Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet

Greek is the official language of Greece and one of the official languages of Cyprus. Many modern scientific and technical words in English are derived from Greek, and it has been estimated that 12% of the English vocabulary is of Greek origin. This course teaches Modern Greek.

Can learning another language be as easy as speaking your own? Yes - with Pimsleur it’s that easy. Learn on your own time, at your own pace, and wherever you choose. Greek Phase 2 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one additional hour of reading instruction, and is designed to be used after completing Phase 1.

  • In the first 10 lessons of Phase 2, you begin to use the past tense. Structures become more complex and informal speech is introduced. Conversations become fuller, and learners are able to discuss business and social activities, manage shopping situations, and express their interests. As you progress, vocabulary is expanded and fluency increases.
  • The next 10 lessons of Phase 2 allow you to further combine and build upon known elements, and produce longer and more complex sentences. You learn to bargain with shopkeepers, deal with business situation, get and give medical information, and discuss the weather.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 2, you’ve doubled your vocabulary and have several hundred structures to draw upon. You’ll gain experience asking for assistance, finding a location that is some distance away, and using relative structures – faster, slower, etc. Sports and leisure activities are explored, as well as shopping, changing money, and future travel plans. By the end of Phase 2, you’re speaking at a mid-intermediate level with near-native pronunciation, and you are comfortable meeting most social demands and limited job requirements.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to give you practice reading Greek, and to provide you with some insight into Greek culture with proverbs, common expressions, and a broad look at things you’ll see when visiting Greece. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Greek (Modern) II, Comprehensive:

I'm a student of many languages and a teacher of a few, and I found this method quite effective. I can now understand quite a bit, and communicate at a basic conversational level, at least in some areas. I just wish there were more advanced levels available! Please consider adding Greek 3 and beyond.

Comments about Greek (Modern) Phase 2, Units 1-30:

Very well paced. Good ammount of new vocabulary in every lesson and enough repetition.
Even if cut into small pieces it is not a typical tourist two phrases program. You will need o follow through the entire course as you learn "from the bottom up". I liked the reading exercises I used them to get familiar with writing too (I would have loved more of that). In few cases I would have appreciated just a little bit of background information (on grammar): Example (Greek): "you want to buy s.th." Greek: "you want to you buy s.th." (A greek told me that there is no infinite version as in "to go", "to drink" etc.) I found that a little confusing but learned it pretty fast anyway. Over all, I find, it's a very good system. For the quality of the course I would be giving it a 5 star rating, but I find it a little "pricy". On the other hand this is NOT wasted money - I haven't found anything close to this for easiness and learning success.

    Service and delivery comments:

I downloaded three courses so far and never had any problem.
(unfortunately there's no CD or DVD sale in Europe, that's a pit, I would have preferred)

Comments about Greek (Modern) Phase 2, Units 1-30:

I have been a fan of Pimsleur for years since I first learned Spanish (which I speak with almost fluency). My boyfriend is Cypriot and I wanted to learn to speak to him in his native language. I found the resources available frustrating and as he learned English as a child, he was of little help to teach me. Completing Greek I & II with Pemsleur has allowed me to be conversive with him. The method really works. I do not consider myself an audial learner and a very bad language learner but with the secret of Pimsleur and some persistence my friends are constantly amazed. You will need perseverence (especially if Greek is your first language) but Pimsleur will leave you with the ability to say things more quickly and with less accent than if you just learned a bunch of grammer rules. Since completing the course I have expanded to learn more verbs and nouns on my own. Although the course has only a smallset of reading portions, I am able to recall a word that has the same letters which has left my boyfriend impressed with my pronunciation skills. His friends are also impressed how often I understand what they are talking about since the course teaches you many common matters at near native speed. I couldn't be happier with the course.

Comments about Greek (Modern) Phase 2, Units 1-30:

I tried several conversational Greek books and audio programs before finding Pimsleur's Modern Greek 1 and 2. Was concerned because though I used to learn languages well, now that I'm in my 70's I was finding it difficult and frustrating. The Pimsleur lessons solved that issue. The lessons are scientifically designed to repeat vocabulary at just the right intervals so you retain it. They help you pronounce the words correctly, and the speed gradually increases so by the end you can understand native speakers talking naturally. The content is what you need for visiting Greece and connecting with real people there, not just salespeople. And the subtle humor of some of the dialogues you get to participate in, keeps the half-hour lessons light and fun. Thank you Pimsleur! I leave for Greece in a week and am feeling so much more confident now, really prepared for many situations.

Comments about Greek (Modern) II, Comprehensive:

I am learning Greek for my own knowledge and pleasure. Not only does it help maintain my mental faculties at my plus side middle age, but its fun, too. I am gaining confidence not only in speaking the language, but understanding what a native speaker would be saying, albeit with a need for slower pronunciation. I couldn't recommend the Pimsleur process any higher.
