What You’ll Learn
This program includes all of Japanese Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 – 60 hours spoken language practice, culture notes, and reading instruction. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a high-intermediate level of speaking and understanding Japanese. Every lesson contains an introductory conversation and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice of all vocabulary introduced. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension to promote proficiency in spoken Japanese. At the completion of this program, you’ll be speaking and understanding Japanese with near-fluency and with impressive conversational skills.

Reading and Writing in Japanese
By the 5th century AD Chinese characters began to be widely used in Japan. This early alphabet, Kanji, created new literacy, but brought many complications in pronunciation. In the 8th century, two new phonetic alphabets, or kana, were devised to bridge the gap: Hiragana and Katakana. Hiragana is used along with the Kanji to show the syllables that form suffixes and particles – “sounds” in other words, while Katakana was used for foreign loan words, like “coffee” or “computer.” Today in Japan, the three writing systems are combined, with Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana all appearing within a single sentence.

In Japanese 4 you will begin to learn to read the Hiragana alphabet. There are forty-six basic Hiragana syllables, with additional modified syllables that represent voiced and contracted sounds. Japanese is usually written from top to bottom in vertical columns and from right to left.

This course will expand your vocabulary, encourage you to share your opinions and interests, introduce you to less formal conversations, and help you to venture out to new travel destinations in Japan. You’ll learn to share your impressions and opinions, express gratitude, describe people and places, and convey your preferences with characteristic Japanese politeness and grace.

Culture Notes are included at the ends of Levels 1, 2, and 3. Totaling about three hours, these Notes are designed to provide you with background information on the language and insight into Japanese culture.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principal of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Constant Feedback Loop + Build-in Testing
Pimsleur’s unique system of cues and responses provides a constant feedback loop. You can test yourself as you go, and make incremental corrections in creating and refining cohesive, clear responses.

Gives You a Solid Foundation
Each lesson and Level builds on the ones before it and in turn sets the framework for the lessons and Levels that follow. Learn what you need to prosper and to build a foundation to future learning.

The Japanese Language
Japanese has many “registers” or levels of politeness. Throughout every level of your Pimsleur course, you will learn how to speak at a polite register, which is appropriate in virtually any situation you are likely to encounter in Japan. In Level 4, you will also learn some ways of speaking in a less formal manner, used in conversation between friends, family members, or colleagues who are at the same level in an organization.

Comments about Pimsleur Japanese Levels 1-4 MP3:

This product is great for learning common phrases and increasing your vocabulary. The one downside that I see is the lack of written transcripts which would be invaluable in helping me practice the words that I keep tripping up over.

For example, try typing "not skilled" into Google Translate, you get something that is nothing like what is spoken in the audio and because of the fact that I keep tripping over the words I inevitably end up saying it wrong each and every time. A written transcript would "really" be helpful for those moments.

Other than that, it is a fantastic product so far and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in building their vocabulary and for learning helpful phrases.

Comments about Pimsleur Japanese Levels 1-4 CD:

I am a German and Spanish teacher with 45 years of experience. I wanted to learn Japanese in preparation for a summer of teaching English in Japan. I had never used Pimsleur before, and was delighted with it. At the same time that I was using Pimsleur, I was taking a more academic course (Georgia Public Broadcasting's "Irasshai".) What I think is so excellent about Pimsleur is that it teaches a few things about structure, but with only a basic functional explanation, leaving the student aware of and wondering about very important aspects of the grammar. This leaves the student mentally prepared to understand the grammar when she takes a more academic course. Nothing makes it easier to understand an explanation than having already thought and wondered about it the issue.
But even if a student did nothing but Pimsleur, she acquires good survival skills. One of my recent German students had done preparation in German with Pimsleur, and his pronunciation is astoundingly good, I am guessing because he never saw writing which mislead him.

Comments about Pimsleur Japanese Levels 1-4 CD:

I give Pimsleur 4 of 5 stars, I was disappointed in how they do not contain up to Pimsluer Level 5 like they have for French and other Languages, Let me talk about the bad new's first. 1. The program sometimes repeats rarely certain words or phrases unique to the learner. 2. Some languages only have 4 or less Pimsleur Levels. 3. They should have a special level warning the user of slang words, and words to avoid using, or words that are not for a intelligent conversation. Finally 4. Pimsleur Level 1 lessons 1-10 might be a bit basic for a person having some back-ground in the language, so the first 10 lessons are a bit slow, or for me it was, "asking some lad at a bar or restaurant if you can eat or drink with them, at your place or their place, what time, are you Japanese, I am American, today, or tomorrow, hi, bi, see you tomorrow, numbers 1-20 learn," but this is very important to learn for the Novice user, having no back-ground.

The pros overtake the cons, first used the program, never talked to anyone, was shocked when I finally had my first conversation, the person thought I was actually fluent at first, then kept talking, with slang or unfamiliar lines, so I said, "Sumimasen, Watashi-wa Nihingo ga tsukoshi wakarimasu, demo-mada jozu-jari-masen." (Excuse me, I understand a little, but im not yet so skilled). 2. The program will have you actually speaking like a "Native Nihonjin" 3. A high-speed program versus the other ones i tried like "10 minutes a day" and "Rosetta-Stone", Pimsleur is strictly speaking and not sitting in front of a computer clicking on pictures 4. You can actually learn how to read and write with the booklet. 5 in every level you are becoming more fluent, if you take the program serious and are trying with all your heart to learn. 6. I took language courses in High school, actually learned more on my own with Pimsleur. 7. You will have the ability to get business done 8. Pimsleur is only for serious learning, I recommend for all.

Service and delivery comments:

The delivery I made over the phone, just to have some ones name and info, in case anything goes wrong with the mail, I can have back-up, the delivery came in about 6-7 days, from New-York, and they were professional.
