The Easiest and Fastest Way to Learn Russian
Whether you want to travel, communicate with friends or colleagues, reconnect with family, or just understand more of what’s going on in the world around you, learning Russian will expand your horizons and immeasurably enrich your life.

The best part is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or take years to master. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes, and we get you speaking right from the first day. Pimsleur courses use a scientifically-proven method that puts you in control of your learning. If you’ve tried other language learning methods but found they simply didn’t stick, then you owe it to yourself to give Pimsleur a try.

- In total, 48 hours of audio, all featuring native speakers
- a Reading Booklet for each level and a User’s Guide

What You’ll Learn
This program includes all of Russian Levels 1, 2, and 3. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a high-intermediate level of speaking and understanding Russian.

Every lesson contains an introductory conversation and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced. Emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension. By the end of the program, you’ll have gained experience participating in many informal and some formal discussions on practical, social, and semiprofessional topics. You’ll skillfully form longer, more complex sentences, and most importantly, you’ll find yourself being understood, even by native speakers unused to dealing with foreigners.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30 for each Level. These lessons, which total about three hours, are designed to give you practice sounding out Russian and then to help you progress to reading for meaning. They also provide extensive additional vocabulary. Before you know it, you’ll be reading Russian with the ease and flexibility of a native speaker.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Russian Language
Russian, one of the six official languages of the United Nations, is the official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Krygystan, with an estimated 150 million native speakers around the world. Pimsleur's Russian uses speakers from Moscow and St. Petersburg, which accounts for slight pronunciation differences between speakers, but accurately depicts contemporary spoken Russian.

In my opinion Pimsleur is one of the most effective methods for learning a language there is, which is why it is such a shame that you guys just barely miss what I consider could be the PERFECT product.

I consider myself a visual learner, I don't listen to anything particularly well and remember it later. This is just the way I have been my entire life. So I tried softwares, I tried books, etc. and none of it really clicked. Then I tried Pimsleur Basic during my morning and afternoon commute and within a week I could actually remember useful words and phrases. I was perplexed, amazed, fascinated - you name it! Within that first week I purchased the entire program of this language.

I decided Pimsleur would be a better use of my drive time than audiobooks or music. Instead of just wasting the time, I actually get something out of the whole process of sitting in my car an hour every day.

But unfortunately, the product is incomplete. I can learn to speak it all day, but if I can't read it then I have only half the skill level. In addition, although the program itself has felt long, the amount of words I am actually learning is somewhat limited (I think it has been counted at about 500?). The last detractor is that there's virtually no explanation. While I'd like to believe I can learn as a child does, my brain is fundamentally different - I need some explanation and a supplementary book discussing each unit in detail would have been extraordinarily helpful.

You'll enjoy the course, but prepare to be disappointed when it suddenly ends when you feel you're at the halfway point. The Russian course has only three levels, unlike some other courses (e.g., French has five levels). I was very disappointed at how it just abruptly ended right when I felt I was starting to get conversational. Russian is a major world language and I don't see why Pimsleur doesn't have Russian lessons to an advanced level. If I'd known that it wasn't going to start feeling intense until the third level I wouldn't have bought the course; I probably would have just checked it out from a public library. By the way, I'd say Pimsleur courses aren't for beginners but for students with a basic knowledge of the language's reading, writing, and grammar. I wish Pimsleur had advanced levels of Russian and also specialized conversational topics like legal and business Russian. That would be great.

Comments about Pimsleur Russian Levels 1-3 MP3:

Overall, the course is excellent. Pay attention, follow along, and try your best to remember, and the language fills in. Russian uses a different "sound palette" than English and languages that are close to it. I found it helpful to try to mimic the sounds closely. Native speakers have told me that I have good pronunciation, however I still have enough of an accent to make it clear that I am not a native speaker. I was not able to go through the lessons exactly as suggested, one new one a day. I found it most helpful to do a new lesson in the morning, review the two previous lessons during the day, and then do the new lesson again in the evening. This allowed me to keep to the lesson-a-day pace, though I needed to spend more time.

Comments about Pimsleur Russian Levels 1-3 MP3:

I find the pimsluer method the easiest way to learn a language. Here's why! I can do a lesson a day without taking any extra time.. I do the lesson on my way to and from work. so instead of listing to music or talk radio I do my lesson.. so even a busy person has no excuse. One thing a person must do if they want to become much more fluent is use another sourse to complement the pimsluer.. like talking with native speaker or doing writting and reading in a work book.. the more time you spend in the language the more u will get out..

Comments about Pimsleur Russian Levels 1-3 MP3:

I use the program daily and I'm learning Russian!
The rate of introducing new words / phrases seems about right and the frequency and spacing of repetition seem very good.
The speakers and pronunciation of the words are excellent -I can hear / understand the sounds of the words!
However, the audio volume (on iPad) is lower than all other audio content I have downloaded, and I usually have to listen at max volume.
The progression of complexity and progression of speaking topics seems good.
The response time of the "play" / "pause" buttons on my iPad (iPad 3) is a bit slow.
The Bookmarks is also an excellent tool for marking where new words are introduced.
The written materials, e.g. the book by Dr. Pimsleur, are excellent! They give very good insights to learning language and are fun to read!
