What You’ll Learn
Builds upon skills taught in Pimsleur’s Italian Level 1.

In the first 10 lessons you’ll begin using the past tense. Structures become more complex and informal speech is introduced. Soon you’ll take part in conversations about ordering meals, shopping, and local tourist attractions. As you progress, your fluency will increase as your vocabulary expands.

The next 10 lessons will allow you to further combine and build upon known elements, and produce longer and more complex sentences. You’ll be discussing business and social activities, expressing your interests, and talking about the weather.

In the final 10 lessons you’ll double your vocabulary and have several hundred structures to draw upon. You’ll learn to express yourself with relative structures – faster, slower, etc. You’ll be able to ask for assistance in many situations and to ask for directions to various locations. You’ll explore sports and leisure activities, manage changing money and banking, and discuss travel plans. By the end of the program, you’ll be speaking at a mid-intermediate level with near-native pronunciation, and you’ll be comfortable meeting most social demands and limited job requirements.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to give you practice reading Italian, and to provide you with some insight into Italian culture with proverbs, common expressions, and a broad look at things you’ll experience when visiting a Italian-speaking country.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Italian Language
Italian is the official language of Italy and San Marino, and one of the official languages of Switzerland, Croatia, and Slovenia. Italian is spoken by about 58 million people in Italy, 24,000 in San Marino, 840,000 in Switzerland, another million in other European countries, and approximately 5 million in North and South America. Historically, Italian is a daughter language of Latin. Italian uses the Roman alphabet and the pronunciation of the language follows the spelling very closely.

By Phase 1, lesson 5 I was feeling a little like getting back to Rosetta Stone, but at lesson 6, it clicked. I was actually speaking Italian, unpo. I used it everyday as suggested.
I really liked the non-intimidating manner it is presented, the amount of time that is required was not restrictive (30 minute sessions, done). I purchased the MP3 Phase 2 which to my surprise was much less than the CD Phase 1 I bought a while ago. I am traveling to Italy, staying for 2 months and bringing it with me in itunes. Love it.
The pronunciation list of words was very useful in helping to picture the way a word was said and begin to see words spelled in my minds eye.
I like the fact that it's mobile and you start right where you left off anywhere any time. You aren't a slave to one computer or computer desktop station.
One draw back is that I felt the need to look up spelling after the sessions even though I was saying the words correctly, but couldn't quite figure out how it was spelled. That is probably just my own personal learning style. As I mentioned in the likes, spelling became apparent when I learned proper pronunciation of the language alphabet using the pronunciation word list printout beginning with Lesson 11 or 12.

Mostly a well constructed course which, if approached with some rigor, will get you started on a quest to learn another language. My principle complaint centers around the absence of written reference material. There will often be words or a phrases similar in sound but differing in context, tense or singular as opposed to plural. I would have found the course less frustrating in this respect if each lesson was accompanied by a written text of the subject matter.

Comments about Pimsleur Italian Level 2 MP3:

I use Pimsleur in my car on the way to work in the mornings. It's the best thing out there. I have tried Rosetta and a couple other programs but Pimsleur seems to work the best for me. It's very simple and best of all, they allow you to constantly increase your vocabulary and sentence construction based on previous lessons. I would go out on a limb and say it's probably the best language program out there!

Comments about Pimsleur Italian Level 2 MP3:

I grew up in a household where Italian was spoken between my grandfather and my parents, so I picked up a good bit. After majoring in Spanish in college my Italian was left in tatters. I decided to re-learn Italian and the Pimsleur method was my first choice. I had already used it to learn some Norwegian (my wife grew up in Norway), and then I completed the two levels of Pimsleur's Modern Greek to prepare for a trip. This method is so much better than the alternatives because it is extraordinarily practical. One learns to speak immediately and to speak about practical things a traveler will encounter right away in a foreign country. The emphasis in the first level on directions, eating, buying things, etc. bypasses all the classroom vocabulary one gets with grammar books. I am so happy with this course I intend on doing all the levels of Italian Pimsleur offers.

Comments about Pimsleur Italian Level 2 MP3:

I love it. I will be traveling to Italy in May and since I'm 36% Italian I decided it's time to learn Italian. The program really work, I am understanding and speaking the language better every day. My goal is to be through unit 4 or 5 for our trip. I have done Rosetta Stone in Spanish and it just doesn't compare. Gratzi Pimsleur!

      Short on vocabulary

Comments about Pimsleur Italian Level 2 MP3:

Every day I studied for three weeks as recommended. What was taught was excellent but much too short on vocabulary. (Two full courses of Italian and still all the months of the year, the colors, etc. have not been given! I can't go into a shop and buy anything or order anything at a restaurant except wine, milk, coffee or beer!) Moreover, the course designers have been obsessed with tennis. Three full days of learning how to say I play, played, will play tennis with different friends and relatives. Absurd! Most of us are traveling and don't have time for tennis. We want to learn how to ask about museums, national monuments, and tourist attractions. (I don't even play tennis, besides. Can't we at least learn how to talk about golf, music, of other activities?) This entire course needs revamping.

I'm almost done with this course and every lesson I completed, my Indian friends are impressed with my progress. It's so much better than spending thousands of dollars on the language school.
