The best part is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or take years to master. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes, and we get you speaking right from the first day. Pimsleur courses use a scientifically-proven method that puts you in control of your learning. If you’ve tried other language learning methods but found they simply didn’t stick, then you owe it to yourself to give Pimsleur a try.

What You’ll Learn
This program includes all of Japanese Levels 1, 2, and 3. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a high-intermediate level of speaking and understanding Japanese.

Every lesson contains an introductory conversation and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced. Emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension. By the end of the program, you’ll have gained experience participating in many informal and some formal discussions on practical, social, and semiprofessional topics. You’ll skillfully form longer, more complex sentences, and most importantly, you’ll find yourself being understood, even by native speakers unused to dealing with foreigners.

Culture Notes are included at the end of Lesson 30 for each level. Totaling about three hours, these Notes are designed to provide you with background information on the language and insight into the culture.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Japanese Language
Japanese is spoken by about 130 million people, 122 million of whom are in Japan. There are also speakers in the Ryukyu Islands, Korea, Taiwan, parts of the United States, and Brazil. Japanese has many “registers” or levels of politeness. Pimsleur’s Japanese courses will teach you how to speak at a polite register, which is appropriate in virtually any situation you are likely to encounter in Japan.

Tech Talk
- CDs are formatted for playing in all CD players, including car players, and users can copy files for use in iTunes or Windows Media Player.

Comments about Japanese I-III:

I just absolutely love Pimsleur Japanese. I usually struggle with remembering languages and it was very hard for me until I used this program. The words it teaches you sit in your brain, the speaker is very clear and it is only 30 minutes a day. Pimsleur also uses native speakers in its lessons so you get down the accent which is great. For people who struggle with language or just don't have the time in your day to learn, this program is for you

Comments about Japanese Phases 1-3:

I purchased and completed Pimsleur Japanese Levels 1-3 Comprehensive back in 2000 before going on a vacation to Japan. I can say that the Pimsleur method is by far the best at getting you up and using the language. This method teaches you how to hear and quickly reply to someone without having to translate in your head. If you complete the full Pimsleur course you will be able to get by in Japan at the hotel, while shopping, eating out, etc. I haven't traveled to Japan for several years now, but soon I have to go on business. I just completed the full Rosetta Stone course and I can say that Rosetta Stone does a good job with reading and writing, but the conversational skills are far below Pimsleur. Pimsleur lessons have Japanese people speaking at normal/full speed, while Rosetta Stone speakers talk very very slow for the entire course. So, I came back here to download the Pimsleur lessons again so I can regain my mastery of speaking Japanese! I love the fact that I can now play these on my Ipod (I remember the old days with cassette tapes!)

Service and delivery comments:

First, I need more levels! I'm begging you to make Pimsleur Japanese Level 4!

Second, you need to add online content. Just like cassette tapes went out of style, Pimsleur needs to catch up with the modern times. This could be word-matching games or flash cards to help memorize the nouns, verbs, adjectives, from the audio lessons. Your online content should also include a message board for subscribes to ask questions to the community, and could also have live tutor sessions for 1-5 learners by web chat (for an extra fee, of course).

    Comments about Japanese Phases 1-3:

I was reluctant to purchase the entire 90 session package, but I am so glad I did. I am on lesson 15 and I get excited to do the 30 minute daily lessons. It is so easy to follow and I use a notepad to write down words and go back and review before I go to the next lesson. I am frankly very surprised how easy this is to follow and I am very surprised at my progress on only 15 lessons. I cannot imagine how advanced I will be after 90 lessons. After the Japanese, my goal is to do Spanish and French. I would recommend this for anyone at any age.

      Comments about Japanese I-III:

I use this product as recommended: once a day, every day. I would consider myself to be a visual learner but Pimsleur has shown me differently. It's simple and it works so I'm happy. I do find that as I progress, I am needing to do each lesson more than once so I can progress into the next lesson without being confused. That's more of my own learning disabilities and less Pimsleur's fault. I recommend this to everyone. If you can find the time and devotion to 30 minutes a day, you won't regret it.

        Comments about Japanese Phases 1-3:

Pimsleur is the real deal. It truly is the fastest way to learn a language. I majored in Linguistics in college where we studied the works of Paul Pimsleur. The method really does work - and is a lot cheaper than college language classes! It is very challenging if not impossible to learn from a non-native speaker or learn from a book and develop near-native fluency. The program is set up in a way that stores the language into your long term memory. The Japanese covered in this course is very fundamental to any situation you may encounter. Emphasis on social cues are included as well as double-consonants. By the time you are done with Stage 3 you will have a VERY sound working knowledge of Japanese and could easily get around there. It quickly surpassed the four semesters I took in college and made my pronunciation, fluency and overall confidence higher.
