Description

Includes 10 lessons and reading instruction (5 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet

Portuguese is the mother tongue of about 170 million people, mainly in Portugal and the Portuguese islands in the Atlantic, Brazil, and Portugal's former overseas provinces in Africa and Asia. Pimsleur's European Portuguese teaches the Lisbon dialect of European Portuguese.

European Portuguese Phase 1, Units 1-10 provide an introduction to European Portuguese with 10 thirty-minute lessons . With this product you start from zero, learning first survival phrases and vocabulary, then progressing to speaking and understanding at a functional level. Every lesson contains an introductory conversation, and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced.  Emphasis on pronunciation and comprehension.  At the completion of this course, you’ll have a basic vocabulary and speak with a near-native accent. This course provides you with a solid foundation upon which to expand your language skills. Reading Lessons begin in Unit 2 and provide you with an introduction to reading Portuguese. These lessons are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. In addition, combined Reading Lessons from all the units are included at the end. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Pimsleur® equals success. Just one 30-minute lesson a day gets you speaking and understanding like no other program.

I am planning to retire to southern Portugal in a year or so, and all I could find were language lessons in Brazilian Portuguese. I was delighted to find your program. It teaches without being preachy, and by the end of the 3rd session, I was actually feeling as though I was making really good progress.

I bought the 10 lesson version and practiced the program extensively for 3 months. Listening and repeating the phrases allowed me to develop excellent pronunciation. However, the phrases that I learned were very limited. I would have preferred more phrases that were useful in travel. When I got to Portugal, I started out every encounter with "excuse me, sir or madam, I speak a little portuguese, not very well." and with that almost every single person would reply back to me in Portuguese, "No you speak very well." which leads me to believe that listening and repeating this phrase multiple times made it perfect, so much that they thought I could really speak Portuguese, however, I knew little else. I could get two beers and the bathroom. However, sometimes when I asked where something was I could not understand the answer, because I only knew if they said it was here or there, if it was down the street and near something or this or that, I had no idea what they were saying, but again my accent was so good that they clearly figured I must speak Portuguese pretty well.

Comments about Port (Euro) Phase 1, Units 1-10:

This is an excellent tool for learning Portuguese--the pacing is excellent, and I'm learning much faster than I thought. Pimsleur is great. I used the Croatian language tapes 2 years ago, and someone in Croatia told me I knew more Croatian than people who had lived there 10 years.

Comments about Port (Euro) Phase 1, Units 1-10:

I bought the 10 lesson set to get a basic understanding of Portuguese prior to my trip to Portugal this summer. I've always had problems with learning and retaining languages and never really got enough from learning books. This program was so much fun to do. It really helped to hear a real, practical conversation and then break it down, so that I could get all the pronunciation correct and build up my vocabulary for any sentence it could be used in. Then when I might have started to forget, previous words and phrases were brought up throughout the various lessons. Once I arrived in Portugal, I was so glad to have learned a bit. While most people speak English, there were several restaurants and even a train station agent that didn't speak even a little! I was so proud to order food for myself and have small conversations in 100% Portuguese. I liked the language so much and learning it was so much fun that I'm really hoping to learn more in the future if Pimsleur would come out with more lessons. My only complaint of this program is that it stopped at 10 lessons and I was only able to learn some basics. I would have enjoyed having some more reading lessons too. Otherwise, I highly recommend it to everyone!

Comments about Port (Euro) Phase 1, Units 1-10:

I liked how the lessons were bundled into 30 minutes. I thought the content was very limited. More specifically, the vocabulary that was introduced was very selective and hardly enough for a traveler (e.g., I learned how to ask where is something located, but for possible answers all I got was "over here and over there," they didn't even cover words like left, right, up, down. north, south, east, west. And for numbers, they only went up to 11. Each lesson was more of a repeat of the previous lesson with only a few new words introduced. And with the accompanying reading lesson, the definitions of the words were never provided, and most were not words that we covered in the daily lessons. The quality of the recording was good and the emphasis on pronunciation was beneficial. I did appreciate that this material was for learning European Portuguese as I found it difficult to find many options (vs. Brazilian Portuguese which is far more popular). Considering I only paid $40+/- for this material, I guess I got what I paid for.
