About the Punjabi Language

  • Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language of the Indo-European language family.  It is unique for being the only tonal language in this family.
  • There are ten Punjabi dialects which are mostly mutually intelligible.  This course teaches the Eastern Punjabi dialect as spoken in India.
  • Punjabi is spoken by approximately 110-112 million people world-wide.
  • It is an official language in the Indian states of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, and is also spoken elsewhere in northwestern India.  Although not considered an offical language in Pakistan, it is spoken by the majority in the Pakistani province of Punjab.
  • It is also spoken by expatriate communities in Bangladesh, Canada, Fiji, Kenya, Libya, Malaysia (Peninsular), Mauritius, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the United States.  In Canada, Punjabi is thought to be the sixth most frequently spoken language.
  • Punjabi is most commonly written using the Gurmukhi script.  The reading lessons in this course teach how to read the Gurmukhi alphabet.

Comments about Punjabi Phase 1, Unit 01-05:

I really enjoyed learning Punjabi with Pimsleur. The way in which the language is introduced incrementally is very helpful. Rather than trying to learn new words and grammar, the language seeps into your mind as your practice. Before you know it, you can start to predict how to say new things based on experience.

    Service and delivery comments:

The audio lessons note that Punjabi is a tonal language and try to point out when to change tone. I have a difficult time hearing what they're describing, perhaps more examples would be helpful. Perhaps you can find an example where changing tone changes the meaning of a word - that would be more concrete

Comments about Punjabi Phase 1, Unit 01-05:

I've done other Pimsleur programs before, so I knew what to expect. The first 5 lessons here teach the usual basics: greetings, saying you're American/Panjabi, asking if someone speaks English/Panjabi, etc. Lesson 4 and 5 gets a little more complicated by teaching you how to ask for directions, say you want something to eat and drink, etc.

I use this product daily in the car while I am driving to and from work. I can usually move onto the next lesson after spending one or two days on each lesson. I have been studying Panjabi independently through other sources (mostly practicing reading by studying the Gurmukhi script) and I find Pimsleur to be indispensable to learning the sounds of the language better. I can pretty much tell how the words should be spelled in Gurmukhti when listening to the native speakers in the program, and this has really helped me learn to pronounce some of the letters/sounds which we do not have in English.

I listen the program on my long drives and it works great! I can't wait to buy the next 5 units. It's helping me a lot when talking to my punjabi speaking friend. It works better than I thought it would and I am remembering it! I usually can't remember anything.

Comments about Punjabi Phase 1, Unit 01-05:

I use the product during my commutes. I'm in the car alone that way it doesn't scare anyone if I randomly bust out my punjabi skills. The first thing I noticed is how similar it is to all other pimsleur languages, same format helps a listener understand what to expect next. Secondly, the native speakers are truly have an authentic accent. It get's really fast as all the other pimsleaur languages and there is never a dull or boring moment, very engaging. There really aren't any "not so great" things about this product. I've tried this and rosetta and feel this is waaaay more of an efficient way of learning things. Plus, it's not a visual experience, which i feel can distract a learner at times. Just wonderful. Thanks Pimsleur!! Please bring on the updates for Punjabi vocab with the reading bits!
