What You’ll Learn
This Russian program includes all of Pimsleur’s Russian Levels 1 & 2. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a mid-intermediate level of speaking, understanding, and reading Russian.
Every lesson contains an introductory conversation, and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced. Emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension. At the completion of this course, you’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future; you’ll speak confidently using your wide-ranging vocabulary, and experience the Russian language and culture with a deepening insight.
Reading Lessons are included to provide you with an introduction to reading Russian. These lessons, which total about one hour for each level, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent.
The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:
The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.
Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.
Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.
The Russian Language
Russian, one of the six official languages of the United Nations, is the official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Krygystan, with an estimated 150 million native speakers around the world. Pimsleur's Russian uses speakers from Moscow and St. Petersburg, which accounts for slight pronunciation differences between speakers, but accurately depicts contemporary spoken Russian.

Comments about Pimsleur Russian Levels 1-2 MP3:
I am interested in learning Russian so I can communicate with my son's in-laws. I became frustrated with a widely advertised language learning product because it forced me to sit at my computer 100% of my language learning time -- there was no option for multitasking my language learning with mundane household chores. In addition, the words and phrases learned in the first part of the program were not immediately useful -- for example, I doubt early interactions with the in-laws will include the topic of "swimming".
I learned about Pimsleur while searching for resources related to "conversational Russion" in the catalog of my town library. I borrowed the CD set for 2 weeks and was hooked. I subsequently purchased units 1 and 2, and have completed through lesson 16 of unit 1. My son and daughter-in-law are amazed at how quickly I have been able to learn the vocabulary and construct sentences.
I don't expect to learn everything included in a lesson during the first 1/2 hour. I typically repeat the lesson several times before I feel I have attained the 80% success rate and move onto the next.
Areas for improvement? At times I feel the native speakers go a bit too quickly for me to catch all the nuances of pronunciation. For example, I can not always distinguish between the "v" and "b" sound. Since looking at the written word is discouraged, I have questioned my daughter-in-law for the correct sound. Occasionally the English-speaking narrator describes the sound (e.g., "that word starts with the sound of 'zd'"). I think this should be done more often.
I have already recommended the Pimsleur method to several friends who are preparing for foreign travel and would like to have a working knowledge of the language used at their destination.
