The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension, and on learning to speak Japanese.

The Japanese Language
Japanese is spoken by about 130 million people, 122 million of whom are in Japan. There are also speakers in the Ryukyu Islands, Korea, Taiwan, parts of the United States, and Brazil. Japanese has many “registers” or levels of politeness. Pimsleur’s Japanese courses will teach you how to speak at a polite register, which is appropriate in virtually any situation you are likely to encounter in Japan.

Comments about Pimsleur Japanese Level 3 Lessons 16-20 MP3:

I completed the full Pimsleur Japanese course about 15 years ago and I am back for a refresher. Here is some advice... It's important to complete all phases of Pimsleur Japanese before going to Japan. If you do that, you will be able to get by during shopping, eating out, etc. If you supplement Pimsleur with a Japanese reading and writing program you will really be ready to go to Japan.
Next, I have done the full Rosetta Stone course... it's pretty good but the listening and speaking lessons in Pimsleur are far better. Pimsleur teaches pattern sentences so that you can quickly respond in Japanese without thinking. Also, Pimsleur lessons speak at NORMAL speed while the Rosetta Stone lessons are unrealistically slow. After finishing Rosetta Stone, I needed to come back to Pimsleur to bring my speaking and listening skills up to speed. Also, I love the digital format... Years ago I had to use tapes and CDs. Now I can carry the full Pimsleur course on my IPhone everywhere I go.

I looked at a number of different online and self-taught courses before settling on the Pimsleur courses. I could not have made a better choice.
