The best part is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or take years to master. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes, and we get you speaking right from the first day. What You’ll Learn
This program includes all of Russian Levels 1, 2, and 3. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a high-intermediate level of speaking and understanding Russian.

Every lesson contains an introductory conversation and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced. Emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension. By the end of the program, you’ll have gained experience participating in many informal and some formal discussions on practical, social, and semiprofessional topics. You’ll skillfully form longer, more complex sentences, and most importantly, you’ll find yourself being understood, even by native speakers unused to dealing with foreigners.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30 for each Level. These lessons, which total about three hours, are designed to give you practice sounding out Russian and then to help you progress to reading for meaning. They also provide extensive additional vocabulary. Before you know it, you’ll be reading Russian with the ease and flexibility of a native speaker.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Russian Language
Russian, one of the six official languages of the United Nations, is the official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Krygystan, with an estimated 150 million native speakers around the world. Pimsleur's Russian uses speakers from Moscow and St. Petersburg, which accounts for slight pronunciation differences between speakers, but accurately depicts contemporary spoken Russian.

    Comments about Russian Phases 1-3:

I've had Russian 1-3 since 2006. I'm working through it for the 3rd time now. Second time was about 3 years ago, and it's all coming back to me very fast. I'll say my retention is north of 75%, 3 years after having completed it last and with no daily use of Russian. The first time through I did it while sitting at a desk, one lesson per day giving it my full attention. Now I'm able to listen in the car (iPhone-bluetooth link beats the pants off of the old bookchips which, btw, Pimsleur was nice enough to exchange for me when my chip player, long since obsolete, broke).
What does the Pimsleur course do? It gives you some degree of fluency with a relatively small vocabulary. It forces not just words but phrases into your active, as opposed to passive, vocabulary. It makes you learn sentence structure without ever directly teaching sentence structure. That strong intuition of sentence structure will serve you well as you continue your language learning through immersion, class work, or other software.

What doesn't it do? It doesn't give you a huge vocabulary to enable conversation on a wide variety of subjects. It doesn't give you a visual link between objects and words. I also have the software that does that. Given a choice of the two, I'd say go with Pimsleur.

If you're serious about learning Russian, complete all of Pimsleur Russian 1-3 first. After that, use the other, image-heavy method to increase your vocabulary. The cost of both methods combined is comparable to the cost of one semester of college language study, with many times the benefit.

    Good luck!

      Comments about Russian Phases 1-3:

I have completed 10 lessons so far and I'm happy with the progress I've made, and my purchase of the Pimsleur Russian courses. The learning is presented in a logical and organized manner. Many useful conversational sentences, phrases, and questions are given up front. And you build on each new piece learned. The spaced repetition does really help to move the information into long-term memory. But the material needs to be reviewed daily, or at least without missing more than a day or two here and there. The native speakers are great and they break down the pronunciation of the words clearly. Of course, it always helps to have a dictionary or other study materials to supplement if you are interested in reading and writing as well. I only wish there was a transcription of the audio lessons. There are some supplemental reading lessons included that are useful and overlap a bit. The best thing about this method is developing your ear for the language. You need to hear conversation regularly and practice the voicing of words. And this is all done while learning useful language structures, not just vocabulary. Learning a new language takes a great deal of time so you need to be sure that the instructional method you select is effective, and in my opinion this one really is.

        Comments about Russian I-III:

Use to and from work. Works great. The only thing I have a problem with is the native speakers have a tendency to lower their volume at times and it becomes a little difficult to catch the full pronunciation.

        Comments about Russian Phases 1-3:

I'm giving it 4 stars only because it doesn't help with the writing (has to be suplemented in that area) and because they only have levels I-III. Other than that, it would have been 5 stars.

The main thing with Pimsleur is that it helps you with the accent and the conversational aspect. For a language like Russian, the pace is just fine. The main thing about this program is the quality of the audio: Russian has sounds that for English speakers are almost inaudible. The audio is crisp and clear. And the app makes it is very portable. Worth the money.
