What You’ll Learn
This program includes all of Hebrew Levels 1, 2, and 3. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a high-intermediate level of speaking and understanding Hebrew.

Every lesson contains an introductory conversation and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced. Emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension. By the end of the program, you’ll have gained experience participating in many informal and some formal discussions on practical, social, and semiprofessional topics. You’ll skillfully form longer, more complex sentences, and most importantly, you’ll find yourself being understood, even by native speakers unused to dealing with foreigners.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30 for each Level. These lessons, which total about three hours, are designed to give you practice sounding out Hebrew and then to help you progress to reading for meaning. They also provide extensive additional vocabulary. Before you know it, you’ll be reading Hebrew with the ease and flexibility of a native speaker.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Hebrew Language
Hebrew, a Semitic language, is the official language of Israel. It was once considered a dead language with no native speakers, although it remained in use for liturgical purposes. Hebrew was revived as a spoken language in the mid-19th century and today is spoken by over 5 million in Israel.

      Comments about Hebrew Phases 1-3:

The packaging is vastly improved over that of 10 years ago. The recordings are uniformly of very high quality and the speakers are clean in their presentation. I can find nothing to critic.

      Comments about Hebrew I-III:

The main lessons are vintage Pimsleur- excellent.

      Service and delivery comments:

The font used for the reading materials is block print. OK, this is in use, but the cost of using a higher quality more regular square font can no longer be that great. Word has it, after all. This is just a matter of doing the work. Better to use the cursive if, for some reason, good quality square is impossible. And, while I understand the "we do not supply transcripts" theory it would help a lot of us who are not strictly learn by ear types.

      Comments about Hebrew I-III:

I'm on lesson 6 of Hebrew 1 so there's a long way to go. I listen to the CD while commuting. The material is definitely sinking in.

I love the repetition of prior lessons while advancing through new lessons, It really helps to reinforce the lessons learned. My goal is to be able to converse in Hebrew by the time I tour Israel next fall and I'm fully confident that this course will get me there.

The convenience of being able to listen to the recordings at any time is far easier than scheduling some online course that requires appointments to meet with teachers while sitting at a computer. Since this is an audio program, it's also quite convenient to be able to learn and practice while commuting rather than having to sit at a computer and look at pictures.

For anyone thinking of buying this program, I would recommend finding someone who already speaks the language or someone to take the course along with you so you can practice your new language skills outside of the recording.

      Some suggestions:
      1) reduce the time for each lesson from 30 minutes to around 20 to reduce fatigue; (maybe I'm just too old for the longer lesson times)
      2) allow a few more seconds to recall and speak the given phrase; (age again?)
      3) sometimes it's difficult to understand the phonetics of a new word; it would be helpful to have the announcer indicate how a word is pronounced by giving the English letter that is equivalent to the sound;
      4) introduce fewer new words per lesson. Too many new words in a lesson is the main reason for having to repeat the lessons.

As it is, I find myself repeating the lessons multiple times before feeling confident enough to move on to the next lesson. The Pimsleur guarantee promises a refund if novice-level proficiency is not achieved in 60 days but, because of the need to go through lessons multiple times, I'm starting to think that this will take more like 3-4 months. On the up side, a friend who knows I'm taking this course approached me the other day and, in Hebrew, asked if I wanted something to eat. Although I've only been working on the language for a week, I fully and easily understood the question.

I would not hesitate to buy the program again. I learned my first language by hearing it all the time. That seems like a great way to learn the next language.

        Comments about Hebrew Phases 1-3:

I speak several languages, some fluently, others barely. I've tried many different approaches - classroom, immersion, tony computer programs with pictures, and Pimsleur (Portuguese and now Hebrew). Pimsleur is by far the best. No distractions; only comprehension and speech. The amazing part is that it focuses on both of these *at speed* and enables comprehension of normal conversation. No other approach has done that, even immersion, so quickly and effectively. It also focuses on pronunciation, which is not only esthetically pleasing but essential to comprehension as well. The grammar part is functional, not didactic. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

          Comments about Hebrew Phases 1-3:

I use Pimsleur while doing other things such as long commutes, bike riding or on treadmill. The great part is that it keeps drilling you until you can solidly recall what they've covered. The downside so far are that some of the sounds are hard to hear and it would help to be able to see what it's supposed to sound like and sometimes they answer too quickly.
