Each lesson provides 30 minutes of spoken language practice, with an introductory conversation, and new vocabulary and structures. Detailed instructions enable you to understand and participate in the conversation. Practice for vocabulary introduced in previous lessons is included in each lesson. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension, and on learning to speak Japanese.

The Japanese Language
Japanese is spoken by about 130 million people, 122 million of whom are in Japan. There are also speakers in the Ryukyu Islands, Korea, Taiwan, parts of the United States, and Brazil. Japanese has many “registers” or levels of politeness. Pimsleur’s Japanese courses will teach you how to speak at a polite register, which is appropriate in virtually any situation you are likely to encounter in Japan.

Comments about Japanese Phase 1, Unit 11-15:

I first bought Japanese I, lessons 1-10 in 2007 before my first trip to Japan. At first, I had difficulty learning through listening, as I am mostly a visual person and wanted to see how things were spelled, etc. But, the Pimsleur method works, and while in Japan, I was able to get by with basic Pimsleur phrases and a phrasebook.

It's 8 years later, and I am now progressing in the Pimsleur lessions (Japanese and Spanish) for fun and for brain retraining. Learning languages by sound is helping me to rewire my brain through careful listening, perfecting accents, memorization, learning a new skill, etc.

I learn twice for one lesson. 30 minutes a day. The instruction is excellent. It teaches you the way how Japanese people talk in their daily life.
