Pimsleur® equals success. Just one 30-minute lesson a day gets you speaking and understanding like no other program.

This course includes Lessons 1-16 from the Italian Level 1 program - 8 hours of audio-only effective language learning with real-life spoken practice sessions. Each lesson provides 30 minutes of spoken language practice, with an introductory conversation, and new vocabulary and structures. Detailed instructions enable you to understand and participate in the conversation. Practice for vocabulary introduced in previous lessons is included in each lesson. Topics include: greetings, numbers, meals, shopping, telling time, scheduling activities, and asking and giving directions. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension, and on learning to speak Italian.

Reading instruction begins in Lesson 9 to provide you with an introduction to reading Italian. A Reading Booklet PDF must be downloaded.

The Italian Language
Italian is the official language of Italy and San Marino, and one of the official languages of Switzerland, Croatia, and Slovenia. Italian is spoken by about 58 million people in Italy, 24,000 in San Marino, 840,000 in Switzerland, another million in other European countries, and approximately 5 million in North and South America. Historically, Italian is a daughter language of Latin. Italian uses the Roman alphabet and the pronunciation of the language follows the spelling very closely.

I listen approximately every other day and have so much fun repeating the native speakers. I find myself using the words I remember when I'm at work and at home. I also signed up for a local immersion Italian language course and found what I'd learned in the first 3 lessons of Pimsleur's CD's were quite helpful. I didn't struggle to understand as much as I would have without this exposure. Thank you to Pimsleur for making it so fun and easy to learn.

Interesting to use. Liked the speed at which the language is taught. Just got back from Italy and, unfortunately, I didn't order wine or beer, so the program really didn't help that much. Was disappointed that the 16 sessions only addressed ordering wine and beer, and meeting people at their homes or in restaurants. It was just a part of a larger program and I wasn't aware of that when I purchased it.

Comments about Italian, Conversational:

The Italian professor at our local university said this was the best product out there. I have so enjoyed learning the kinds of phrases that I use as a tourist in Italy -- ordering food, counting money, being able to tell time and asking for directions. The timing of the conversations and the pauses for repeating or answering questions are just right, and I know I will understand so much more on my next trip to Italy.

    Comments about Italian, Conversational:

The conversational Italian program is great! It allows you to practice speaking, which for me has always been a challenge. The words are clearly broken down so you can hear each syllable. With the conversational program, you don't get bogged down in verb conjugations. There is a lot of repetition so you find that you remember whole phrases, not just a random word. It is a perfect introduction to Italian. I look forward to buying the full program in the future.

    Comments about Italian, Conversational:

Interestingly I can concentrate best on a lesson when I am exercising eg bicycling. It does seem to stick because I find myself reviewing dialogue in my mind when I'm resting. I like the way it builds on the most important conversational elements. I do have a base in the grammar so I have that advantage. No negatives yet. I'm on lesson 11 now.
