Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet

Hebrew, a Semitic language, is the official language of Israel. It was once considered a dead language with no native speakers, although it remained in use for liturgical purposes. Hebrew was revived as a spoken language in the mid 19th century and today is spoken by over 5 million in Israel.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Hebrew I, Comprehensive includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Hebrew alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

I've just finished Phase I and am going to continue with Phase II. I have an mp3 version, and use it mostly while driving or walking my dog, so the time spent on it is minimal.

It's a wonderful program that appears to meet all the promises made in the marketin description. Of course, it remains to be seen whether the Hebrew knowledge acquired this way will work in actual situations. Also, I am a bit concerned about ways of expanding the acquired skills post-Pimsleur.

I have a degree (hardly ever used) in teaching foreign languages and knew about the Pimsleur method in theory. Now, having applied it myself, I have proof that it works quite well.

I am in unit 10 phase I. I like the repition of the words learned from the previous unit. What I do not like is the rapid speed in which the male speaker in the lesson speaks. I have to backup and listen 4 to 6 times, he keeps speaking so fast I do not understand sometimes I just go on. He could do this in the later courses but not the first. If he would have spoken slowly and distinctly I would have given the course a high rating. You cannot learn a language very well when the person speaking talks like a machine gun, and you cannot discern the words. If the male speaks that fast in the second phase, I may not buy the next phase.

Comments about Hebrew Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Used it to prepare for a trip to Israel and previously the Turkish version for a trip to Turkey.. As it is an audio program that stands alone without printed, written or video it is perfect for learning while driving. Typically driving is unused free time which can readily be put to use learning a language with the Pimsleur audio method. I have tried other programs which require audio and video methods and just cannot find the time to make much progress with them.

Comments about Hebrew Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I too like one of the other reviewers was feeling pretty awesome until I got to 16. I had to listen to it like 4 times. Lesson 17 isn't easing up either. I sure hope the rest of the lessons aren't like these otherwise it's going to take a lot longer than I thought. There are too many new words that come up. Lots of new expressions and ways to use them which we never practiced that they expect you to whip up. You hear them once then move on. It's tough and not easy. I figure I'm half way there to quit now but dang these last lessons are killing me.

Comments about Hebrew Phase 1, Units 1-30:

When I am home I use the product on my computer.

When I am away I don't need to miss my daily lesson because it is on my phone!! LOVE THIS!

There are times in the lesson that it is difficult to catch what they are saying, they go too fast and don't immediately repeat. Especially when words are run together.

Comments about Hebrew Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I go through the mp3 downloads on my laptop. I usually don't multitask with other work because I want to learn everything the first time. What I love about this program is that there is a good explanation of "this is feminine, and this is masculine" Also, the fact that the Hebrew words are broken down the first time they are said. And I can also sometimes tell a difference in pronunciation between the two speakers, so I know what ways they can correctly be pronounced. I appreciate the fact that the information I am learning are on subjects I want to know when starting to learn Hebrew (like saying "I dont understand Hebrew very well", "I'm American" and so on). The method does work because I am retaining words and phrases easily (and even thinking them throughout the day). However, it is more difficult to draw out the phrases in conversation, especially when the conversation is moving quickly. I feel like I am missing 1/2 of it while my brain is translating the other 1/2.

    Service and delivery comments:

To improve this product, some more listening tasks should be put in. Hearing one phrase is easy to understand, but that same phrase is hard to pull out from a conversation. Maybe speak the conversation slowly in the beginning, then repeat it again at normal speed the second time (so you would have translated it the first time, and then hear how it sounds in everyday conversation the second time). Anymore listening exercises would be beneficial, I have even considered just finding some conversations on the internet to listen to so I can get comfortable with it.

Comments about Hebrew Phase 1, Units 1-30:

It's a great way to learn a language which is so much different than English. Learning to read from right to left is a challenge but the course gives constant reinforcement in both oral and reading skills. I plan to continue advanced courses in Hebrew once I have mastered Phase I.
