About Castilian Spanish

  • In the United States, the term “Castilian” or “Castilian Spanish” usually refers to the dialect that is the official language of Spain, where it’s used in television and radio broadcasts.  It is understood throughout the country, although there are marked regional differences.
  • The difference between Castilian Spanish as spoken in Spain and Spanish as spoken in the Americas (now called Latin American Spanish) is due to the diminishing contact between Spain and the Americas over the centuries and to the influence of local languages in the Americas.  These two main variants of Spanish are mutually intelligible; the difference between them is comparable to that between British English and American English.
  • Pimsleur’s “Castilian Spanish” teaches the official dialect as spoken by the majority of Spanish-speakers in Spain.
  • Spanish is the official language of twenty-one countries and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.   Spanish is the first language of more than 350 million people, more than any other language except Mandarin Chinese.
  • Furthermore, Spanish is a common second language --- the most studied after English, and the third most commonly used on the Internet after English and Mandarin.

Comments about Castilian Spanish Phase 1, Unit 16-20:

The thing that stands out most in the Pimsleur method, in my opinion, is that it is one of the few audio products that provides not only listen-and-repeat drills, but also requires the user to respond to questions in the language he or she is studying. This is important because the student gets familiar with the way the language feels coming from his mouth and vocal chords. By the end of the first course, the user can produce several typical Spanish conversation expressions without having to pause or think. It also helps with correct pronunciation. All-in-all, if you want to speak and understand spoken Spanish, rather than just read it, this is a good choice.

Comments about Castilian Spanish Phase 1, Unit 16-20:

Love the system but was disappointed in the "booklet". I received a list of Spanish words I could transalate but did not find the correct answers listed. With some of the words or phases, I did not want to memorize because I wasn't sure my answer was exactly correct. Otherwise, learning the language has been more effective than classes in high school and college despite making good grades. Also, I have been able to try it out with a Spanish speaking friend. She said I was doing well except for my Texas accent. Well, I have that in English also.

Comments about Castilian Spanish Phase 1, Unit 16-20:

The Company's approach only partially works for me. I listen to it in my car and when I walk. But I need written materials so I can understand what I am hearing and also to have explanations of grammar. Audio alone is not enough, but the Pimsluer audio method is the most effective audio approach I have found. The downloads and app are a terrible disappointment and iTunes downloads would have been much better. I play my iPhone via my car's audio system and the app cannot be played that way. I did not realize this when I purchased the downloads. The CD's will work but they are much more expensive.

Comments about Castilian Spanish Phase 1, Unit 16-20:

I have tried alot of foreign language instruction online/cd etc. Pimsleur is the best IMO. The lessons are clear and easy to follow and not as boring as the others. Also I think the order of how they introduce new vocab and grammar concepts works really well. The only downside is that the Castilian Spanish ends at level 30, but South American spanish is close enough that you can continue with those and you will already have the castilian dialect down pretty well by then.

Comments about Castilian Spanish Phase 1, Unit 16-20:

As a guide for pronunciation, the Pimsleur system is very good. But they seem to be afraid of the written word. Pimsleur believes that the written word contaminates pronunciation. This may be true initially, but after, say, twelve lessons or so we should see the words that we are speaking. The "reading lesson" component is weak. We need to know what the words mean. Why do they keep us in the dark. How about including new words and phrases from the current CD lesson and explaining what they mean, and what the grammatical significance is. Also the Spanish speakers are just a little bit too fast.
