What You’ll Learn
Builds upon skills taught in Pimsleur’s Hindi Level 1.
In the first 10 lessons you’ll learn more past tense expressions. Structures become more complex and informal speech is introduced. Soon you’ll take part in conversations about ordering meals, shopping, and local tourist attractions. As you progress, your fluency will increase as your vocabulary expands.

The next 10 lessons will allow you to further combine and build upon known elements, and produce longer and more complex sentences. You’ll be discussing business and social activities, expressing your interests, and talking about the weather.

In the final 10 lessons you’ll double your vocabulary and have several hundred structures to draw upon. You’ll be able to ask for assistance in many situations and tell various locations of the buildings. You’ll explore sports and leisure activities such as yoga and cooking, manage changing money and banking.

By the end of the program, you’ll be speaking at a mid-intermediate level with near-native pronunciation, and you’ll be comfortable meeting most social demands and limited job requirements.

Reading Lessons, which build upon the reading skills acquired in Level 1, are included at the end of Lesson 30. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to give you practice reading Hindi. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Hindi Language
Hindi, an official language of India as well as the primary language of the Bollywood film industry, is spoken by more than 500 million people. Pimsleur's Hindi teaches Standard Hindi as spoken in New Delhi.

Comments about Pimsleur Hindi Level 2 MP3:

I generally love Pimsleur programs, having used them for Finnish and Farsi, both of which I was studying purely for personal enrichment. However, I am using the Hindi program for career reasons (mainly to supplement by Bangla knowledge while in India), and I have found the program slightly lacking. The main issue, as I mentioned in my review of Hindi 1 is the lack of attention to pronunciation detail. Minor differences in aspiration and the distinction between dental and retroflex consonants (neither of which truly exist in English) means that Pimsleur needed to develop a more systematic approach to this issue. Perhaps some sort of queue and better explanation in the Hindi 1 program. This continues to be an issue in the Hindi 2 program, so it bears repeating.

Other than that, I do find the pace appropriate, and am happy with the choice of key words and phrases, although I think it could move a bit faster and cover more vocabulary, especially with the high frequency of loan words. As a final note, some of the decisions with regards to translation are, I think, a bit wonky. "Over there", for example, is translated as "there abouts over there", which is just odd. Furthermore, I don't think that literal translations like "I to him go am" are useful for instilling an understanding of verb final sentence structure.

All that said, at the end of the day, if you want to learn colloquial Hindi in a short amount of time this is a great place to start. Don't expect to be conversant, but do expect to get your point across after Level 2.

Comments about Pimsleur Hindi Level 2 MP3:

Very, very good product. Level 1 was phenomenal - but there is a fairly major flaw with level 2, in that the male voice speaks FAR too quickly. He's speaking almost at native pace, which when you're trying to understand each word and new vocabulary isn't very useful. The content, and everything else about it is brilliant - just seems like someone could have said "Slow down, the people listening have never spoken these words before and need to hear them individually". Please make Level 3!
