Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet

Haitian Creole is one of the official languages of Haiti, along with French. It is a French-based creole heavily influenced by West African languages. Pimsleur's Haitian Creole teaches the standard dialect spoken in and around the central district and the capital, Port-au-Prince.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Haitian Creole Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Unit 11 and provide you with an introduction to reading Haitian Creole. These lessons are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. In addition, combined Reading Lessons from all the units are included at the end. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format..

I purchased this program for myself and our daughters, age 10 and 12, for a school subject. We have used it for two months. We will be adopting two children from Haiti, and hope that this helps us communicate more easily with them. I find that the speed and sound of the speakers in the program are very much like what I experienced in Port au Prince.
Pros-
The sound is a quality recording, and directions are clear. Because lessons are not overly long, they are not overwhelming. I love that there are two speakers to hear two slightly differnt ways things are pronounced. And male and female voices add to that distinction. The fact that they are speaking at a normal speed is so helpful. We find the lessons humorous and not overly demanding, with time to predict a response and correct ourselves once or twice after the correct response is given.

Cons-
We cannot always agree on what the speakers are saying. Is the speaker using a 'm' or 'n' sound? Is there an additional consonant sound in that word? Although that is accurate to 'real life' listening, it does not help us reproduce an accurate sound in response. For those who learn visually, you need to wait for lesson 11 for any written words. I think that I am having more of a problem with that than my daughters- young brains have the advantage here. But I would love to have a transcript or at least a basic vocabulary list.

The program is very clear with lots of repetition. It is a little too slow for me but I have had 8 years of French. Also there needs to be written text so you can see what you are saying. I have no clue why this isn't sa part of the program as pedagogically it makes total sense. Wish there were more lessons.

Comments about Haitian Creole Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I have been volunteering for a children's arts education program in Jacmel, Haiti and my time spent in Haiti is going to continue to increase. Learning the language for me was the most scary part of all of it. I have never been able to learn a language, failed in high school, failed in college. The prospect of learning Creole was overwhelming. This program is INCREDIBLE. I listen to the lessons on the way to and from work every day, out an hour a day. I am amazed at how much I have learned, about how much I have remembered!! I can talk to the kids in our program in Haiti enough to get by and I am confident that going forward and the more I listen and practice. It's was a total confidence booster that on my last trip to Haiti I got off the plane and was able to get around and have at least basic conversations with my driver who spoke no English. I plan on moving to Haiti for six months come January and I am totally confident that I will have mastered a great foundation for my time there!

The only criticism I have is that sometimes what the speaker is saying is not clear and it is so important to have everything they say, when they say it the first time be clear and slow because otherwise it's hard to grasp things going forward when you miss part of something new.

Comments about Haitian Creole Phase 1, Units 1-30:

This product helped me start the difficult process of learning Haitian Creole. It is systematic and helps progress to move along at a steady rate. My only complaint is that there is only one set for Haitian Creole! I want more!
