The Easiest and Fastest Way to Learn Italian
Whether you want to travel, communicate with friends or colleagues, reconnect with family, or just understand more of what’s going on in the world around you, learning Italian will expand your horizons and immeasurably enrich your life.

The best part is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or take years to master. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes, and we get you speaking right from the first day. Pimsleur courses use a scientifically-proven method that puts you in control of your learning. If you’ve tried other language learning methods but found they simply didn’t stick, then you owe it to yourself to give Pimsleur a try.

Why Pimsleur?
- Quick + Easy – Only 30 minutes a day.
- Portable + Flexible – Core lessons can be done anytime, anywhere, and easily fit into your busy life.
- Proven Method – Works when other methods fail.
- Self-Paced – Go fast or go slow – it’s up to you.
- Based in Science – Developed using proven research on memory and learning.
- Cost-effective – Less expensive than classes or immersion, and features all native speakers.
- Genius – Triggers your brain’s natural aptitude to learn.
- Works for everyone – Recommended for ages 13 and above.

What’s Included?
- 30, 30-minute audio lessons
- 60 minutes of reading instruction to provide you with an introduction to reading Italian designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent
- in total, 16 hours of audio, all featuring native speakers
- a Reading Booklet and a User’s Guide

What You’ll Learn
In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.

In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.

In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Lesson 9 to provide you with an introduction to reading Italian. In addition, the combined Reading Lessons are included after Lesson 30. These Reading Lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Italian Language
Italian is the official language of Italy and San Marino, and one of the official languages of Switzerland, Croatia, and Slovenia. Italian is spoken by about 58 million people in Italy, 24,000 in San Marino, 840,000 in Switzerland, another million in other European countries, and approximately 5 million in North and South America. Historically, Italian is a daughter language of Latin. Italian uses the Roman alphabet and the pronunciation of the language follows the spelling very closely.

Tech Talk
- CDs are formatted for playing in all CD players, including car players, and users can copy files for use in iTunes or Windows Media Player.

I have traveled to Italy 5 times, but even after taking a year of Italian in college, 6-months with a private tutor, and a month-long immersion course in Tuscany, I never felt comfortable speaking Italian with locals, always getting tongue tied over verb conjugation or verb tenses and ended up just speaking English feeling since I felt that what I was about to say may not be correct Italian.

After taking the first 30 lessons of the Pimsleur method, this most recent trip was a completely different experience. I traveled in Italy for two weeks and for the first time felt like I was able to initiate conversations with locals, answer their questions, and it was a great feeling! I couldn't believe it! The Pimsleur method gave me a whole different perspective on speaking a foreign language and made me confident in putting sentences together without worrying about it being exactly perfect. Every day, some local would compliment me on my Italian, even though what I can currently speak is still very much rudimentary. But I think they were just impressed at how much I was trying to speak and how much I was able to converse, no matter if I may have used a wrong verb tense a few times. They understood me and were excited that I was using their language.

Before Pimsleur, I always learned languages in classes by memorizing verb conjugations and tenses of verbs and memorizing vocabulary, doing a lot of written work. But all that memorization and writing never got me very far since my brain was trying to translate what I wanted to say in my head so I wasn't able to spit out a complete sentence in a timely manner. With Pimsleur, the entire learning process involves actually speaking - repeating after the speaker, answering the speakers questions, and "thinking in Italian," so that the Italian words you are saying start to become natural to your spoken language, and you're no longer trying to translate from English to Italian in your head to say what you want to say. You just know the answer in Italian! I quickly became a serious believer in the Pimsleur Method and have already told countless people I know who love to travel to try it out before their next trip and that it will completely change their travel experience!

I guess my only only complaint was that out of the first 30 lessons, we spent several lessons talking about family relationships - wives, husbands and kids, how many kids we have, who is older, younger, etc. and that didn't seem very relevant for the beginning Italian lessons, especially for travelers. I would've loved to have spent those lessons learning more about descriptions and adjectives of what we want/need at restaurants/shops/tourist destinations/etc - further/shorter, the most/least, the best, what kind of sauce/fish/pasta/wine is this, what someone recommends, etc. and also spend more time on being able to ask more questions about public transportation - the buses, metros, where to buy tickets, how to get a ticket validated, how many stops until you get to your destination, etc. That would've been more helpful for the first 30 lessons. Also, a phrase that I had to look up on my own that was very nice to be able to say to locals who helped me was "Thank you very much for your assistance!" That should be one of the first phrases they teach you when learning a new language.

two complaints:
1. the reading material function is questionable. while helpful to see the words and how they are pronounced, there is no translation so you don't know what you are saying. adding a translation would help with building vocabulary.

2. as the responses become more complex, i found that the amount of time given to reply was too short, making for a frustrating experience. i realize that the program tries to increase speed, however, an addtional few seconds would have been more helpful to me. Also, as sentences become more complex, it was harder to understand/hear the pronunciation of the words by the native speakers. yes, they were speaking at the native pace, which is fine and an important goal to reach, but.....there are lessons that what i heard is just one blur of sound and the individual words were harder to distinguish.

i am currently on lesson 14. i have had to revisit lessons multiple times starting at lesson 12 given what i wrote above. this is not a negative criticism of the program, more an exercise in frustration in progress.

all that said, am i learning the language, as of lesson 14...YES.

Comments about Italian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I have used Pimsleur for both Spanish and Italian lessons and it works extremely well for me. The audio format and bite-size chunks allows me to listen to it on the go, while doing chores around the house, on a walk, etc. which is perfect for my lifestyle. If it required sitting at a computer I would not do it.
Also I was taking Spanish lessons with a teacher and after 6 months of those classes I felt that I was getting more from the Pimsleur lessons due to the way it sinks into my memory better. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Comments about Italian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Absolutely delighted with this product. I tried Rosetta Stone and it just didn't jive with my way of learning. Pimsleur Italian had me speaking basic sentences in conversation so I could learn in context and understand the whys of different verb and noun endings. Even with only 15 lessons before my last-minute trip to Italy, I was able to very naturally speak basic (very basic!) sentences. Can't wait to get over jet lag and finish the next 15 lessons and move on to the next set. I've been recommending this product to everyone!
