lesson everyday. It may take you 3-4 days to feel comfortable with a lesson before you are ready to move to the next one. You don't have to be perfect with a lesson before moving on. In fact, I would advise against it. New words and ideas will repeated and reinforced in subsequent lessons. Occasionally I will skip back 5 lessons or so and discover that what I thought was difficult or challenging has become very simple. That shows that it works.

I often hear people complain about the lack of a translation with the Pimsleur recordings. I did too, at first. I have come to realize that reading the material will make you think you understand it BEFORE you really do. When you are using only your ears, your brain has to work a little harder, but it makes you a better LISTENER, and as I said earlier, that is the primary challenge.

That said, it is sometimes useful to see how a word is spelled, particularly when you are having trouble understanding from the recorder. Go to Google Translate, and write in the English phrase and 9 times out of 10 you will see the translated word you want.

Will Pimsleur make you fluent? Not by itself. But if you get through Level 3 and spend time with other resources -- a grammar textbook and talking with native speakers -- you will at the very least become quite comfortable with your new language. You might even start dreaming in your new language! WILD!!!

Did it meet my expectations? I found the lessons reasonably easy to follow in sequence, although I often stopped and backed up to clarify something in my mind. Each lesson always took me more than 30 minutes; I didn't mind because the course would be of less value if I did not try to make sure of understanding each point of grammar or vocabulary. I was able to pick up quite a number of useful 'general' expressions which I have since found useful in both listening and speaking Spanish.
Would I recommend you to a friend? Well, that would depend on the friend and what that friend wanted out of the course. If the friend were in the top 10% of the population in income, intelligent, well educated, employed and with lots of time to waste/spend on non-essentials (I could go on for quite a while, but you get the idea), I would definitely recommend the program. BUT if the friend wanted to learn Spanish in order to communicate with the other 90% of the people and serve them, love them, understand them and their hopes, fears, culture, grinding poverty and the reasons therefor, who is willing to sacrifice to help these lower 90% and not expect income deductions in return, who knows what it is like to walk along a very dusty road in dry season and how much cleaning up afterwards is necessary to satisfy the average North American, who realizes what the word "barrio" really means rather than just the dictionary definition of "a neighbourhood where Spanish is spoken (again I could go on for a while), I would tell the friend, "There are some really good things about this course, but a lot of the vocabulary is aimed at people who don't speak the same 'language' that they do in the barrio. If words such as vacaciones, golf, tennis, hotels, aviones, pasajes, regalos, reuniones, excursiones, discursos, profesores, universidades, ingenieros, clientes, etc. are not part of your everyday vocabulary, I would suggest that you look around a bit and see what other options you can find."

Comments about Pimsleur Spanish Level 2 MP3:

I listen to the Pimsleur Spanish Language course when in the car and sometimes at home when time allows.
I find it good but it lacks some needed support. Specifically it should have written material to make it more understandable and a dictionary.

I looked at a number of different online and self-taught courses before settling on the Pimsleur courses. I could not have made a better choice.
