The Italian Language
Italian is the official language of Italy and San Marino, and one of the official languages of Switzerland, Croatia, and Slovenia. Italian is spoken by about 58 million people in Italy, 24,000 in San Marino, 840,000 in Switzerland, another million in other European countries, and approximately 5 million in North and South America. Historically, Italian is a daughter language of Latin. Italian uses the Roman alphabet and the pronunciation of the language follows the spelling very closely.

I have taken other sources, even spent 4 weeks in a school in Italy but they all teach grammar and rely on memory. This course is fun and I do it in 30 minute bites which is enough for the brain to handle. In the car is great. Learning is more natural and they don't get into all the rules about conjugating verbs and such which turns on the analytical part of my brain which gets in the way of remembering the language. It becomes math problem. I wish i had study this method before going to Italy because what I really needed to know in order to communicate would have been accessible. Instead I was at I loss because I hadn't learned the right verb tense because it was considered further advanced in the curriculum, but saying "would you like' or 'I would like' is the first thing I reach for when traveling and being polite with strangers. I recommend this whole heartedly. Following up with real life practice is essential to retaining it, also.

I listen in the car whenever I have at least 30 minutes. Sometimes the responses come too quickly to hear clearly or to even repeat it but I know the process, as I have used this system previously. It does help on a 30,000 foot level but I would like to have more advanced "tense" and "person" instruction. Everything is in first or third person. I was disappointed this time in that, by buying the download instead of discs, I am missing out on the reading lessons. This was NOT indicated when purchased and I would have liked to have the reading lessons, had I known
All in all, for the casual traveler, this is a good system but doesn't get very deep in the language.

Comments about Pimsleur Italian Level 1 Lessons 11-15 MP3:

I love Pimsleur. I listen every morning while getting ready for work. I have learned alot, but on my own time. I can listen to the lessons repeatedly until I think I'm ready for the next one. This is a very good language tool. Although I wish there was a workbook or a pocket size booklet that has the lessons so we can refer back to it.

Comments about Pimsleur Italian Level 1 Lessons 11-15 MP3:

The App for Pimsleur has no volume on my iPone.
It can't be turned up and sounds like a whisper. All of my other apps work with full volume and needs turned down. Your app's software has not volume control. I called Pimsleur and was told to delete the app and re-download it. Nothing happened. I have use many different headphones and my friends have tried it to no avail. It is worthless to me unless it used in a silent room.
    It is worthless to me.

Comments about Pimsleur Italian Level 1 Lessons 11-15 MP3:

I use Pimsleur Italian in the car. My usual drive is less than one full lesson, but I tend to go through it two times anyway, and the overlap works well for me.

Some of the 'call-and-respond' portions at the end of the lesson have a subtle bit of humor to them, and I like that. It's fun.

The reading portion does not fit with the lesson directly, but it does give one a chance to see the way words are written and pronounced, they are short, and I think useful. At the very least, I have more confidence when at an Italian restaurant (here in the States).

I suspect no one product can provide a full experience. I am also using DuoLingo to learn Italian, and the approach there is different and so far, complimentary. Pimsleur, especially in the car, is pure audio and works for me.

I am learning Italian just for fun. I plan to continue buying the Pimsleur product. I think the cost is appropriate for the product, and would not like to see it become much more complicated.
