The Lithuanian Language
Lithuanian is spoken by some 3 million native speakers in Lithuania and about 170,000 abroad. There are two main dialects: Aukštaiciu (Highland Lithuanian) and Žemaiciu / Žemaitiu (Lowland Lithuanian). Pimsleur's Lithuanian teaches the standard dialect, based on West High Lithuanian.

Comments about Lithuanian Phase 1, Unit 01-05:

This program is easy to use, and it really gets what you learn planted firmly into your long-term memory. It teaches you some useful phrases and accustoms the beginner to the sound of the language.

I wish it had review units. If you get rusty, there's no way to brush up what you learn. A unit which quizzed you on everything you've already learned would be very useful. Also I wish the written word lists included all the words in the program.

The program, which only includes a total of ten units is not nearly enough to get you started having even basic conversations. I wish it went further. It's enough to give you confidence to say the usual bare-bones stuff, like Hello, How are you?, I don't understand, etc., but it doesn't go very far beyond that. Lithuanian is a highly inflected language, like Latin, and there's a lot to learn.

A lot of the conversations involve talking about whether we're going to drink wine or beer, and where and when we're going to do this. Having visited Lithuania, I can attest that this is in fact a frequent topic of conversation!

This program is very well designed and a great way to learn, but you'll definitely need to find another source if you want to proceed with your study of Lithuanian. When I visited, I took with me a Lithuanian grammar book, which helped me build on the Pimsleur program.
