What You’ll Learn
This program includes all of Italian Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 – 60 hours of spoken language practice and 4 hours of reading instruction and practice. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a high-intermediate level of speaking and understanding Italian. Every lesson contains an introductory conversation and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice of all vocabulary introduced. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension to promote proficiency in spoken Italian. At the completion of this program, you’ll be speaking and understanding Italian with near-fluency and with impressive conversational skills.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 for each level. These lessons, which total about four hours, are designed to give you practice sounding out Italian and then to help you progress to reading for meaning. They also provide extensive additional vocabulary. You’ll be reading Italian with the ease and flexibility of a native speaker.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Italian Language
Italian is the official language of Italy and San Marino, and one of the official languages of Switzerland, Croatia, and Slovenia. Italian is spoken by about 58 million people in Italy, 24,000 in San Marino, 840,000 in Switzerland, another million in other European countries, and approximately 5 million in North and South America. Historically, Italian is a daughter language of Latin. Italian uses the Roman alphabet and the pronunciation of the language follows the spelling very closely.

Tech Talk
- CDs are formatted for playing in all CD players, including car players, and users can copy files for use in iTunes or Windows Media Player.

I bought the CD set of sixteen Italian lessons in preparation for a vacation in Italy last year. They were great! I used them in my car on my 40 minute commute to work - made the traffic bearable and me understandable to the Italians I met in Italy.
Now we are planning a longer vacation to Italy sometime next year and I am using this purchase on my iPad on my daily commute. I love engaging in conversation with the Pimsleur voices and hearing my own ability to speak Italian improve each week.
I find I have to make time for the reading lessons in groups of 2 or 3. Other than that, I would recommend this method to anyone who wants to learn to speak a foreign language without painful declensions and conjugations!

Comments about Italian Phases 1-4:

I use the iPhone App in the car and have been able to be consistent every day because of using my commute time. The listen and repeat process works well to expose me to the language much more than some free apps and language aids I was using. I like how older words and phrases are periodically brought back for a reminder.

For me, I also need some visual. So I don't think this course is enough on its own. I use a tablet app that is visual, allowing me to see words, type my answers, etc. I think the combination is good for me.

Comments about Italian Phases 1-4:

Great course. The course goes fast enough that it's a constant challenge, but not so fast that I can't keep up. I have a 30 minute drive to work, which is just the perfect amount of time to do a lesson each morning. My only criticism is that the app is difficult to use because the buttons are too small and hard to hit (iPhone).

    Comments about Italian Phases 1-4:

I use the product daily as advised. It is a great way to familiarize with words, expressions, pronunciation. It is a very accommodating system. While the methodology calls for listening and repeat, there are times I wish I could see the word. But I am here to learn and not change a proven method

      Comments about Italian I-IV:

Italian 1-4 was purchased as a Christmas gift for a loved one. I noticed the incredible savings offered during the 50th anniversary sale, and was immediately convinced the time to buy was at hand. A bit of a shipping delay occurred due to the proximity of processing and shipping to Christmas Day. However, a phone call to Customer Service along with some detail searching led to a happy ending. I received the gift before Christmas and was able to surprise my beloved. Now, we are enjoying the process of learning a new language in preparation for a future trip to Italy and Sicily. Not to mention, we are gaining a language which cannot be interpreted by the children; hee-hee. Thanks for the support and the knowledge.

        Comments about Italian Phases 1-4:

I have been a student of Italian for many years but the only program that consistently helps me with my ability to speak is the Pimsleur Italian Program. Not only does it correctly and adeptly insert advanced grammar techniques I have studied, it does so in a thought provoking manner. What is so crucial is the manner in which repitition with the program has aided by ability to speak with ease and comfort and with the proper pronunciation. Pimsleur is unmatched in my experience in the ability to enhance and improve anyone's proper pronunciation. The compliments I receive when traveling are incredible. I cannot wait for a lesson 5 to become available.
