The Easiest and Fastest Way to Learn Hungarian
Whether you want to travel, communicate with friends or colleagues, reconnect with family, or just understand more of what’s going on in the world around you, learning Hungarian will expand your horizons and immeasurably enrich your life.

The best part is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or take years to master. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes, and we get you speaking right from the first day. Pimsleur courses use a scientifically-proven method that puts you in control of your learning. If you’ve tried other language learning methods but found they simply didn’t stick, then you owe it to yourself to give Pimsleur a try.

Why Pimsleur?
- Quick + Easy – Only 30 minutes a day.
- Portable + Flexible – Core lessons can be done anytime, anywhere, and easily fit into your busy life.
- Proven Method – Works when other methods fail.
- Self-Paced – Go fast or go slow – it’s up to you.
- Based in Science – Developed using proven research on memory and learning.
- Cost-effective – Less expensive than classes or immersion, and features all native speakers.
- Genius – Triggers your brain’s natural aptitude to learn.
- Works for everyone – Recommended for ages 13 and above.

What’s Included?
- 30, 30-minute audio lessons
- 60 minutes of reading instruction to provide you with an introduction to reading Hungarian designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent
- In total, 16 hours of audio, all featuring native speakers
- a Reading Booklet and a User’s Guide

What You’ll Learn
In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.

In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.

In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the Hungarian language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Lesson 11 to provide you with an introduction to reading Hungarian. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with Hungarian pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Hungarian Language
Hungarian is spoken in Hungary and by the Hungarian minorities in 7 neighboring countries. The Hungarian name for the language is Magyar. Pimsleur's Hungarian teaches the "standard" Hungarian, which is based on the North-Eastern dialect spoken throughout Hungary.

Tech Talk
- CDs are formatted for playing in all CD players, including car players, and users can copy files for use in iTunes or Windows Media Player.

Hi, my name is Glenn, and I use the Hungarian course every day and I repeat each Unit for a week (7 times total). I think overall it's a great product and I love learning new things. I think it's very simple and easy to use, and although it's memory based repetition, for me, it works. With that said, I do have a few suggestions: 1. Please make sure that words are properly pronounced in the foreign language...for example, in Hungarian an "S" is an "sh" sound, not an "S" as in English. It's pretty bad when the "Teacher" is saying "Budapest" which is the capital of Hungary as it sounds like in English, when in reality it should sound like "Budapesht." 2. I realize the pupil is supposed to repeat the "native speakers," but after the pupil learns the word or phrase, why repeat the native speakers? Why not say it BEFORE the native speakers? That way, the person learning knows he or she REALLY knows and UNDERSTANDS the word or phrase. Repeating things after the person has had a chance to learn it can cause the person to not really learn it for themselves, but instead just copy what the native speaker says. If this was the real world, you wouldn't always have the luxury of a translator...or a phrase book. So, please, add more time before the native speaker speaks up. I either have to pause the lesson or say the phrase very fast and barely get it out before the native speaker speaks up. 3. I realize there is different dialects, but when learning a new language, different dialects can throw a person off - dialects should be the same...Each word should sound EXACTLY the same with every native speaker in the Units. Dialects can be learned later once fundamentals are established. 4. Please make sure the correct term or word that is to be learned is the CORRECT way of saying something the first time it's said...for example...in Unit 1 the teacher says to say "English" you say "Angolul." So, you learn that, but then he throws a curveball...to say "English" it,s "Angol" and "in English" is "Angolul." So now the person has to relearn the word / phrase, and that can get irritating and confusing. And it can make the student think, "Gee, if the teacher got that word or phrase wrong the first time, how can I trust the teacher (or this program) to get other things right the first time?" So far, that's all I've noticed. Other than that, great product and I highly recommend it. I would TOTALLY get more levels of the Hungarian language if you ever came out with them! I think Hungarian is a beautiful, strong, and unique language! Thank you for making a wonderful product!
Sincerely, Glenn

This course seems to work quite well, but this is my first attempt to learn a new language since I was a kid and therefore difficult to compare to other products. Hungarian is proving to be a bit difficult so I am finding that I have to do each lesson twice to really get the material ingrained. Also, my girlfriend is Hungarian and she is enjoying the more varied communication we now have, however she also critiques some of the pronunciations with the material and it also still seems that I have a bit of an accent. Although against the rules, I try to practice with her as I go through the material. It would be nice to start the reading earlier, but I just started lesson 12 so it will be interesting to see what the end result will be. I am a visual learner so I imagine the spelling of a lot of the words (that is how I remember) and am worried that eventually I will have to relearn the spelling of a lot of these words. Frankly, I don't think that it would affect my accent much.

I used this every day, one to two lessons per day as I had family coming from Hungary. What an awesome product, I could actually speak to them, not fluent but could manage the basics. They were very impressed and could not believe I actually learned on my own. This is a fantastic product. I would request Pimsleur to please make the rest of the lessons right up to a level 5, I would buy all of them in a heartbeat....PLEASE Pimsleur, make the rest of the lessons.

Comments about Pimsleur Hungarian Level 1 MP3:

I am a Spanish speaking person living in Mexico. Languages from eastern Europe are not easy to be learned in my city since there are not Language schools offering these languages such as Hungarian or Polish. Since I need to learn both languages because of business purposes, I get these two languages from Pimsleur. I am greatly surprise on my colleagues in Hungary reaction when I start talking to them in Hungarian. Although I just finish the first 30 lessons and I pursue to finish the 90 lessons, I am already seeing the benefits of following the Pimsleur Language Learning Methodology. I already speak Spanish, English, Japanese, Portuguese, German. I am learning Hungarian, Polish and Mandarin. Spanish was taught by my mother and English was learned with the traditional methodology, which took many years. The other languages were learned using Pimsleur courses, which is the fastest and effective way to learn a language.

I'm almost done with this course and every lesson I completed, my Indian friends are impressed with my progress. It's so much better than spending thousands of dollars on the language school.
