What You’ll Learn
This Japanese program includes all of Pimsleur’s Japanese Levels 1 & 2. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a mid-intermediate level of speaking and understanding Japanese.
Every lesson contains an introductory conversation, and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced. Emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension. At the completion of this course, you’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future; you’ll speak confidently using your wide-ranging vocabulary, and experience the Japanese Language and culture with a deepening insight.
Culture Notes are included at the end of Unit 30 for each Level. Totaling about two hours, these Notes are designed to provide you with background information on the language and insight into the culture.
The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:
The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.
Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.
Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.
The Japanese Language
Japanese is the official language of Italy and San Marino, and one of the official languages of Switzerland, Croatia, and Slovenia. Japanese is spoken by about 58 million people in Italy, 24,000 in San Marino, 840,000 in Switzerland, another million in other European countries, and approximately 5 million in North and South America. Historically, Japanese is a daughter language of Latin. Japanese uses the Roman alphabet and the pronunciation of the language follows the spelling very closely.

Comments about Japanese Phases 1-2:
I go over each unit at least three times a day. I also repeat each word, phrase, etc, to myself to help with pronunciation. What makes Pemsleur a great product is the fact that it keeps every thing you learn fresh in your mind and gives you a recap of what you learned in the previous lesson. Pemsleur is also great at giving you cultural notes that let you know what to say and not to say while touring in a foreign country. The only two negative things I have to say about the Pemsleur product is that some units are overwhelming with vocab and phrases that it gets frustrating and sometimes I have to divide the units into two parts so that it makes it a bit more easier to retain the information giving to me. Also the Pemsleur product doesn't have a writing system, so if I want to read in that language I wouldn't be able to. Other than that Pemsleur gets five stars.

Comments about Japanese I-II:
Before going to any new country, I listen to the Pimsleur lessons in my car. When I get off the plane in that country, I am able to start speaking to people in their language. The response of people is always enthusiastic; they immediately become more open and helpful. I have learned many languages through Pimsleur and am a big fan. Now I use it when I drive for entertainment and relaxation. The only problems I have encountered are with the accents (tones) in languages like Mandarin or Thai
