What You’ll Learn
Builds upon skills taught in Pimsleur’s Italian Level 1.

In the first 10 lessons you’ll begin using the past tense. Structures become more complex and informal speech is introduced. Soon you’ll take part in conversations about ordering meals, shopping, and local tourist attractions. As you progress, your fluency will increase as your vocabulary expands.

The next 10 lessons will allow you to further combine and build upon known elements, and produce longer and more complex sentences. You’ll be discussing business and social activities, expressing your interests, and talking about the weather.

In the final 10 lessons you’ll double your vocabulary and have several hundred structures to draw upon. You’ll learn to express yourself with relative structures – faster, slower, etc. You’ll be able to ask for assistance in many situations and to ask for directions to various locations. You’ll explore sports and leisure activities, manage changing money and banking, and discuss travel plans. By the end of the program, you’ll be speaking at a mid-intermediate level with near-native pronunciation, and you’ll be comfortable meeting most social demands and limited job requirements.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to give you practice reading Italian, and to provide you with some insight into Italian culture with proverbs, common expressions, and a broad look at things you’ll experience when visiting a Italian-speaking country.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Italian Language
Italian is the official language of Italy and San Marino, and one of the official languages of Switzerland, Croatia, and Slovenia. Italian is spoken by about 58 million people in Italy, 24,000 in San Marino, 840,000 in Switzerland, another million in other European countries, and approximately 5 million in North and South America. Historically, Italian is a daughter language of Latin. Italian uses the Roman alphabet and the pronunciation of the language follows the spelling very closely.

By Phase 1, lesson 5 I was feeling a little like getting back to Rosetta Stone, but at lesson 6, it clicked. I was actually speaking Italian, unpo. I used it everyday as suggested.
I really liked the non-intimidating manner it is presented, the amount of time that is required was not restrictive (30 minute sessions, done). I purchased the MP3 Phase 2 which to my surprise was much less than the CD Phase 1 I bought a while ago. I am traveling to Italy, staying for 2 months and bringing it with me in itunes. Love it.
The pronunciation list of words was very useful in helping to picture the way a word was said and begin to see words spelled in my minds eye.
I like the fact that it's mobile and you start right where you left off anywhere any time. You aren't a slave to one computer or computer desktop station.
One draw back is that I felt the need to look up spelling after the sessions even though I was saying the words correctly, but couldn't quite figure out how it was spelled. That is probably just my own personal learning style. As I mentioned in the likes, spelling became apparent when I learned proper pronunciation of the language alphabet using the pronunciation word list printout beginning with Lesson 11 or 12.

Mostly a well constructed course which, if approached with some rigor, will get you started on a quest to learn another language. My principle complaint centers around the absence of written reference material. There will often be words or a phrases similar in sound but differing in context, tense or singular as opposed to plural. I would have found the course less frustrating in this respect if each lesson was accompanied by a written text of the subject matter.

Comments about Pimsleur Italian Level 2 MP3:

I studied Italian in college, and then on and off on my own for years and just liken my whole language learning experience to banging my head against the wall...in other words: progress was painful and slow! But, with a family trip to Italy planned, I was determined to succeed this time. After trying a couple different audio programs, (none of them really working) I decided to take the plunge and buy the Level 2 mp3. I was diligent and took the daily units very seriously and I can honestly say that my ability to speak Italian went thru the roof...I wasn't perfect or totally fluent, BUT I had confidence, I had good recall, my accent is great and Italians were surprised that I was able to speak their language as much as I did! I wish I had had Pimsleur back in college--but I plan on continuing my Pimsleur studies even now after we have come back from our trip. And I am looking forward to being fluent one day soon.

Comments about Pimsleur Italian Level 2 MP3:

Pretty useful vocabulary that speakers enunciate very well, and at a comprehensible rate.

While Pimsleur stresses listening to learn, I do better having a script available also, and the course doesn't provide one. It'd aid with understanding where some words end and others begin.

My real "test" comes in October on a trip to Italy.

Comments about Pimsleur Italian Level 2 MP3:

My 30 minute each way daily commute is perfect for doing a Pimsleur lesson twice a day. I do the same lesson at least twice. I also do the same lesson while I exercise (walking on an indoor track) for 30+ minutes. I don't advance to the next lesson until I've mastered one.
Last night I attended an Italian language meet-up, and was able to have a number of basic conversations with native speakers. It was my first ever conversation with real people in Italian. I was also able to eavesdrop on conversations between native speakers and get 75%-90% of their meaning. (It's a group where you're supposed to do that, by the way!)
I'm an American, fluent in Spanush and French. I also studied Portuguese (first three college levels) and have taught several years of HS and middle school Spanish in public schools. This is the best program for people who want to learn to SPEAK and don't care about reading and writing. The Pimsleur method is research based, and it is a superb method to learn to speak.
You do have to repeat; you can't just listen. Couldn't do it where you can't speak aloud, such as bus, train, or plane.
I think that one or two levels of Pimsleur will give you a much more useful command of a language than the usual two ur even three years of high school or even college foreign language. You retain more. Being able to replay a section is great; you can't do that in a class.
I've recommended Pimsleur to many people; I love the method and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn a language.
