The Easiest and Fastest Way to Learn Brazilian Portuguese
Whether you want to travel, communicate with friends or colleagues, reconnect with family, or just understand more of what’s going on in the world around you, learning Brazilian Portuguese will expand your horizons and immeasurably enrich your life.

The best part is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or take years to master. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes, and we get you speaking right from the first day. Pimsleur courses use a scientifically-proven method that puts you in control of your learning. If you’ve tried other language learning methods but found they simply didn’t stick, then you owe it to yourself to give Pimsleur a try.

Why Pimsleur?
- Quick + Easy – Only 30 minutes a day.
- Portable + Flexible – Core lessons can be done anytime, anywhere, and easily fit into your busy life.
- Proven Method – Works when other methods fail.

- Works for everyone – Recommended for ages 13 and above.

What’s Included?
- 90, 30-minute audio lessons
- 3 hours of Brazilian Portuguese reading instruction and practice
- In total, 48 hours of audio, all featuring native speakers
- a Reading Booklet for each level and a User’s Guide

What You’ll Learn
This program includes all of Brazilian Portuguese Levels 1, 2, and 3. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a high-intermediate level of speaking and understanding Brazilian Portuguese.

Every lesson contains an introductory conversation and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced. Emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension. By the end of the program, you’ll have gained experience participating in many informal and some formal discussions on practical, social, and semiprofessional topics. You’ll skillfully form longer, more complex sentences, and most importantly, you’ll find yourself being understood, even by native speakers unused to dealing with foreigners.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30 for each level. These lessons, which total about three hours, are designed to give you practice sounding out Brazilian Portuguese and then to help you progress to reading for meaning. They also provide extensive additional vocabulary. Before you know it, you’ll be reading Brazilian Portuguese with the ease and flexibility of a native speaker.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Brazilian Portuguese Language
Portuguese is the mother tongue of about 230 million people, mainly in Portugal and the Portuguese islands in the Atlantic, Brazil, and Portugal’s former overseas provinces in Africa and Asia.

I have been thoroughly enjoying my studies in Portuguese using the Pimsleur method. I open the audio file in Audacity which allows me to pause, repeat and loop-repeat words or phrases I have trouble pronouncing. I try to become fluent as I go and I am in lesson 20 of Phase 1 and it is getting much easier. (I must say that I am coming from a background of knowing Spanish, which no doubt influences the facility with which I am able to learn the material, but it is very well done with natural repetition of words and phrases in the context of conversation, which is great!)
I have thought of ways that would greatly improve the program. One would be for the lessons to be done in video format so that you can see the speaker's lips (along with audio for times when you cannot use the video and for review purposes on the run). I have struggled with knowing if I am pronouncing something correctly and am afraid of getting into bad habits. To help me with this, I happened onto some Portuguese lessons by Street Smart Brasil on YouTube that was helpful to me to correct some mistakes I was making in pronunciation. I could do that because I could see the lips and mouth of the speaker.
I believe the Pimsleur method of focusing first of all on the oral language is good and important for good pronunciation, fluency and intonation because if you go from the written language it could mess you up, however once I know how to say the words and sentences correctly with good pronunciation and intonation, I would also like to know how they are written, because I am a visual person and seeing words help me to learn a language. I would like to be able to read and write the language when I am done with the studies. I appreciate having reading lessons, but I wish they would better reflect the vocabulary used in the lessons up to that point and that each word, phrase or sentence would be repeated orally at least two or three times because I also want to assimilate the correct spelling of the language which I am not able to do in a single rapid reading. I would also like to see the translation of the words, phrases or sentences, so there is understanding with the reading. I have been going to Google Translate to get the meaning of the phrases that are in the reading lessons that were not taught in the oral lessons up to that point. I also find that I am pausing and looking up words during the oral lessons because I would like to know how they are written. I would not need to do that if the reading lessons after the oral lessons reflected the written form of the new material in the lesson. When I am doing the reading lessons, I also make an attempt at writing the pronunciation of the words and phrases, since the Portuguese language is far from phonetic. If that were already done it would be a great help.
I don't think they should try to make the reading lessons fit into the 30 minutes of study a day, but rather have the reading lesson as a supplement to the purely oral. I like the fact that the reading lessons also have the audio component, so that you can hear the pronunciation as well as read it. I am thankful for that.
As a whole, I would say that the Pimsleur method is a great method that has room for improvement, but I would still highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn Portuguese. I never dread taking the time to do the language studies. It is done in a way that is interesting and fun. I am thoroughly enjoying the experience, even though I am finding the need to supplement the method with other helps (Audacity, Google Translate and Street Smart Brazil on YouTube).
I really do not miss not having other visual aids, but a video of the lessons would be extremely beneficial for learning Portuguese.
I don't think that a video of the lessons in Spanish would be necessary, but for Portuguese where the sounds of the language are sooo different from English, it would be extremely helpful.
Thank you, Pimsleur for your wonderful help in learning Portuguese. I would encourage you to continue to improve your product.

I use it everyday when on my walk. And I compare the value based on:

1) The price of other programs.
2) The value of other programs.
3) The way Pimsleur programs have worked for me in the past.
4) The completeness

The price was higher than most other programs. I have Michel Thomas and Rosetta Stone. I still bought this one because I felt it's great for pronunciation.

In the past, Pimsleur programs were different because they went "backwards". When introducing a new word, the teacher would pronounce the word backwards. E.g. wards, ck, bah (would make "backwards"). This is great to get the exact sound. As the program advances, this unique method is dropped. The other part is that the written text (PDF) doesn't correspond to the lesson learned. Why, I'm not sure. It would be so much better to learn something and then read it in the text.

I'm half way through the 30 lessons (and I've learned a lot). Whether I'll speak fluently by the time I get to 30, I'm not sure. I'll only know once I'm done. I've been studying this every day, six days a week, so I'm pretty diligent, but let's see at the end. As compared with any live learning I've done in the past, I'd say this is good value. I think it gives you a very solid foundation and I wouldn't hesitate to buy their products again. I would, however, look at how it can be improved (based on suggestions) and yes, improve it.

It could also be a little bit funny. It's far, far too serious.

Comments about Pimsleur Portuguese (Brazilian) Levels 1-3 MP3:

I started the Pimsleur Brazilian Portuguese course about four or five months ago and I finished it about six weeks ago. It was very easy for me to fit it into my day because I can do Pimsleur courses while walking to work, doing chores and so on - while doing anything that doesn't really tax my brain. I had a head start because I already speak Spanish which is very, very similar to Portuguese but I have never previously studied Portuguese (beyond learning how to ask for a beer). Having done all 90 lessons, I can now watch and understand very low-brow Brazilian daytime TV (specifically, I have been watching A Hora Do Faro on TVRecord - I think I understand a bit more than half of what is said on the show, but in context I get the gist of all of it). One minor issue is that the Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 courses (lessons 1-30, 31-60 and 61-90) seem to have been completed and/or updated at different times with the result that sometimes a word is introduced early on, the as it were introduced again, as if for the first time, later on. But this is really a very, very minor niggle. I did not bother with the reading lessons (except to treat them as listening comprehension) because reading Portuguese is very easy so what is the point in lessons? But overall I am extremely pleased with the result, and specifically with the fact that I can now practise by watching TV - and by listening to music (such as the songs of the magical Paula Fernandes, who I first saw singing on A Hora Do Faro).
