Description

Includes 10 lessons and reading instruction on 5 CDs, plus a reading booklet

Portuguese is the mother tongue of about 170 million people, mainly in Portugal and the Portuguese islands in the Atlantic, Brazil, and Portugal's former overseas provinces in Africa and Asia. Pimsleur's European Portuguese teaches the Lisbon dialect of European Portuguese.

European Portuguese Phase 1, Units 1-10 provide an introduction to European Portuguese with 10 thirty-minute lessons . With this product you start from zero, learning first survival phrases and vocabulary, then progressing to speaking and understanding at a functional level. Every lesson contains an introductory conversation, and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced.  Emphasis on pronunciation and comprehension.  At the completion of this course, you’ll have a basic vocabulary and speak with a near-native accent. This course provides you with a solid foundation upon which to expand your language skills. Reading Lessons begin in Unit 2 and provide you with an introduction to reading Portuguese. These lessons are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. In addition, combined Reading Lessons from all the units are included at the end. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Pimsleur® equals success. Just one 30-minute lesson a day gets you speaking and understanding like no other program.

I am planning to retire to southern Portugal in a year or so, and all I could find were language lessons in Brazilian Portuguese. I was delighted to find your program. It teaches without being preachy, and by the end of the 3rd session, I was actually feeling as though I was making really good progress.

I bought the 10 lesson version and practiced the program extensively for 3 months. Listening and repeating the phrases allowed me to develop excellent pronunciation. However, the phrases that I learned were very limited. I would have preferred more phrases that were useful in travel. When I got to Portugal, I started out every encounter with "excuse me, sir or madam, I speak a little portuguese, not very well." and with that almost every single person would reply back to me in Portuguese, "No you speak very well." which leads me to believe that listening and repeating this phrase multiple times made it perfect, so much that they thought I could really speak Portuguese, however, I knew little else. I could get two beers and the bathroom. However, sometimes when I asked where something was I could not understand the answer, because I only knew if they said it was here or there, if it was down the street and near something or this or that, I had no idea what they were saying, but again my accent was so good that they clearly figured I must speak Portuguese pretty well.

Comments about Port (Euro) Phase 1, Units 1-10:

I have experience in learning other languages and found this program to be very good. I especially like the timing of less than 30 minutes a day and only one lesson a day. I did the 10 lessons and feel confident about my upcoming trip to Portugal. The only thing is that I would like to continue learning the language but could not find any additional lessons for this program.

Comments about Port (Euro) Phase 1, Units 1-10:

Great experience - retaining info! Sometimes it may seem a bit repetitive & get a bit boring BUT that is what helps you retain the information. I am very pleased with my progression in a short period of time. I am anxious for the next 30 lessons to come out in October.

Comments about Port (Euro) Phase 1, Units 1-10:

I love this product. The pacing was great, and I loved that it was mostly based on listening/hearing, rather than reading and writing. But it only just whet my appetite. 10 lessons is like nothing.

        Service and delivery comments:

Have more lessons! At least 90, preferably more. There is no excuse for not offering more material.

I've used Pimsleur before and knew what to expect. This is a wonderful product for learning a language during a commute. I feel like I do learn using this.

However, a HUGE drawback to starting with the European Portuguese is that Pimsleur only has lessons 1-10. I'm going to have to switch companies and probably start all over again. I wish I had realized this from the start.

            Comments about Portuguese (European), Compact:

Pros: Dives right in, focuses on useful phrases for travelers, gives a bit of insight.

Cons: two speakers use different pronunciation (perhaps by design?) so it's difficult to determine whether to say um poc' or um poco, only ten lessons means I may be able to say please and thank you but it's highly unlikely I'll be able to hold even a short conversation.

I certainly do not regret my purchase, and the price was fine, but I'm not sure how useful ten short lessons will be once I'm in Portugal. There doesn't appear to be another level of European Portuguese offered, or I'd buy it!

This is my third lesson with Pimsleur. I used every word of the Italian while I was in that country, and the lessons from Pimsleur paved the way for me to communicate, and learn even more while I was there. I was disappointed in the Spanish lessons, as there was no mention of them being Mexican (I was going to Spain) and all the talk of pesos and the yodeling female (pronouncing si in four syllables, si-EE-ee-i) drove me bonkers. If I were to speak like her while in Spain, or even in Mexico, I could not help but insult anyone listening, as it sounded like a cartoon parody. I was embarrassed just listening to it. I would have appreciated learning the way to pronounce 'euro' as a Spaniard would. That said, it is still a better program than any other I have found – and I have investigated several. Pimsleur rocks the language lesson world.

I will certainly be monitoring the Pimsleur website, in hopes of finding Portuguese, level two, before my trip next year. I am a devotee!
